I recently talked to someone wishing to sell me a Bear Super Kodiak. He claims to have purchased the bow new in about 1976 and said the bow came equipped with a 3-pin sight mounted on the riser. This is the first time I've heard of a SK with factory sights. Can anyone tell me if SK ever came with sights? I believe the Kodiak Special has sights, but this guy claims the bow is only 60".

You could get sights on the bow from the factory. They were routed into the side of the riser. There were also coverplates that could be put on if you did not want to use the sights.

Here's an image of one I grabbed from the Internet.

Yep... What Phil said.

Here is a quick picture I snapped of some of mine that have sights. One has a coverplate.

The "Premier" sight was available in many Bear bows back in the day. Certainly not uncommon.

Never seen the Premier site on the hunting models! I do have a few with the integral pin site or the multiple ring site. These used a plastic base insert. The Premier site used a metal inlet base/insert. Two different set ups. The Premier aperture won't work in the plastic site base/insert used in the hunting bows!

Do any of the new Bear bows have this option?

Of course not!

To be fair to Bear - how many requests for integral sights do you think they get a year? In the late 60's and 70's lot of recurve shooters were going to sights for hunting. Today, in the eyes of many, it's almost blasphemy to mention the word sight and recurve in the same sentence.

I would expect if the demand was there Bear would offer the sights, or something similar but I don't think they'll add them to their line for the 10 or so they would sell each year.

Are the sight pins hard to find?

Occasionally/rarely, you 'll see some on the auction site....so yeah, tough to run across!

Guys today think its more "trad" to shoot barebow and be more like F.B. In actuality as long as theres been bow theres been guys finding ways to put a sight on them. The ones that came on Bears were pretty common around here in the 60's. Btw before his tp F.B. used a single homemade sight pin on his bow.

Whaa? I've not seen a picture of that or heard of FB having target panic?

Any book on Fred Bear will have that early pic of him in the 30's with a single pin sight on a longbow. Never heard about the TP thing...but he did switch to L/H after cutting a finger off!

He cut that finger off when he was like 13.

I've seen the single pin photo. He was shooting targets with an under the chin anchor at that time, with no cant. He was young and had glasses on.

Fred was a very good target archer and placed in several National tournaments. Young is relative. He was in his thirties in the thirties when he was shooting target.

SB I can't believe you never saw the Premier sight in a hunting model Bear. I had several in my shop back in the late 70's.

Nope....never have George ! Premieres in the target bows....and the pins or rings in the hunting bows. Though in my opinion the premiere would be the better site to use. I never could shoot worth a hoot with pins !

I have a super kodiac model that has the plate and sights. I have no pics. The side plate is very hard to find, so i have been told. The bow is in fantastic shape and too nice to shoot. I traded a longbow for the super kodiac from a fellow waller a while back.
