Rooty the old Root bows have a very classy look for what they cost back in the day. You see a few come up for sale but not many in great shape. I only have the two but there is room for more if the right one comes along. What is up with the embedded photo when I posted the last pic. Lance

Roots are beautiful bows.

I picked this Gamemaster up on eBay about two weeks ago in a buy it now...almost fell of my chair when I saw it (and the price)...I have really wanted one since reading others (Rooty and rattlesnake)stories of them. Any way to tell the date of manufacture? It has one fewer laminations on the back than Cameron's bow pictured. The decal is almost gone but the GM in the riser nailed it. The draw weight looked like "67#" but it was a 57#...there was a scuff on the riser just beside the 5. Thanks for the great thread and pics!!

From: rattlesnake
Date: 13-Sep-14

pdid,,,that looks to me a 1956,...i have the same bow 62"- 49#@28",....take your time and refinnish it your bow is a classic and will shoot with the best of them,.....mine likes cedar arrows , but if i do my job it will shoot aluminuim just fine,...never tried carbon out of one?..im pretty much a woodie guy.....nice bow...jeff/snake

Not entirely Root, but a Shakespeare RH300 that draws a smooth #62@28. Actually inherited from Cameron and about to be my primary hunter this season. Mind you, I have some nice higher end bows, but after about 10 arrows I knew this one was going to the deer woods with me:-)

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 14-Sep-14

Just doesn't have the Root name. They were all made in the same factory in Big Rapids, Mi.

From: Pdiddly
Date: 14-Sep-14

Thanks for clarifying the year Jeff...how do you date the manufacturing year of these older Roots? BTW, it was that picture of you with the Root that you inherited and the nice buck you took with it that piqued my interest in the Gamemaster. They sure have a beautiful design and seem advanced for the era. It will be three weeks until I get mine as a friend is bringing it to me from the US...he said the finish is in very good shape. I can't wait! In regards to Mr. Stout's post he answered a question I had as the Shakespeare bows looked very similar...I know eventually the two companies merged but was unclear on how far back their collaboration went...now I have an answer, or part of one. I also have a 1968 Warrior X-100 that's a "Root by Shakespeare" (should be the other way around!) Excellent shooter!

cool rooty and pdid,,,sorry for late post ,ive been hunting and away from computer,..as far as identifying root there was a root archive website that showed all root bows made and pictures,....try looking up ernie root bows archives etc,...that was years ago though,....google etc.....but im pretty positive a 1956...snake

From: rattlesnake

or archery archives,...then go too roots...etc

From: Pdiddly
Date: 20-Sep-14

Thanks for the additional info...tried the search but links seem to be gone...I have checked out the Vintage Root and Shakespeare Archery blogspot and that was helpful but didn't show the variance between the 50's bows...
