Got this one last week. It was a good hunt. I used a #62 hornes longbow, cedar shaft and a woodsman head. No luck with my elk tag this year but I'm pretty happy with the deer.

Chris, Well done. Nothing like a very nice early season Mulie still in velvet. Elk are definately a "being in the right place at the right time" proposition. James

Shot was a little back. I still got both lungs and he only went 40 yards before expiring which is fantastic. The less suffering the better.

Awesome! I have killed a few whitetails so far, and I'm hoping to get my first with my recurve this season, but I also would love to kill a nice muley some day. I live in IL, so it'll probably take a while before that happens...

The story goes like this. We only had a couple days to hunt for deer cause I had a elk tag this year and that's pretty much were all my time and priority was going towards. We found an area were we knew there was some deer moving from there feeding area to there bedding area so we set up a couple ground blinds around the trail. I set my buddy up in what we thought was the better position because the goal was to get him a deer because I had the elk tag. I set up a couple hundred yards down from him basically so I could watch every thing unfold. At about 6:15 in the morning sure enough this 4x4 came walking down the trail right at my buddy such was nice cause we had no idea that that buck was even in the area. The buck continues to feed right to him well within range for him and my heart stars racing because I know at any moment I'm going to see an arrow get released. The buck keeps walking and keeps walking further and further past my buddy and still no arrow so I'm freaking out because at this point I think he's asleep in the blind. The deer ends up walking completely past my buddy right to me and hangs up at 30 yard and begins to feed again. I could of had a shot at this point witch I'm comfortable taking but I thought he will either get closer or he will wind me and run back to my buddy witch was the whole reason we were even deer hunting. I sat and watched the buck feed for a good ten to fifteen minutes and all he was doing was getting closer. He ended up feeding to me at about fifteen yards and I just couldn't pass the shot up. And you all know how that ended. Well what happened to my buddy was when he was in the blind he wasn't asleep he actually drew back on the buck but got his broad head stuck in the side of the blind and couldn't get it out. He shoots a compound bow so I could only imagine how difficult it would be to let up on the draw and get the arrow of he rest and putt a new one on. He just didn't have enough time. I kind of felt bad but he was happy for me and we got some meat to share anyway. I used a 125 grain woodsman and have been very pleased with them. Arrow was a complete pass through. This is a Nevada buck from unit 103. We set up a base camp this time because of lack of time. I usually like to back pack into this country witch is my preferred method but it all worked out. As far as the hoody goes it was cold and rainy HA HA. Thanks Chris

Great Story Chris. Thanks for sharing.
It is odd how often the act of setting your hunting partner in the best spot delivers great opportunities for other than the designated shooter.
Great Photo, great story.
We hope to see a similar photo when you fill the elk tag.
