I've been kicking around the idea of getting either a new model Super Kodiak or a new model 59' Kodiak. I know, "try both first", but I am leaning towards the 59' and these threads are usually about how much people like a certain bow. I'd like to know if there are any things that you don't like about the 59', for example noise, vibration, finish, feel. I'm leaning more to the 59' over the SK because I like the lower grip on the 59'. Any comments or opinions would be appreciated.

Do a search, there's been a lot of threads on the subject in the past year or so.

Bear didn't leave anything on the table with the 59. It's all there. From my little experience with them, and the reviews I've read of them, I'm sure you'd be pleased with it.
I think the only negative issue I've heard of is the leather grip.

Not so on the leather grip maybe only a few mine was incredable but I sold it because of two many bows.Bear really came up with a beauty with the 59er. The Super k is just out and don't think a lot is maybe known yet. Big Jim has them he just called me.
Put a skinny string on it though with the padded loops you will be glad you had. It really shoots then and is quieter I found on my 59er.
Good Luck

The '59, whether new or original, is one of my top 2. The only real thing I can see as an issue is it's low mass weight, for those who like heftier bows. Otherwise, IMHO, the '59 is about as close to perfect as a hunting recurve can be. If you are a hunter, I would strongly suggest the satin finish option.

great bows, but they drop the ball on the string. that is the only negative, well the grip has a few complaints but I could live with it. I would take it over the SK for sure.

I love the bow, but hated the grip. I took it off, removed glue reside and now it's perfect.

Frank theres a way around that price tag I found it myself. I bought a new 59er 100.00 less than the price off the classifieds. A feller wanted to sell his for whatever reason brand new in the box and I snagged it. You have to watch whats around these do come up. I sold it to a bow shop for what I bought it for and he sold it for a profit when they weren't available.
Deals do come up now and then so whoever wants one keep an eye out. I buy a good deal of stuff and sell resonable when I am done with it. I got to shoot mine and see what it was about then sold it for what I paid thats not all bad for less the cost. The new SK same thing they will be around at some time as they come out into the market.

I've been more pleased with my 2013 '59 Kodiak than with the four custom bows I have owned (including some big name bows). It is an exceptional bow.

Strings with factory bows have always been off the shelf. That is why there are custom string makers to sate the bow buyers. Someone wouldn't like whatever they gave you, so buy a good quality string. Bear normally sent 16 strand dacron with even 45 pound bows back in the 60's. The first thing I did was make my own 12 strand back then.
Anyway, the 59 is a great bow but is a different hoss than the S.K. Both are great in their own right so I wouldn't make a recommendation of one over the other. I like the geometry of the Super Kodiak more, but I wouldn't turn down a 59 either...they are gorgeous and shoot well.

I have a new production 59er and the grip leather is crap! It is starting to peel some of the top layer of leather--sort of like blistering and peeling--and is wrapped the wrong direction. My fingers are always rubbing against the overlay the wrong way. Neal Byce told me that was the way Fred did it....if so Fred should have done it the other direction, :o) The string is so-so. But like all the strings Bear puts on their bows it does not taper out at the loops but at the end of the strands it just suddenly goes to half the diameter of the loop bundles. I think that contributes to increased noise on the shot. It seems to me that with the cost of that bow they could go a bit further and put a properly made string on it and better quality leather that is skived down where it overlaps. You should not have to expect to replace grip leather and string on a $700 bow. That being said, I really do like the way it shoots.

I looked at a couple 59's at Cabelas, one regular one bargain cave. Nice looking/feeling bows, but even the bargain cave model was as much as a really good custom. If I was going to buy one I would probably hold out for a maple sight window but I'm not a big fan of purple heart so you have to expect that.

Thanks for the heads up George. Rooty, I already saw your '59 Bear beauty bow. I saw how good it looked with the Purpleheart I Beam fully exposed. I know you did that on purpose, but i's all good. My problem will be when I finally get one, I'll want to see that I beam, but at the same time, I find the contrast of the deerskin wrapped grip around that exotic wood grip enchanting. It will be my problem and I look forward to the inner conflict. Don't mind me, I'm just envious.

I picked up my 2014 Kodiak on ebay for $459,guy still had original shipping box and invoice.Looked like it was hardly shot and just a couple of months old.The factory string is overbuilt,a 16 strand D97 and the loop ends were way too large.I twsted up a padded loop 8 strand Ultra Cam for mine and made the loop ends smaller.I like the looks and profile and it is a great shooting bow in my opinion!

Are they close to the stated weight on the bow? Some bow manufacturers have bows that are sometimes 5 lbs. over the stated weight.

My 59er is marked 50@28 but actually is 47@28. I knew that when I bought it--was looking for 45#er and this one feels so good at this weight.

Most have seen this already. Love the bow and I can't really think of anything negative about it. I am not really having the problems with the leather on the grip that others seem to be. The thing is, every bow will feel different and perform differently in their own hands. This is a very "light" elegant bow to shoot. It really gives me a nice "feel for the shot" if you understand what I mean. I really should shoot it more.

I'd like as close to 45# as possible. I'm just very comfortable at that weight. It's not that I couldn't shoot something a few pounds heavier or a bit lighter, it's just that I really like 45#. I wish Bear would just mark them what they actually weigh and not round it out.

Here is a phot of it with my new Takedown. the 59' is rated at 55lbs @ 28" and the Takedown is rated at 57lbs at 28". With my 29 1/2" draw I am really pulling around 60lbs with both. I am shooting Easton 2216's out of both, except for my wing shooting which I use flu-flued 5575 Gold Tips.
Oh and the Takedown is an A handle with #1 limbs making it 56".
Cheers Jeff
