After four seasons of terrible luck (target panic, no shot opportunities, no deer) I finally closed the deal on some deer. I got two does Saturday evening. One was a dry doe and the other had a big fawn with her that was almost as big as she was. I shot the dry doe at 6:11 and then the other one at 6:20. Both deer were standing almost the exact same spot.

Both were about 12 yard shots. I hit the first one far back and high. When she ran off I saw a large spot of blood on her side. I could barely see her through the brush and I thought I saw her go down but didn't hear a crash so I wasn't sure. While giving her some time, the second doe came in with the big fawn. I took my time and calmly made a perfect double lung shot on her. I tracked her 150 yards on a good blood trail. By the time I got her dressed and back to the truck it was dark and I went after the first deer I shot. At first I had trouble finding blood but once I did it was a short 50 yard trail to the deer. She had dropped where I saw her last. Turned out the spot she dropped was bare ground leaves which is why I didn't hear her crash. She must have turn at he shot because she was broadside when I shot but the arrow cut the artery under the spine and angled through the hindquarter and cut the femoral artery as well. I used my 62" 54#@30.5" Timberhawk Premier, older Carbon Express Terminator Hunter shaft, and 125 grain Stinger 4 blade broadhead.

This is my first double and after a four season drought it felt good to finally get some venison again.

Absolutely wild! Nice shooting. Congratulations. Did you cut the tenderloins? The first deer I shot with a bow was a doe standing on the railroad tracks and I was in the ditch about 10 ft lower. The arrow went up through the rib cage and then back under the spine and cut the dorsal aorta. Also sliced through the tenderloins. The big doe only went 20 yds and I had to drag her about a mile back to my car. I thought I was really great. When I got home and dad I hung it up my dad says, "What did you shoot her through the tenderloins for?". Like I shouldn't have done that. He was laughing too! Skeet

Thanks everyone.

Skeets - I think I cut the tenderloin. Funny part is that my stand is 18 feet in a tree on the downside on a ravine. And the deer were traveling on the side of the ravine which put them at almost eye level to me. The arrow should have come out the other side not angle through the hindquarter.

A four year slump is nothing. I went 15 years on deer some years back. Getting a double is a great way to break that slump. Now get to work butchering them!

Thanks guys.

Keith - Fifteen years! That is a drought and a half!

HignNTree - I'll tell you, I was really starting to get down. I always enjoy my time in the woods, even when I don't get a deer or an opportunity at a deer. But I am out there hunting and would like to be successful from time to time. It took me 3 seasons to get my first deer with a recurve, but after that I was averaging 1-3 deer a season. Then nothing for 4 seasons. My mother and non-hunting friends started joking that I lost my touch. I guess it just runs in cycles for some people.

Congratulations on two nice deer!.. My grandpa used to say: every now and then even a blind hawg finds and acorn..:)

You did better than that with your persistence and good shooting.. IF you were here in the west..I'd hunt with you anytime!..Jim

From: woodshavins

Man! Keep takin two at a time and you'll quickly make up for those dry years;-) Had my first double last year too. Lot of butchering to do when that happens. Happy work, I call it!

From: dire wolf
Date: 20-Oct-14

AND, I wouldn't call the dry years a 'slump'..? That's more for a baseball batter who batted 450 last year..and can't get a hit this year..

Just didn't get the arrowing ops in those years..Wasn't like you weren't out and ready..:) Jim

Your experience with the first shot just shows how much deer can move at the shot. They do crazy things sometimes. Glad you got them both. That is an awesome accomplishment.

Congratulations and great job. It's a lot of work after the shot but when it is all done the smile is twice as big!

From: Steve Milbocker

That's the way to do it Marv! Congrats! I'm thinking about turning the power line into a food plot. It ought to really be good back there then!

From: Ronin
Date: 22-Oct-14

Steve - I think it would be a great improvement. I think the guys that own the land on southwest part of that bottom are doing some heavy baiting. I don't see many deer on the state land and when I do they seem to be in a hurry to head that direction. I just happen to get lucky and be a the right place at the right time. A food plot might level the playing field some.
