I just bouhgt a new salt block and placed it out back yesterday, at 12:30, I walked back there to place some apples and pears so that the deer would find the new block.
A buck either 8 or ten pointer ran from it, its 90deg out there, 57 deg this morn. the block was made byunited salt corp. houston texas. and called Ranch House trace mineral salts. for those who would like to know.
I have not seen a deer from the house in the day for some time.

Ive never had luck getting deer to come to mineral blocks. Across town My brother has one that deer visit daily.
But to be honest I have a guy that has 80 acres on the other side of me that has feeders, food plots, minerals and a pond
I have a hard time getting deer to visit me

Just get a bag of salt and put it in a pile and cover it up with dirt. They'll find it and start digging it up. I got a spot in my yard where the leach bed is and those deer come in every night and dig it up getting the salt. I use salt for my water softener that is what their after.

I use the cheap mineral/salt licks from the local farm store. The deer definitely hit them, I've got 1000s of photos of deer using them. The good bucks only hit them at night around here.

We only put out Sodium Chloride on our farm when we use salt blocks. Big Six Trace Minerals contains Cobalt, a known carcinogen, as do many other mineral products available. At 40 ppm it doesn't seem like a lot, but it is there and a toxic chemical.

r-man, I've seen deer spook from various things that are new to the area. Sometimes it may take them a few days to get used to it. Camera will tell you if they are coming at night.

:) Thats an idea But he had put a lot of work in that place. So I cant fault him. He has some real monsters up there I heard. Its posted ,so Ive never been on his land. But the guy that takes care of it and stocks the feeders has shown me some impressive pics.
But Ive heard a buck will travel a 4 mile radius during the rut.
But I like shooting does as I think they are better table fare.

I am told that deer like the taste of plain, white salt better than the Trace Mineral Salt. I put out TM salt because of the extra minerals. Helps does grow fawns and bucks grow antlers.
Deer still hit salt and minerals at times all through the year, but most heavily in the spring and early summer. I have set out TM blocks since 1990, and those places have more tracks than the Kansas City stockyards. It really isn't a bait, in a way. Around here, deer hit salt nocturnally.
Lately, I've been putting out TM salt loose, (poured out of a bag), because there's been a rash of "hunters" moving my salt block across property lines when season starts.
Good luck,
Joseph

I put out salt to help with antler growth. I guess it has other health factors as well. It is something that is inexpensive a land owner can do to improve the health and size of his antlers.

There is still conjecture that supplemental feeding with such things may contribute to things like CWD. But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. A whitetail will get all the minerals they need in their natural habitat. As soon as we start supplementing, we change nature and the animal's own system, including the immune reactions that are natural to them.
Salt blocks (Sodium Chloride) only here. The fact that Pa. now has some issues with CWD should be a wake-up call to people who think they know more about game than biologists do.

I use them both. They come to them more in spring and summer. they go into ground and they make it a permanant mineral site eventually that will get action all through the year.

Animals and people need minerals to build good cells. I don't know about deer, but people need trace amounts of cobalt to produce vitamin b-12. Cyanacobalomine (sp?) However, suplimentation could upset the balance. I let nature feed nature. Nature knows a lot more than I do. Afterall, nature's been around a lot longer than any of us.

Be sure to check the regulations in your area.
Salt/mineral blocks could be seen as baiting.

I use lucky buck! If it's not the right place they will let you know. We've put 6 in on a farm deer took to 3. We keep cameras on those 3 get all kinds of pictures. They start utilizing in January the bucks come along later then the summer heat with velvet they go bizerk. Interesting process I've put it out in August with not a image to ease by in February and see a crater from the late winter deer hammering it. You can put out too much concentration and the deer won't touch it till leaching happens it'll diffuse the content. My application I clear a piece about 6x6 circle not a leaf. Dig a trench around it so if it rains it still gets held in the site I then break the whole middle loose and crater another hole in the middle kinda like the deepest part is the middle the loose soil and middle draw it all into the hole rather then it leaking off. A $18 20lb bucket for a month is way better for images over 6 $10 bags of corn for the same period. I'll show some pictures of what I got the first is a site I started in January of this year.

This is the February site as of early this month. Lucky buck recommends a bucket a month I had a trail cam on this site from our clubs work day in May till early August and the site drew deer the entire time. I normally refresh with half a bucket and this site lasted 4 months on 10lbs of minerals I haven't been back now for almost a month so this was the whole bucket applied. Before I left

Add a bag of pelletized lime and watch them tear it up. Lime is calcium.
