I am looking for a knife sharpener to use while hunting. I would like one to keep in my pack and it's main use will be for sharpening my knives for field dressing an animal. Todd

Hey Todd a Jewel Stick works for me in the field. It sharpens well and slides back into the handle so it is compact and my pockets stay clean.

Bjorn, Where do I get one?

These days I use DMT Diafolds. http://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/Double-Sided-Diafold-P12C7.aspx

I commonly carry the coarse/fine which is 325/600 mesh. When I sharpen them at home,I finish with the extra, extra fine/extra fine which is 1200/8000 mesh. They are light and compact.

Try a knife made of s30v its the best steel i have tried.Three deer and two pigs never sharpened.I think you should sharpen once and us a hone your knife.I think a Arkansas stone is hard to beat to sharpen with..

Try a RADA sharpener. Makes a razor sharp edge with a few strokes. Frank

KME is the best knife sharpener I have used. I know they are offering a field kit on their website.

I definutly agree on the Rada as well used it today as a mater of fact. I got to of them one goes with me and one stays home.

I have a KME knife and BH sharpeners and haven't learned how to use them yet. I thought I might over the past winter but it didn't happen. I fooled around a little with it and didn't get the results I wanted yet.

Todd here is a link. Made in USA http://www.jewelstik.com/sporting-goods/flipstik

Another vote for the rada. I have one at home, one at the cabin, and one in my pack. Cheap, simple and effective.

I carry the 3Rivers 2 blade pocket sharpener for my broad heads and my knives. They retail for $21.99 and it works great.

Gatco Edgemate is excellent. Inexpensive and will put a razor edge on a butter knife. About $15.

Alaska Bowhunting Supply makes something similar but smaller yet. A lot more expensive than Gatco. I have both and have never found anything better.

3Rivers carries the Jewelstik. Also, I don't hunt elk but I have a friend in CO that carries the Havalon knife with replaceable blades. He says he goes through 3 blades on an elk. I think the blades are thin so it's not for prying. They are scalpel sharp and I've skinned 4 deer with the same blade. Skeet

Radu works great on knifes and broadheads.

Another vote for RADA. I'm embarrassed how easy it is.

Accu Sharp, you can't go wrong. Jim :)

If you are just touching up your blade, you might already have something with you. You can hone an edge on Denim, a leather belt, the back of a Legal Pad, the side of a Screw driver shaft, a car window, the side of a field point, the spine edge of a Folding Saw....

I left out the best one...I just sharpened my knife on the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug this afternoon. Works great

The trusty file..... it will do everything.

I have tried the RADA numerous times and can never get past a certain point - certainly never razor sharp? Is there something I am doing wrong? Perhaps the initial grind on my broadheads is not at a low enough grind? I use simmons and for the life of me the rada wheel just makes a dull edge at best. Would love to be able to use the two I have so open to suggestions.

Rada here as well. Inexpensive, EASY to use, and great on most edged implements. DT1983 I suggest using LIGHT pressure on the last 2 or 3 draws through the wheels and then a light stropping on a belt, knife sheath, et. al, whatever you have. It works for me! I personally don't need to SHAVE a deer, just punch a big hole through to let the blood drain out. Osprey out.

DT Most people use too much pressure. Sometimes less is more (when it comes to this) Unless the blade/edge is really dull or nicked, light strokes are only needed

From: SteveBNY

Angle of draw on the RADA make the difference. I draw thru the wheels with the handle of the knife up 30 to 40 degrees.

From: JustSomeDude

The Rada works well but your blade had to be at the same angle as the Rada, It is really fast at working out dents in a blade.

From: rpk@work
Date: 03-Sep-14

For the RADA, you have to get the blade worked down to match the wheels. Depending on the blade, it could take quite a few strokes. Go with light pressure on the last few strokes, a quick strop doesn't hurt. Once the blade and wheels match, you can re-sharpen with just a few strokes.

OK I'll give it another shot again tonight. I woked one voer last year for an hour or so, using light pressure and angling the point down - still could not get it razor sharp like I can using hones and ceramic stone. I'll give it another shot as I bought two of these and it would be nice to be able to use it out in the field.

learn to sharpen a pocket knife till it shaves & use nothing but a Arkansas soft stone & your boot top.

then you can sharpen pretty much anything.

From: DT1963

Have no problem sharpening most things.

I tried the Radar wheel again and still no luck getting then even close to shaving sharp. ... sorry but I can get a better edge with just a file
