hello all. I'm currently working down the cambiium on a yew stave and I've violated a few growth rings and cut the odd small knot by accident.
I am planning on using a rawhide backing.
Will the rawhide be suffice to stop splitters lifting and the bow failing?
Also when rawhide backing, so I have to ensure all the cambium is removed and the back completely pristine?
Thank you in advance :)

Yes, That is what the rawhide is for. You want just the sap wood before you back it. The sapwood rings would be tough not to violate.

Juan, Much depends on the length, width and hoped for draw weight & draw length you are dealing with. The bark & cambium layer comes off yew staves..They are very thin..THEN you get to the light colored sapwood..which need be cleaned up carefully doing your best not to violate the thin growth rings..
The clarified calfskin, goatskin, deer skin should be semi opaque and thin-uniform..Like the drum head of a good drum..It's goes on when the bow is about 90% tillered in.. Is allowed to dry and then trimmed with a flat file to the limb edges..and then sealed with whatever vinish you finally use for the bow..
"RAWHIDE" backing protect the back from occasionaly dints and dings..but doesn't add anything to the bow for strength nor will it save a poor stave from breaking if the wood or the craftsmaship were NOT adequate for the bow to be made..
A sinew back on the other hand..will add strength as well as durability to a wooden bow..but that's a whole 'nuther challenging adventure..:) Jim

I've seen where the sinew was pulled apart and then glued on. I am wondering if I can use the thin layer of sinew from the back straps? And just glue it on in the thin layer that it is

I'm going to put the rawhide on before tillering the bow. I love in a very dry climate, so rawhide backing is advised.
The main reason I am doing it because of the very dry climate in which I live.
