I've had success for nearly 30 years using a simple deer lure made from vanilla extract and a small amount of deer urine - 90% vanilla extract to 10% deer urine (or 10% Indian Buck lure).
Deer really like the vanilla odor and are not put off by it and the small amount deer lure may settle them down in my opinion based on years of usage.
I hunt from the ground as well and have them come in to me one time or another each season with this simple but effective lure.
Some also swear by apple cider with some deer musk in it as well.

I quit using any deer urine or such years ago. I found it more likely to alert them or even spook them at times. Vanilla itself is good without anything else. I also rub wild garlic on my shoe soles and sides when walking the area. Everything I use nowadays is natural; wild tea, allspice in the pockets...even rub some raw garlic in to my skin on the underside of my arm at the elbow. It will permeate your skin and get in your system.
Now, that said....you still need the breeze in your favor since deer detect odor on the molecular level. You can fool them now and then, but not enough to count on it.

The one time I hunted Whitetail I found a well browsed example of one of their favourite broadleaf shrubs and scraped off about a foot of bark on one side.
Two days later I shot my one and only whitetail deer while she was checking it out.
I've also put a couple of drops of Anised oil on my pants cuffs and had animals follow that but not react to my own scent that I must of also left behind.
Jack.

Best deer lure? An estrous doe. If you're hunting and you see an estrous doe go by you've just recieved one of hunting's best gifts because a buck(s) coming by isn't a matter of "if", but "when".

I use to put anise oil on pant cuffs but stopped. I had deer follow my trail in. I just decided to not use anything and be very conscious in regards to the hunting the wind. But I bet this vanilla lure would work great!!!

The one I had most luck with as far as a cover scent and deer actually sticking their nose to and licking it when I'd soak little leather tensile cut tabs of it and hang from limbs around my stands. That was the old original Trails End #307 I think the number was although I'm thinking it might have been a different number back then and didn't have so called buck attractant scent in it. It was just an all season attractant cover scent and it was strong.
I think it was the anise in it that was so strong. Liquorice smell. You could have a little leather soaked tab 20yds from you and still smell it. They finally weakened it up and may have changes the formula and the name..anyway I quit using it.
But I believe you could have some good luck with mixing the anise with something,,Maybe anise and vanilla and have a good cover or attractant scent.

Because of CWD they are thinking of banning deer urine in some states because it spreads through urine and feces. I had a buddy who tried apple juice for a cover scent and got bit a couple of times by bees swarming him.

I mix apple juice and vanilla. It seems to mask my scent walking in pretty well.

I know a guy who nails a peanut butter lid to a tree then screws the jar to it n cuts out the bottom. He does this about a month before season. Once its gone you just screw another jar to it. He kills a lot of deer eating peanut butter. Mostly does n small butcks but it does work in at least one area, lol.

Does the vanilla help with biting gnats? Surely probably not Mosquitos?

Heres what I plan to try this season a good and saturated pee from a bottle over the night I am going to drag it into my buddys stand and see if it works that I supect it will. He has agreed to this just because he loves hunting my stand its a constant producer.
I figure if they tear up the scrapes I pee in they will want some of me just because I have sugar in my urine. Another words she is sweet pee don't fail me now.LOL
Tried vanila as well as anice and they are all attractants it seems but be aware they also bring the bugs as well so watch where you place it.
I to like the garlic it works also for me too I eat enough of it as it is don't need to rub it on I don't think for me. Tinks had garlic pills years ago I used.LOL
Deer that aren't bothered by humans act much differant in the wild settings that are in housing developments and farmers they smell humans all the time and if they assciate with food sorces thats even better they aren't on alart like out in open country.
I have had supposed fresh deer extrous shipped into me and its no differant than bottled stuff. I have never been able to get a drag to work for me because the animals are to close to be when I get into my stands they come as soon as i put down the drag so I stoped using that. I don't like long walks I feel yyou disturb to much and educate the animals to much getting in and out so i set close to easy acess to get into stand faster.
Build baracades to force them to walk your way at a crossing and you will get enough shooting if the animals you are set up on.
No need for all this Madison Avenue stuff you got to get some is just a selling ploy.
You can use sugar on a rag also with some honey.I vae used that after I took out of a zip lock and hung it in a tree near a shooting lane. Theres plenty of attractants on the market that all work it just gets costly because after it rains you need to apply out again the rain washed it away.
It can't hurt really learning these things because on any given day it might work. Never stop trying things its how we learn.
Get yourself some Cocain and I don't mean the ilegal stuff. I always have it out works for me in my mineral site its good and dug out all my stand sites.

Bought 3 bottles of the stuff, still in the package, kept in his basement, so I am sure it is still good........
This is mostly Vanilla smells pretty good.....
I know one thing, deer love peanut butter, always see their tracks sniffing around my dog proof sets............

Some states restrict scent attractants to spray-only types during deer season...i.e., common 'peoplefood' items like peanut butter or honey are technically illegal if used as bait. So be sure to be familiar with the laws of your particular state before setting up an attractant station.
I suppose if you wanted to rub some peanut butter onto yourself yourself it might in that case be considered a 'scent'...but best not to sit near any ant nests, lol.

We are the only animal that can reason, supposedly, but we can't figure out how to outwit an animal that has had no help other than it's instinct since time began. We turn to lures, bait, etc., rather than learn to hunt using he wind and a level playing field. How about not expecting someone or something to do the work for you. Maybe it will elevate your senses and make you a much better hunter.
