Does anyone know how many black tipped '69 Kodiak Magnums Bear made? Are they fairly rare? I see very few offered for sale on Ebay. I have one that I bought a few months ago, and it has some very nice wood. I think it is supposed to be Shedua, but it looks quite a bit darker than most of the Shedua I've seen before, almost like Rosewood or cocobolo. I'll try to post a picture when I get a chance. Thanks.

Does it also have a black outer layer on the riser overlays? They are called. "Black caps " very uncommon early production in 1969. Risers that year are listed as Tiger wood. The Kodiak Hunter was also made in that version early in 1969, but you see a few more of those. I have a couple of each ... And the risers are also very dark . It is possible that some other wood type was used in those early ones , but not mentioned in the catalog. That was the case with the Zebrawood riser Kodiak Hunter in 1967. They are very rare ... and no mention of Zebrawood in the catalog .

Thanks SB. Yes, mine has the black-capped riser as well as the black tips - a very distinctive look. What percentage would you guess of the total '69 production? I'm sure there are no definitive numbers.

Bill....I couldn't even venture a guess at the percentage... but it has to be really low as far as the Kodiak Magnum. If you look at the old catalogs there is a pic in the quiver section of a spring arm quiver mounted on a black-capped Kodiak Magnum. The only pic I've ever seen of one in a catalog!

Any guess would be just a guess, but I would think less than ten to fifteen percent of them. The new Kodiak Mags have black overlays I believe with bubinga risers. Pretty slick looking. I've had two of the K-Mags with black overlays but none of the Hunters.

George ... first time I saw one of those on an auction I thought it was an old one! Then I thought... what's up with the weird serial number and black glass? I wouldn't 't mind having one of those to try left/handed . I could never shoot them R/H... but was also dealing with fits of TP. An issue I left behind after switching sides ...

I have a black tip/black capped 69 Kodiak Magnum left hand that I mistakenly bought on eBay some time back (thought I got a great deal until I opened it and realized it was left hand). I refinished it and still need to give it one final coat (I put it off for some time now) and then I could post a pic.

Here's the new model.

Be nice if they still had access to some of the great old tropical hardwoods! Some Bubinga is gorgeous... Some is pretty blah. Custom bowyers use a lot of exotics ..... is it a limited quantity thing?

This one isn't old but has some very heavy duty tips rated @ 65#. Cameron ( the right one)

Somebody forgot the riser overlays! ;)

I don't mind no overlays. It's the plywood I don't like. Small grip compared to bubinga I have a 1968 on the way it looks good in the pics. Cameron

We won't get into the "plywood" thing.... ;)
