Hey guys just got a 1976 blue stripe super Kodiak. This bow is in outstanding condition not a scratch noe stress cracks and shoots like a dream. The bow is 60in and pulls 53lb at my draw although it 50lb bow. like to post pic but don't know how any help appreciated by the way pretty computer inept lol.

Brace height...8 1/4-8 1/2". ALL of my Super Kodiaks prefer somewhere in that range . I usually shoot 8 1/4.

If you have pics of the bow saved on your computer when you post hit the browse button to the left of the post box find your picture double click on it and it should attach to the thread, I too have a 76 SK mine is a 65# it is absolutely beautiful.

I love the riser overlays on those, much better looking than the white from other years.

Nice bow Rooty. The '76 was about the end of the line for really nice looking 1 piece Super K's. Looks like you've got a pair of original Nock-Rites on there as well.

I also have one which is a left over from my dads store. Never been shot.

Well, they were good looking bows, but the limb tapers and tips were lousy by that point.

Bear was DOA by that point. The 70s bows were junky compared to the bows they made in the 50s-60s.

Every serious collector would agree with me. Sorry for the harshness of the post.

I have 3 70s Bears from Grayling, all shoot great, look great, and are the finish on them is super durable. Not a "serious" collector, but I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you Ghost.

Actually it's four, forgot about my boy's Black Bear. Another great shooter

From: Ghostinthemachine

Yeah, I figured I'd get some protests. Lol. I'm good with it.

A guy like Wade Phillips, maybe the foremost authority on Bears today, would likely agree with me.

Compare a '64 Kodiak mag to a '76 Kodiak mag sometime. Case closed.

I wouldn't say the 70s bows were 'junky', but to be fair the 50s and 60s Bear bows were a hard act to follow. And in defense of the 70s bows, anecdotally they seem to hold up better than the older 50s and 60s bows (fewer deep vertical stress lines and other peculiar issues), just not as pretty as their earlier counterparts.

The mid 70s super kodiaks seem like a mixed bag - I've seen some really nice ones, and others are somewhat fugly. I happen to own two blue-stripes - one of my blue stripes has the a-typical blond hornes and is actually a sweet-looking bow! (and no, I'm not mistaking a 71 for a blue-stripe, this is actually a blue-stripe with the plastic raised coin, and the horns are straight-up BLOND, very cool actually). My other blue stripe is the standard gray/blue futurewood - it was completely bleached yellow on one side by the sun when I got it, apparently someone had it on display at their home exposed to the afternoon sun, so I sent it to Rich Lopez for restoration, and now it's one of my sharpest-looking super kodiaks, has an almost purple tinge now, very unique and cool.

The Super Kodiaks of the 70s were and are some of the Best and finest shooters EVER . I have them All from 67 1/2 to 76 Not a sorry one in the Lot They Improved By Bounds from the 50s & 60s Kodiaks i have all them too !! MR Bear never went backwards on his Watch !!!

I'm with JR on this one. Lots of folks have favorite year Kodiaks and SKs but the 70's SKs were absolutely fine shooters. I don't believe the SKs are less desirable by collectors but they do bring a lower price - probably because so many of them were made compared to the 60s models.

My new to me blue stripe looks better than it performs. I built a string for it and have played around with it. I am sure I'll get it to come around but I don't feel it's going to be a super star. The grip is not to my liking I find my 59er's much better. Cameron

Totaly differnt grips the SKs were a High wrist grip wth saddle of hand going deep and little pressure on heel of hand I like all the SKs But yes i have a fav The 1967 1/2 and 1970 Just feels and preforms better and i love the look of them !! In the Kodiak the 1960 & 62 are my picks 50s i like the 1956 & 58 Just My Pics

Well said hillbillyking. That's exactly what I don't like about the grip. I have one other bow with a grip similar I think that one is a 2002 k mag. The grips are adaptable just not preferred. On this bow under 8" brace height seem better. I started at 8-3/4 and have worked my way down too 7-3/4. Cameron

From: SB

Grip shapes varied a lot between 1970 and 1976. I have a few of every year made...on identical bows some grips are perfect...and others are totally unshootable for me! Just depended on who did the grip shaping on that particular bow I guess !

I can live with it. 7-1/2 brace works best so far SB for me. Shoots ok little noisier than I like. Cameron

Crank it up to 8 1/4 and report back !

Reporting back lol. 8-1/4 is noisy on this bow. Cameron

Ok SB here's what I've come up with. 8-3/4" brace height, little fur on the string, 2117 with 200 up front. Took the buzz out of the bow. I am not done yet but a least I am finally happy with it. Cameron

From: SB
Date: 30-Jul-14

Whatever works for you Cam! A bit high for my taste but... I shoot endless strings with NO silencers on mine... But even at the same brace, some won 't quiet down untill I switch to a Flemish string with cat whiskers! I guess they are all individuals! Nice shooters though..eh?

I have one in left hand with the box and paperwork. 38 lb. Is it rare in this configuration?

Light poundage hunting model,L/H, box and paperwork? I'd call that a rare find!

Back in 1998, when I got back into archery, I ran some ads in the local newspapers where I live. A simple ad: I buy Old Archery Equipment. The first response, a blue stripe SK, 60#, like new, $40. The second response was a blue stripe SK, 45#, no string, new in the box, with the stickers, $20.00. The guy had won the bow in a raffle. That was all inside of two weeks. Never that lucky before, or since. The 1976 blue stripe SK is a classic in it's own way, it's the Bi-Centennial Super Kodiak.

Is there a way to tell which years this is 75 or 76. I was told it was a 75. Cameron

The tips are a nice color. However the square shape looks like and ugly pair of shoes. Cameron

1972 was the last year of white tip overlays on the Super-K.
