watch this video for two reasons, to see how archery is shot away from america, and to see a slender guy from hungary handle 125# and 134# bows with ease. i shot with him at bonneville in 2011. his excellence with a bow, his humor, and his ability impress me more than anyone i have ever met. weight, height, and bulk really are not major factors in the poundage you can handle easily.

See, that's what I'm talking about! 60 and pulling 37% of body mass!

I'm 67 and pulling comfortable around 32% of body mass.

(That way, guys can just calculate their own body mass against the percentage and figure out what they would be pulling)

Agree, but also holds true for how we age. At my age group (60 to 70) one see's a huge range of fit to infirm.

I could work back up in weight but to be honest I don't feel like messing with it. I draw a full 32inches and hold 2-3 seconds before release. When hunting I usually don't hold that long unless circumstances call for it.

From: GLF

Weight and mass have nothing to do with what weight you can shoot comfortably. Its what you work into. My wife was 5'3" and weighed 125 lbs. She shot 55lbs for hunting with no problems. 45 for 3d. And no, she never lifted weights. She did work out with her bow a couple times a week till she could handle the weight well, after that she never worked out, only shot.

I'm an apple not falling too far from the family tree. Dad and Granddad liked hunting bows in the 60-pound range well up into their later years, so that is what I fell into. No longer a spring chicken, but still feel most comfortable with my hunting bow around 60 to 65-pounds. I can work myself up into heavier weight, but that requires constant work for me to stay on top of a longbow above 70-pounds, whereas in the 60 to 65-pound range, I can walk away and come back cold, months later, and handle that weight with relative ease, so I've kept it there for a number of decades now.

i'll be 50 in Jan. I currently weigh 165-170.. might get as heavy as 175-180 when not as active....bows range from my favorite 54# longbow to a 70# recurve.

I wouldn't get to caught up in the age or body weight, it really don't amount to a hill of beans, and varies between individuals.

I've seen 20 yr old 6'5 250# big boys, that were weak compared to some 60 yr old 175 lb men, and ive seen 200 lb older men that were weak compared to a 150 lb farm boy...depends more on the individual.

Bow draw weight has nothing to do with body size or for the most part age.

HMM..Good tosee some of you are still shooting and hunting!..( and hopefully..HITTING THE MARK!..

I weight about 175 and am 6' nuthin'..:)

I have been working since I was a kid and shooting archery for over 50 years..I'm 67 now..

Still enjoy and shoot well with longbows and recurves mid 70#@30' draw.. I think IF I had it to do all over again..I'd settle in to about 60#@30" draw..That's about optimal for any game on the planet at intelligent distance with straight flying arrows 8-10GPP..

BUT I have so many great recurves and longbows in the 70#..++ draw weights and arrows..:) that I do my best to stay in condition so I can shoot them well..and I still do.. I also had some great coaching( Al Henderson) and some intense physical training a few years back..:)

Looking at the consensus here..no wonder there are so many vintage classic bows for sale out there in the 40-55# draw weight ranges.Jim

Not a thing wrong-headed about shooting an enjoying whatever bow ( draw weight) that you are proficient with..

There is no reason any guy, barring injury, cannot work up to 60 pounds are better easily if he wants and desires to.

I shoot year round and I can easily pull back a 75 pound bow and shoot it accurately. But I still choose to shoot 55-60 pounders most days (makes a difference when you take a first shot after sitting still in 20 degree temps all day). The key is to work up to it slowly and to develop and maintain those muscles. Of course you can kill anything in N America with 40-45 pounds, good shot placement and a good/sharp broadhead.

At 15, at 125 lb of body weight, I shot 48 and 32 lb recurves. At 68, at almost two times the weight, I shoot slightly lower for the high poundage with three bows at 45 lb, and two others at 43 and 40 lb. The difference is that at 15, I shot a lot of field archery with over 28 targets per day when shooting tournaments, so at four arrows per target, I had to shoot the 32 lb Tamerlane target bow or my shooting would suffer by the second day of a weekend tournament. Basically, I can shoot about the same draw weights as 52 years ago.

I have a few heavier bows that I shoot to build strength for the most part these days, they are in the 75-80 range. But the bows I use are 62-65#. Age 55.

I heard someone describe what actually happens to muscles as we age, and it is pretty horrifying. So I will probably have to get in touch with my feminine side soon.

From: GreyDrakkon

::cough:: And just what's wrong with being female? ;)

35yo 37# and 46# are the bows I have. Doubt I'd ever have any use for anything stronger, seems that the 46# is more than adequate, since it doesn't matter how strong the pull is if you can't hit the target.

I am 79 and prefer string follow ASLs, draw weight 45 to 55 pounds. ASLs are easier to brace for me. The force draw curve of a string follow seems to match my remaining strength. The pre-load at the beginning of the draw is my weakest point. The draw weight of a string follow ASL builds as my strength builds.

81 Yrs. 6'1", 232 lbs

Starting in 1964 my first hunting recurves were 64" recurves in the 40# range at my DL of 30.5 which, depending on the bow, usually gave me a 45# DW.

I soon went to 64" recurves with 45#@28" which usually gave me a 52#-53# DW due the commonly factory recommended brace heights of many of the earlier bows which was 9"-10".

For many years now my recurves have mostly been 64" bows at 45#.

A few years ago I did have a custom-made (White Wolf) 58" bow made to 3-under specs and my 30.5 DL 45#@30.5.

I also have a custom made TD made years ago which is a 68" TD, 50#@30.5 which I have never shot.

I have hunted for years and successfully killed much game and have never felt I needed greater DW, not once.

And I am one of them, I am happy to shoot my 45 lb bow and I can hold it at full draw for any length of time. When I was a youngster I was in awe of anyone shooting a 30lb bow and dreamed one day I might be able to.

It’s been 7 years since I replied to this post. I was shooting mainly 53# bows then and up until a year ago when I pulled something in my left shoulder lifting plywood at work. I’ve also hurt my right shoulder twice in those years. I moved down to 48# last year as the left shoulder was wanting to collapse. After a few months I was able to shoot 55# again but enjoyed the 48# bow. I got another new bow at 49# and since I shoot it with the same arrows as the 53#er I stayed with it. Performance is similar so I think I’ll stay there. I’m 65 now and 45 years of construction has taken its toll.
