I thought it would be a neat idea to have an online labor day tournament. 1st Prize will be a handmade by me plaque commemorating the win, I will post a picture soon as its made. Since im sure most people don't have a standard target, targets will be homemade by the competitor from a paper plate, instructions to follow. The purpose of the tourney is preparation for upcoming hunting season. There will only be one class, Traditional Hunter. You must use your hunting setup and it must be a longbow or recurve. If at least 4 people request a selfbow class I will make an additional plaque and we will have a selfbow class. Only requirements for selfbow class will be selfbacked or cloth/rawhide backed, no performance enhancing backings allowed.

RULES 1. Honesty will play a huge role in this tournament, I trust that everyone here will follow the rules, cheating will only hurt you. 2. Your score must be shot on labor day at any time. No shooting the day before and posting that score. 3. You can shoot as many warm up arrows you want at a non tournament target, but once you put the paperplate tournament target on your backing you only get 5 warm up arrows. 4. After 5 warmup arrows shot at paper plate target you shoot 20 arrows for score. Record your points as well as how many x's and post your score in the thread! If you hit a line you count the higher score. 5. Distance to target is 18 yards. 17.3 is tough to calculate ;) so, as this tourny is very informal and honesty is key, if you don't have a range finder, a paced off 18 steps is perfectly acceptable. If your short, take big steps ;)

Target creation: Use a standard paper plate about 8.75" across. Use a ruler and place a mark at 1.5" and 3" in from the outside edge. Do that at the top, bottom, and both sides of plate and then connect those lines with arcs to make the rings. Place a quarter in the middle of the plate and trace around it, then remove it and color the quarter sized circle a solid color. The outer ring is worth 2 points, next ring is 4 points, and center ring is 6 points. The colored in quarter is also worth 6, but it counts as an x, so record the x's in case we need to break a tie. The solid quarter also gives you something to aim for. I am including two pictures, one of a target halfway complete, and the other a finished target. It took more time to write this paragraph than to make the target, it only takes a minute to draw out this target guys.

Alright guys, I would like to hear who all plans to participate!

Here is the target under construction.

Also, if anyone wants to kick in additional prizes for 1st or other places please feel free and post away.

If this recieves a large response we'll do it again next year onwards!

May I suggest a compass for making CONCENTRIC circles? And 20 arrows in one target could be tough to score! 4 targets with five arrows each would make more sense.

From: Hunt OH
Date: 23-Aug-14

I am going to lose but think I will try. Don't believe we have any family plans for that day.

From: Big Dog
Date: 23-Aug-14

Sounds like fun but I will be on the road Labor Day.....Good Luck and Regards.

From: 6point
Date: 23-Aug-14

Awesome, looks like we have some competitors already!

No one needs to use a compass to make the circles, this is very informal, just for fun.

You can shoot as many arrows as you want, then pull them to count your score. One at a time, or all 20, makes no difference.

I'll have the plaque done tomorrow and will post a pic!

6P, you realize this target will drive the civil engineers bonkers, if they already were not. I love the informality and non-controlling aspect of a good non-competitive, competition.

Thanks again and I can't wait to shoot before the opener of dove season at noon on Sept. 1.

From: 6point
Date: 26-Aug-14

Chief, looks good! I knew it would probably drive some perfectionists so crazy they wouldn't even be able to compete, lol. I'm glad it's had a positive response so far though. Can't wait for the 1st!

I thought about having a team event, instinctive vs gappers, but I'm afraid to much virtual blood would be spilled!

6point, I'm glad SOMEONE has a sense of humor around here, but seriously, who couldn't stare hard at that thing all day? Coincidence? I think not! Perhaps that is the secret to his long range success... Since no one else has objected, I may have to experiment with this theme myself... - John

Fisher Cat (John), some folk envision golf balls on the spot they want to hit, some ping pong balls, etc, etc.

I envision nipples, and when I can see them I never miss. Trouble is, I can't always see them.

Rick

From: Jim Davis
Date: 30-Aug-14

Be that as it may, but Rick, if you look at the illustrated target at the top, yours is wrong-side-out.. I'm just saying...

It's kind of frilly around the edges too...

From: Rick Barbee Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 30-Aug-14

Jim, the illustrated plate target shown by 6point is bottom side up. Mine is also. It's just a different type/more feminine looking plate. 8^)

Rick

From: Fisher Cat

Seven 4s, thirteen 6s, score of 106, only 2xs. 18 yards, 42 lbs. I know some will say 42 lbs is not hunting weight but it was all I could do to shoot 20 arrows with 42lb with my very bad shoulders. Alabama law says we can hunt with 35lb but I shot the max I could, 42, to avoid advantage of even lower pounds.

82 with 3x's and 2 misses

Samick Sage 45# This was good for me. But on every End (of 5 arrows) my last two shots were the worst. My mind was wandering...mosquitoes landing on me etc... 1st two in each end were the best.

Congratulations to Sipsey River, winner of the 1st Annual Labor Day Tournament!

Sipsey, please pm me your address so I can get the plaque on its way. I hunt with a 40lb myself, nothing wrong with making sure the arrow goes exactly where it needs to be.

It seems we've had really positive feedback, definetly will do it again next year.

Even though this was an online tournament it has been interesting to note that the pressure affected peoples shooting. I think this was great for upcoming hunting season since shooting at a live animal certainly ups the pressure!

Thanks to everyone who participated I hope we all learned something!

Thanks 3 arrows. I wish I could pull more pounds but I would be risking a slice and dice on the old shoulder. I enjoyed the challenge of this event. Thanks John

I have a suggestion for next year. As a way to say thanks for the event, I will make the trophy/award for next year's winner. Then whoever wins next year can make the trophy/award for the year after. In other words, the winner of the event will have to make the trophy for the next year's winner.

Good idea John! That will keep those of us with no talent for creating cool ideas for awards from wanting to win. Ha Ha, Very Smart and good tactics. ;-)

Seriously, it is a good idea and CONGRAT's on the Win!

Yes, good idea. Except for if you win next year, you'll be keeping your own trophy! Oh well, I'll have to really knuckle down hard next year to beat you. I shot an 88 around 7am but didnt want to post it cause I was afraid it might be the winning score, cant keep my own trophy!

Ok, so let's say the winner one year is not eligible the next year. That way a person can't win their own trophy. That might be more fair for everyone anyhow. That would be fine with me.
