Although I clean my files and rasps with a brass brush after each use I've never chalked them. I've seen it done with metal files especially working with copper and aluminum. Does this process help any with wood files and rasps?

On wood, I wouldn't think there would be any advantage to chalking your rasp. I use a file card and clean the wood out easily.

Not anymore. I used to, but never saw that it made much difference with wood rasps. I thought chalk was mostly to keep files from loading up with the softer metals? I just clean my rasps with a brass brush and hang them behind the bench.
I do try to take good care of the rasps, files, scrapers, planes and such though, never letting steel touch steel... ever.
I've learned that when the 'new guys' come over during a Bownanza... it behooves me sometimes to put my best tools out of sight because they don't all share my respect for them... even if it's impressed upon them from the get-go. Invariably, I'll approach the bench to find them all piled up next to the vise like pikie sticks. YIKES! Them Nicholson 49's and 50's ain't cheap. GIMME that! :^)

I haven't had many instances that enough attention to cleaning afterwards wouldn't get the crud out with the exception when rasp working wood, especially osage, that is too moist. I was just wondering if anyone noticed that chalk would help keep the rasp from loading up so fast.

Jeff, I know what you're saying. My boys are great because they grew up alongside but some just don't have a clue. I grew up under a father who hung all hand tools, that weren't locked up, on a pegboard over the workbench with the outline drawn around them with a black marker. The minute he pulled into the garage after work he knew if anything was missing. We learned quick. My mom was usually the culprit, all of the kids knew better. lol

I don't chalk my files or rasp, wait a minute I bearly use them. I use my 6" and angle grinder, then my DA sander. So I don't count. Jeff F

Not rasps. Sometimes chalk files. You could eat up a LOT of chalk by chalking a rasp.

I use my "used up" shoeing rasps for wood...and yes, they're pretty course to chalk.
