Never used an elevated rest, do the bear weather rest work ok for hunting? How should you set them up? I've read you should cut the bottom off so they're closer to shelf, you tell me the best way!

Pros - no maintenance, reliable, and economical. A good choice for recurves with a wide, flat shelf. Cons - they seem to wear fast where the shaft rubs along the side against the riser. I eventually get a deep groove which effects dynamic spine a little. The NAP flipper rest is made of a hard plastic material, and seems to last longer than the weather rest. I cut the bottom off of a flipper rest to lower it about 1/8" with good results. I see no reason why it will not work with the weather rest.

Here's how I have one set up. I cut of the top half and use Velcro as the strike plate.....great rest.

I cut and epoxied a toothpick where the "strike plate" was on one of my older bows and it worked great. It really helped with the wearing of the rest.

Great rests. Roger has got a good idea, they do wear. Hoyt Hunter is nearly the same and seems to wear a little slower. In my opinion closer to the shelf is way over rated. Shoot half a day and you'll adjust to the new site picture. I even cant the bow when needed and it still shoots fine.

I wish someone would some better elevate rests; none of them are great, IMO esp. from an aesthetic point of view. At least the weather rest does work OK even w/o a flexible side flap.

Great rest , especially for hunting . Very durable just remember to raise your nock point . Helps when shooting vanes on a rainy day.

Just some tips here, guys, because I've experimented with this rest so much. If your seeing excessive wear on the srike plate's "nub", I call it, then it's probably due to a stiff arrow or at least a stiff arrow reaction. That could be as simple as too thick on the two sided tape that adheres the rest to the bow. I prefer to peel off the tape that comes with the rest and use outdoor mounting tape by 3M - it's thinner(so it gets the rest closer to the bow for a weaker arrow reaction) and peels off cleaner when changing out the rest. You may also want to consider shaving the "nub" off with a razor blade. If your noticing wear on the launcher arm it may be the rest is oriented incorrectly on the bow. I've found the Weather Rest cradles the arrow best when the front of the rest(left side for a right handed archer) is mounted at some angle down and the back of the rest above, so it more closely follows the angle of the arrow at rest on the string..........Make sense? ;^)
You can do just about anything with the Bear rest. They're dirt cheap, so it makes experiments easy on the wallet.

good thread. I am looking to try a raised rest too. Are the feather rests that sit on the shelf rather then attach to the side any better?

Elkhuntr, in my opinion, no, feather rests really don't accomplish what the Weather Rest and similar one's do. Not to say that feather rests are bad, they are actually quite useful, again, imo only, but I like raised stick-ons quite a bit better.

Thanks guys, I just ordered a Hoyt hunter and a Hoyt super rest from lancaster archery for $5.00 thanks to mr. Stout. If I don't like them I've surely not lost much!

I am a fan of the Bear weathrest for sure. Lately I've started using a Parabow brush rest from St. CHARLES archery(off eb@y). They work better in my opinion, at least for me.

I'm with Roger on this one. Got the idea because my arrows on my Martin Hunter were going a little to the left. I cut the top of the rest off and put Velcro on just as in his picture, that solved the problem! Hawk
