Got this one last night with 63#s @ 27" predator recurve. Using 755 grain arrow. The shot was 20 yards quartering away. Arrow entered second to the last rib and just poked through front leg. Broadhead was 190 grain meathead with 100 grain insert .

Sir that one, is rather large. :-) I hunt in Anderson County some, last year we had a big population of pigs all through the summer and into the fall, this year... Well I'm not complaining really, but they have disappeared. Any thoughts? There is a rumor surfing around that Texas Parks and Wildlife may have done some eradication programs (which I do support), but no one really knows for sure.

Thanks guys, these big ones are hard to kill. Lost one about two weeks ago using 53#s @27"s with a 630 grain arrow. Made a good shot and only got one lung, trailed him for three hours in 107 degree temp. I was really scratching my head. Figured the solution was to increase penetration. You don't need it for most animals but big boars... Yes!

Thanks Sapcut, there is a larger set of tracks in the area. I'm holding off to hunt this one until I get my Bob Lee , should be about a month. Only drawing 27"s I'm going to 70+ pounds to get the penetration guys get with 60#s drawing 29"s.

There is some good public hunting, especially for hogs and waterfowl. I don't own land but have family and friends who do. If your just decent friends with someone they will let you kill hogs on there land. They have to trust you enough that you won't kill something that you shouldn't. As you know, no one is going to here you shoot!

I'll be 100% honest. I can shot 45#s more accurately than 63 but I can hit the kill with 63. You will kill some big boars with 45 but not consistently. Now, let's see how well I can shoot 70#s. If I had a 29" + draw like some of you lucky people, 60# would be plenty.

Great pig there. 63 # ain't heavy really 70# + into the 100 # + range is heavy. You got to see what an English yew war bow can do. These 100# to 180# monsters throw out 1000 + gns of arrow . 63# is very respectable weight none the less and your set up could not be faulted in anyway. Any of those 300 fps compounds ,shooting light weight arrows couldn't kill as good as your set up. Refreshing to see ya keeping it real. Keep em sharp OSR

I didn't have a scale, I do now. My guess is close to 300#s. I've got a custom Bob Lee being built, 70-72@ 27"s. I'm getting 168fps with 755grain arrow currently . Will let you know what the Lee does in a few weeks.

Yep that's a great Texas hawg..They are some of the toughest critters in the lower 48..:)but thankfully, live mostly on pretty flat ground..:)That one's gonna need some slooow cooking..:)
I have appreciated heavier bows..over 70#@30" draw with 10 grains of arrow per pound of draw weight for years..Close to and over 200 FPS..
I can still manage them well even at mid 60 years..
ESP for elk or other tough game like bears and hogs..the extra mass-penetration does make a difference..Jim

Bryan, IF you are speaking about 185 off the bowvelocity with your rig?..That will work.. And you are correct..a bit longer draw seems to assist the speed of the arrow..as does the crispness of one's loose and basic brace height-string- arrow tuning stuff..Jim

Somebody brought up arrow speed so I will chime in. I have a 63-pound Highwood Hunter (recurve made by a local boywer) that we chronographed at 205 fps. The shot was at 30-inch draw length with an aluminum arrow and a field tip.
I didn't make the shot...I only draw 29 on a good day but I was impressed by that speed and later acquired the bow. it is my fastest bow but since I shoot mostly cedar and draw and inch less, it likely hasn't shot that fast lately.
Just saying that it is not impossible to get that speed from a only slightly heavy bow.

IF one can manage a heavier longbow or recurve..and it's efficient..and one shoots arrows bigger than knitting needles close to 200 FPS..( 10 GPP of draw weight) and sharp broadheads..AND can hit the killing spots on heavier game....
He will have a setup that'll provide great penetration and impart more FPS of energy for that task than the same arrow speed with a lighter bow and arrow will..
The majority of posters here are hunters of deer under 200#s on the hoof..at less that 25 yards..so they don't need such firepower..:)Jim

Glf, shoot a 700 grain arrow out of both bows and the 60# recurve might win! From the little bit of testing I've done the only way to get anywhere close to compound energy is with a heavier arrow. I don't own a compound but many if my friends do.

I shot and unfortunately lost a 400+ lb boar a couple years ago. I felt the shot was good, but lost blood after the arrow came out. The pig had retreated back into a impenetrable sanctuary are that could only be accessed by a pig...or dozier...or a smaller man wondering on his knees.
Hit him hard (no noise upon hit) with an 800g arrow lead by a 300g steelforce singl bevel so sharp I could almost hear it cutting the night! It was a 15 yard shot in the dark and I was using my 82lb at 30" draw..at the time I drew about 30.5" bow ...about 195 fps.
The broadhead penetrated the other side barely and the arrow drove to the wrap. I found the arrow a few yards from the hit, broken in to pieces. Just goes to show you that you can't shoot through everything even if you are shooting enough for Buff. Oddly enough, I have made awesome shots on deer with out complete penetration using the same set up...go figure. Just too many things going on during a shot to qualify every scenario.

elitist, I would think so but in close. What you need is well tuned arrows and sharp heads. After that, shot placement. Heavier arrows and more draw weight for bigger animals is a plus but not always necessary.
In a perfect world, there are a lot of things that will do. I personally like the feeling of the heavier bows (even though it is not always necessary)and a little or lot more insurance for those out of the box situations.
As long as you are accurate, shoot what is legal or what makes you happy...heavy or light. Shooting less weight is definitely not the key to accuracy.
I have had a great year for me in what few events I have shot in this year scoring at or over 80% on all ranges including making it to the final four at the Howard Hill event. I did it all with a 64 lb bow and 700g arrows. Not what I would call light and I definitely shoot it better than the 54lb I had just moved up from. It's all a personal thing and no one ever wins this argument.

That's dandy hog for sure. Last time I was over at Granger I saw a big red hog that MIGHT have been that big. Couldn't get in position for a shot though.
As for hog hunting in Texas...there's scads of them on public land, at least around where I live.

Got this guy Monday, 6:20 pm shot him bit far back. Gave him an hour before taking up the trail. He was bedded close to where I last saw him, approximately 150yards. Follow up shot was thru a small opening in heavy brush and hit him in the spine, required another arrow to finish him.

Big Jim, do you feel like you got lungs on the big boar you lost? Getting two holes thru a big boars lungs is my goal, a pass thru would require shooting one of Mr. Barbee's old hunting bows and I don't think I'm going to try that!

I feel like I got lungs and that he was dead. Problem: with no blood after 30 yards and unable to stand up in the cover (crawling only), how do you search in impenetrable block of swamp and brush that is 100 acres or more?
My buddy Preacher was near there three days later and spotted some buzzards. He made an attempt to get close using his machete and couldn't get with in 50 yards as he became to entangled in brush and briers to even swing his machete.
