Hunter's shot today.... 11 yards at a broadside target from an elevated position. This is the real deal... what you have been practicing for all year... one shot is all you get... Make it count!!! :)

God Bless,

As called. Back to Saskatchewan tomorrow. Cameron

I made exactly that shot on a black bear in 2012 with the bow Cameron has with him right now...no brainer with that bow, the arrow was through the lungs before I knew I had dropped the string

Even earlier here in Alberta and cold enough that when I picked up the target to move it there was ice on the ear...lesson here is if you are going to switch from shooting split finger to shooting two under you need to shoot that way all the time, otherwise you are going to shoot low, even at 10 metres (that is Canadian for 11 yards)

You might find it odd but I got the bow in a trade with Cameron...I was really not all that interested in it being my only seventies Grayling Bear until I shot it yesterday and then ran some over the Chrony...not a fast bow but plenty fast enough with a small grip that will work well with a glove on...just called Bob Morrison and it is off to his place for some Eastern Diamondback skins, the only way to go over shiny black limbs...guess I will need to find another deer hunting bow for this year...can anyone say 1960 Kodiak

Morning First Shooters. Thanks for the call, CD. You are the best. I shot off the truck box as called. I am having some back pain from laying around with some kinda bug the last 2 days. I figured it was time to let my ego go and goto the lighter bow for season anyway. I think the 45# Ben Pearson Special from the 60s will do just fine. It was my first store bought bow and now 50+years later, I probably shoot it with less effort and thought than my newer bow.

The shot this morning would be a bad one. The green bamboo is junk. You can see my arrow in the black dot and it was straight and the bow is quiet. I just did not follow through. I will be hunting a small wood lot that I do not have permission to retrieve my deer if it goes off the property. This deer may go only 25 to 60 yds and lay down and die, if not disturbed. I just have to make a better shot at an undisturbed deer to be successful.

You guys still amaze me at your excellent shooting. I can shoot good groups after about my third group of 3 for the day at the short distances, but that "First Shot" is always an adventure. I always shoot a few groups before a hunt when I can.

I know there is no second chance at a first shot but missing by as much as I did played on my mind...had to try it again and the Kodiak Magnum did its job...that is gonna be my deer bow this fall...I can shoot two mule deer and three whitetails where I will be hunting...5 deer, an elk and a moose ought to fill my freezer eh?

Off the peak of the roof at 1030....looked like this. MAN! Got a great day goin' on so far. Already home from a swap meet...found a sweet Snap On puller set for way cheap and got a line going on a cherry '77 Triumph Siver Jubilee. Good times. Got to make a decent shot to keep it going.....

.... may have been a nick higher than we looked. Shot kneeling, and stradling the ridge to stay under the limbs. '69 Super and Woodsman tipped GTs.

Thank you Chad and a great holiday weekend to all our FIRST SHOT Compadres;

My shot was about 14yds didn't want to climb and change it. Was wearing hat/facenet haversack over shoulder. That's the way I hunt that the way I shot. Little low little back Hoyt Excel/TT blackmax limbs. Beamen 500 175 up front. Have a good weekend and be observant to anything out of place. Be Safe CBC

Yarrrk I shot my first shot before I checked here.

Target 3-D bear, distance standing 25 yards.

Shot a little low but in the lower chest area maybe nicked the bottom of the heart.

Bow Green Bear Kodiak Hunter 52lb.

Arrow Whispering Wind Split hex.

Shot as called 11 yds and I was elevated 12 feet. Just a tad East of where I was looking but this would have been trouble for the deer. I'm shooting a Black Canyon 62"- 49#s with a Great Northern adjustable quiver. I shoot GT 3555 3 under with a tab. 175 gr field point.

Thanks for the calls CD! Thanks for the prayers cbc while we were traveling! I managed to climb 1- 14er while in Denver. Mt Bierstadt near Mt. Evans. I am very impressed with anyone able to hunt the mountains in Colorado! You better be in very good condition or have some mountain horses/mules (and be in shape). I saw a small herd of elk feeding south of I-70 coming back into Denver and then a large herd at 12,000 feet at the visitor's center on the Trail Ridge Road outside of Estes Park. Beautiful country! I wonder if I would have to recalibrate my shooting in that thin air? :-)

Here I am on the summit of Mt. Bierstadt. 14,060'. The hike is approximately 3-1/2 miles to the summit from the trailhead with a 2500 feet elevation gain. You start out above the tree line.

Yes it was cold!

Nice shot there Matt, the picture too. I can see some nice Elk meadows over your left shoulder.

Got home late, but still enough light for a shot. As called, target set 11 yards from the elevated deck. Shooting from about 14' over the target. Mike Sullivan "Shadow" and a 2213 with a Zwickey Delta. Perfect height and about an inch out of center. That big blade made up for me and cut into the spade.

Thanks for the dream call CD. Great day to all.

I got my shot in just as it was getting dark. PERFECT hunting time!!! Was in my 10ft ladder stand shooting my '70 Kodiak Hunter.

Shot was an inch or so high, but it would have gotten the job done for sure!!!

Yea Matt, that high country is breath-taking! Literally!!! haha

I wasn't planning on a trip to CO this year, but your pic is trying to convince me otherwise!
