I've been using the shorter Simmons interceptors for several years never had a problem sharpening them. They took a little longer then I like but I was able to get a satisfactory edge on them. Made the switch to the longer safari this year and for the life of me I cannot get them razor sharp. I've tried the jewel stick, paper wheel, file. Steel Master, and Rada and none of them get these heads razor sharp.

In the past I was always able to get a razor edge on Zwickey, Magnus, Bear and a host of other broadheads with nothing but a mill file and leather strop. I can get a razor edge in minutes on my knives with a paper wheel.

I like these heads and don’t want to make a change as I have been shooting them all year ……but I am spending far too much time trying to get a razor edge on them and spending way too much money buying sharpening systems for something that used to take me about 5 minutes per head to do.

Season opens in 4 days and I don't even have one razor sharp head. Taking them to a professional knife sharpener tonight to see if he can get a razor edge on these. I am beginning to think it is the steel? I am going to try to get a hold of Dave again this morning to see what he thinks. I’ve tried the methods he suggested in our last conversation but have not had any luck.

Anyone else having trouble with the Safrai heads?

I really like the Simmons broadheads and nothing would make me happier then to come upon a method to sharpen them that works for me.

You shouldnt be having any issues Accusharp or RADA wheelie should get you 95% there. do not use too much pressure. Lighten up at they end.

Strope on leather or even cardboard.

I sharpened a knife last night and it was sharp ,but after stropping on leather and cardboard I could shave with it.

Im convinced that he lat 10% of sharpening (rods/stropping) are the most important.

Got the razors edge and jewel stick - nada. I also use light pressure with Rada - nada. Like I said above, I have sharpened broadheads for over 30 years and have never had this problem. I like the blood trails simmons leaves however, I am not going to spend an enormous amount of time and money on special equipment when A file and leather strop has always worked for me before. Sharpening a boradhead should not be so difficult or take special equipment.

Kinda obvious isn't it? You know how to sharpen heads, and have sharpened the Interceptor to a shaving edge, right? So it has to be the steel hardness or the edge angle on the Safari. Work it out with the manufacturer, change the edge angle, or go back to the Interceptors.

Having the same problem as we speak. Running all over town right now looking for something to get the job done. This is a real challenge and not as easy as some of you think. Never seen nothing like it..

I use a Dremel with a sanding barrel first to remove the factory grind, then a sharpening steel, then a diamond rod, finally finish up with a ceramic rod. I'm gonna say it's the steel, not you. I love and shoot both the Interseptors and Safari, I won't go back to any other 2 blade. With the above mentioned method I can get them razor sharp, hair popping sharp, my hairless forearm and legs are proof.

Just got off the phoine with Dave - nicer guy you won't find. He is going to send me 6 sharpened ones (I bought them and he is going to hone them) and gave me some tips to try with the steel master.... so I'll give them another shot. Like I said, I really like this broadhead - just need to get them razor sharp.

Yes , he is a nice guy!

Guys, you are making this much harder than it is. All you need is a coarse half round file, fine dial stick and the top of your vehicle window. Pm me I'd be glad to help.

would like to see it to believe it...love these broadheads but they are spoons..

i use a flat file to change the bevel, then a sharpening steel to fine tune,, I can make them cut hair with the file,, ,changing the bevel and a light stroke is the key,, I hold the head by the tip to hit on the steel,,so the wings are sharp,,

I tried the car window at lunch. Used a RADA, got it as sharp as I could, tried the car window for 30 minutes.... results: Cuts a few hairs but not much. Grabbed my file and a magnus that I hadn't used in over 10 years, 5 minutes later, after a 50 or so files strokes and some stropping.... shaving hairs rather easily.

I am sorry but there is something going on here. It could very well be me but like I said before I have never struggled this much with getting broadheads razor sharp. And there ain't no way anyone is getting these razor sharp using just a RADA wheelie - I'll have to see that in person to ever believe that. You might get them semi sharp with RADA but there ain't no way they are razor sharp off this thing.

I will wait to see how sharp the one's Dave is sending me.... and then see if somehow I can mimmic those results.... but for now it looks like I am going to be in the market for a new BH for next year. I have spent well over 10 hours trying to get this one BH to shave... I have better things to do.

Deer season starts tomorrow and all have for a video camera is my i-pad. Ill try to put something together when I have time. Out of the package I can have them shaving in minutes and if they have been shot into dirt a few times 10. Minutes Max. Don't get rid of them, when sharp they are brutal!

Don't care what kind of steel it is...if you can 't get it razor sharp it 's a waste of time.

I don't have any pics of it but I rigged up a ceramic rod to use on my KME. I had a hard time getting my Simmons sharp till I did that. Now I can get them very sharp.

Update: OK Sunday morning I sat down with a pot of coffee, steel master, Jewel diamond stick and determination. I used the steel master file and really ground down the bevel and got a good burr. Then I used the jewel stick and broadhead guide and got a pretty decent edge. Finished up with the ceramic sticks on the Simmons steelmaster and now they cut hair. Still not as sharp as I usually prefer them but there is no doubt they will kill deer.

I appreciate all the tips.

What I found was that The RADA, Accusharp, and other pull through type sharpeners are nice but there is no way they will ever produce the scalpel type edge I prefer. IMHO - They are adequate for field touch ups.

Frustrating to say the least but perhaps now I will be able to maintain them?

I`ve used simmons heads off and on for 20 years. They are not harder to sharpen for me just different. I use an accu-sharp or rada wheel. I get a bur on one side which is the same thing you would do with a file or whatever else then I remove the bur with lite pressure with a steel. No it won`t do for a heart transplant but it will kill a deer graveyard dead. I could probably show you near a 100 deer and pig pics I`ve killed using this method. We make things really hard, Indians killed them with rocks.RC

I just started using them this year. Using a razors edge and a jewel stick I had mine razor sharp in no time. I just made sure to work a good ribbon before moving on to finer grit.

Anybody tried the work sharp?

I did not read thru the other posts but...a round chainsaw file might do the trick.
