It's bad when an entity like the USPS can't seem to get their thit together. Yeah some of us have had more problems than others. Not going into any details but I think I'm done using the postal system and I DO NOT use UPS for anything. Guess if I can't buy it locally or within a reasonable driving distance I just won't buy or trade. And this is my first time having any problems with them. Well there's always a first time...

Yeah I got a bow back in February of this year and our carrier threw it on the hood of one of our cars. Another time he left a box on the porch. It was raining of course. But this time it's an out - of - state post office causing the problem.

But we have had a kid going around stealing packages off of porches...following the UPS guy around. I spotted him one day but he wasn't caught. Hasn't done it in a while now that his description ran on the news :)

I bought a track of timber a few weeks ago. Got all the legalities done and hired a logger to cut it. The day he was moving in, I was marking the lines for harvest when my hip chain broke. Yikes!!!!!!
It was a big deal as the unfinished section was where he needed to start. I came home immediately and ordered one. I picked the 2 day shipping as I NEEDED it like at no other time. 6 men and their families needed to cut, not twiddle their thumbs.
I placed the order on the 6th of October by 11:30 AM. I called the next day to ensure the company had indeed dropped it in the mail. They had. I received it the 14th. No matter who I called, the fuss I raised, the guarantee to be two day, I just received the same old nonchalant service and assurance they were doing their best. It gets really old after so many bad experiences. If there is an alternative on shipping, I always pick it. It has been so bad and so repetitive, I'm simply out of words to describe it.
Civility has been long gone concerning the USPS for quite a few years now. It is the norm here, not the exception. And it can't be only me who experiences it. I once mailed a package 3 (THREE) times before it actually went to the intended address and not back to my house. It was in a flat rate box no doubt. When entering the Post Office for the third time to drop it off, I got the same old, "HUM, I wander what is wrong here?", from the same clerk. When speaking with the Post Master about monetary retribution for time and gas due to their incompetence, same old, "I can't help you there.".
It most definitely must be regional. And this one must be the habitual worst of the worst. It is just worn out that nobody is held accountable for these actions or lack of performance. They are quickly turning into yet another incompetent government agency, fleet wide. God Bless

Our post here isn't very reliable either so I go down to another town where the post seems to be MUCH better. My papa was a post master years ago, even he doesn't trust the post any more. Just shows how this old country is turning. Good Luck -Bones

I have had quite a few bows shipped to me and have shipped out a few too. My local PO has friendly, helpful staff.
Best advice I know to tell anyone is to overpack a bow. Pack it like it will be thrown off the house and thrown from a moving vehicle. I have gotten packages that were impressively packaged and some I would have been worried about with me taking to the post office.
As for ship times, that two or three day business is just an estimate. They closed our nearest sort facility so now our mail goes through Memphis. Memphis is a hole. Mail gets stuck there, sometimes for days without reason. You can see the tracking info and it just sits. Have seen it go from Memphis PO to another then back to the first one before coming this way.
I asked the local postmaster why my bows get delayed. He said that if the container didn't have room the package just gets left until maybe the next day or the next. No guarantee remember. He did say it helps to bump up the priority level such as priority generally moves faster than standard post.
With that said, I will also say I have had packages make it here and to others at surprising speed.

USPS works for me. Not the fastest or the smartest but I usually get my mail and packages on time. Not everything works 100%-100% of the time. I've given up on UPS. They can't seem to deliver a package undamaged and some of their deliveries look like they've been tampered with. I complained once and was put on hold. I'm still waiting. Frank

These whiner threads crack me up.
Find someone else who will pick up a piece of paper on the west coast and take it to the east coast for $0.49..give me a break!
I've dealt with all of them twice weekly with my job and in 25+ years I can count on one maybe two hands how many times they messed something up.
Then take into account how many 10's of thousands of packages they deal with daily...If you ask me they have an outstanding record of doing it right.

I have used other carriers with dismal results. For many, many items including bamboo fly rods, classic reels and a number of bows, I have used USPS Priority Mail/Insured. Had one bow damaged and the insurance claim was a pain in the butt but I did receive full compensation. I will stay with USPS.

Greenmtn, I do the same as you with longbows that are vintage and pricey. I have had my fair share of usps woes as some may remember. Shipping from VT unless going to anywhere in New England is pricey. I see one post about a bow sitting in NJ. I had one sit there for 10 days before moving along to Washington state. Most times it goes over to Nashua, NH before anywhere. Recently had a Grumley bow that was insured for $1600 scare me. I packed in heavy schedule 4 pvc and put in a box to not roll off any belts. Went all the way out to MO before backtracking to IL. Took 7 days on a priority ship. Moral of the story is I hold my breath and pray every time I ship with USPS now. They fought with me on insurance 2 years ago when they broke a Grumley. Very Scary The seller didn't offer to make it right and fight himself. I basicly got a "good luck". This was a trade. Always have some proof of value. Trades make that hard without appraisal. Thank you again Big Jim ;-)

I have shipped literally thousands of packages by USPS, UPS, Fedex and DHL. The thing that drives me nuts with USPS is the dumb government rules/policies, and their tracking SUCKS.
USPS is starting to deliver packages for UPS and for Amazon and you can count it taking at least 2 extra days, and the second the package falls into their hands the tracking info will be incorrect/late or both.
Thankfully we now have a self service shipping at our Post Office. As long as the packages are small enough, I can skip the frustration of it taking 10 times longer when the Postal worker does it.
(I'm not bitter) :)

It doesn't matter who they are.
USPS: Almost daily, we receive business mail which is addressed to a firm in another city, another zip code. Not sure where the mailman thinks 'Suite 906' might be located in a residential home. Fedex: Last year Fedex delivered a box to my front porch. I was waiting for him and reached out to take the package off his hands....he looked at me, dropped it onto the concrete, then turned around and walked off.
UPS: Came home to find a note on the door saying the package was delivered to my back patio. He had thrown it over the 6' fence onto the concrete.
Amazon delivered a flatscreen to my house. The private carrier driver was so old that I had to get it out of his truck for him. Heck, I was 60 then...he was much older!

I guess I have a really good local Post Office. I ship packages by Priority mail almost every day. They often get to California, and other far away states from Illinois in 2 days. I haven't had a single bow out of thousands, damaged by USPS, and I ship them in plain cardboard boxes. I always insure the packages, and ship online. Shipping online lets you know if the address is valid for their system. It won't take an address that is not in the system, and that means there won't be a problem with delivery.
I don't recommend you use Express mail any longer, however. It won't get there any quicker than Priority, and costs over 2x's as much.

I shipped a longbow to Iowa once and the post office deliverd it to a fishing store in the wrong town. I was lucky because the post office was in a small town and they remembered the two fedex triangle tubes taped together. They said they thought they were fishing poles so they took them there because they deliver a lot of poles to that store. They didn't even look at the address. That's the only issue I have had but it only takes one to leave a bad taste.

I have had no problems with UPS or the USPS. I once had a UPS driver carry a very large 40# box with a heavy duty bag target about 200 yds in 90+ degree heat. A wind storm the day before toppled trees on our road and he could not travel it to get to our house. So, he came a different route to get above us and then walked down to my house to deliver on the scheduled day. He then had to walk up the hill to return to the truck. That was definitely above and beyond any expectation I ever had about a delivery.

USPS gets it to me, but the 2 day priority is a joke. Their tracking application is the worst I've seen. I've had two day priority take 5 business days. Their tracking is not always updated and I've had packages show a status of delivered when it is still sitting at the post office. That's a good scare when you are waiting for a new bow. I suspect they scan the package as delivered so their metrics look better. Now after my complaining I have to say my regular postal lady is great. She helps me sneak my new bows in when they arrive.

Ummm SB/ Steve do you remember our joke about Vermont shipping? Anyway I have a bow going to Canada today and one that Is going to Illinois. I could only insure the one to Illinois for $5000 which is the max. Packed that one in bubble wrap, in a pvc pipe with end caps, put in a 5x5 box to not allow it to roll. Crossing my fingers and holding my breath. This is the most expensive Piece I have ever shipped. I am a bit worried even though I packed it for nuclear war A.K.A the post office.

I make it a habit to give them a Christmas card and I even gave two of them digt certificates to a local restraunt. They don't forget and take pretty good car eof me. Course I live in a small town as well. UPS changes drivers too often but I only had one problem where it was never delivered to my house - luckily Amazon shipped out a replacement once I did the proper paperwork.

USPS managed to "lose" the most expensive bow I ever sold, and when you try to talk to someone--anyone at all-- with your complaints, it's more frustrating than you can imagine. Nothing but robots, recordings, endless loops, and not one scrap of accountability for anyone in the organization.
I understand that they move a high percentage of their packages quickly and correctly... and occasionally their tracking even works. BUT-- that's no excuse for having such terrible customer service when something DOES go wrong. Likewise, I don't really care how they compare to UPS or FedEx-- their customer service is still terrible AT THE CORPORATE LEVEL. Yes, there are some great folks behind the counter at my local P.O., but everyone over their head is just about useless.

Complaints, complaints, complaints... People love to complain Don't get me wrong I complain too. I've been retired from the U.S.P.S since '96 And believe me it's middle management that's the problem all they see are numbers. I suppose they blame upper management. But it's the workers, the carriers and clerks that get s--t on by the public. The mail person on the street does the best he/she can. It's a matter of P-R-I-D-E. for us. Sure mistakes can and will be made after all we are not robots and that is IMO the gist of the problem. To expect machine like performance for people in any job is wishing for "pie-in-the-sky." When I was working we cased and carried our own mail, when I was weeks away from retirement the P.O. went to "machine casing" which turned out to be a B-I-G faux pas. Of course the computer inroads haven't helped any. just my two pennies
