I was fortunate to belong to a club back in the 90's where our instructor was also qualified to teach the IBEP...what a great foundation that is for both shooting and hunting...how many of us are there on here who have taken the program or one similar to it?

I took the class quite a few years ago. Also took an advanced Hunters Education class here in Minnesota about the same time. I am old enough that when I started hunting Hunting/Gun Safety was not required. Some states require one or both and I thought some day I might venture beyond my state's borders. Both classes were time well spent.

I used to be an instructor for it, but haven't taught in a while so need to get recertified. Very good program IMO.

I took it in the early nineties prior to moving to Mt. I needed it the first fall out there until I qualified for resident.

I've been teaching here in Alaska the last 6 yrs. and think it's great program. If your coming here to hunt and don't have this certification you can take it on line. Look it up on www.alaska.gov and find bowhunting on the sight.

Was given a choice at conservation camp during advanced week; either take bowhunter safety or trapping. I chose the bow ;-) Many moons ago in the 90's

Took the class many years ago from Wadsworth him self. Became an instructor and taught for several years. Kansas did away with mandatory class, so it's very hard to put a class together anymore in my area. Let certification lapse!

We live in a time when instant gratification is a way of life...we hear all the time from people new to traditional archery about how they want to start hunting asap...the most telling thing I learned from the IBEP was "ARCHER FIRST, BOWHUNTER SECOND"....that is an ethic we need to promote every chance we get, knowing that ethics are something we cannot impose on anyone...I shot traditional bows, and compounds for that matter, for a full year or more before I would even consider hunting...my effective range is still within about 20 metres with a stickbow because I simply cannot shoot well enough to justify taking a shot at a living creature beyond that distance...I know if I worked very hard at it I could extend that some...I prefer to put my efforts into being a better hunter and getting closer to game, something that IBEP also addresses as I recall

Just helped teach a course this weekend, always feels good to pass on info to bow hunters just starting out so they may avoid some of the mistakes I have learned not to do. Even seasoned bow hunters will learn something they didn't know.

I tried to find a class a couple years ago before going to Montana which requires bowhunter education. Never did find an available class. When I called and talked to the guy at the state listed as running it, I was informed it was discontinued years ago for lack of interest. Kentucky is also a non-manatory state

I think folks who intend to be IBEP Instructors should be required to know the sport's history very well, and should have a working knowledge of that history. Teaching is only as good as the teacher. We see that too often in regular education.

A group of us at one of the clubs I belong to became certified in the National Archery in the Schools program last year (but we have not taught yet). I've been a Hunter Safety instructor in Michigan for 23 years and an IBEP instructor for less. I can't believe it's been 23 years.
I went to an Instructor's workshop a week or two ago. I will tell you something - I'm 53 and there were probably 5 people in a class of maybe 35 that were younger than me. If younger archers and bowhunters don't step up soon and become certified to teach - all the stuff we carry on about here will be lost within a generation.
It will just be us on the nursing home's Wi-Fi connection debating vanes vs feathers.

Just recently completed my 2nd step of the 3 step process for becoming an instructor. Step 1 is to take the class. Step two is to observe a class and step 3 is to help teach a class. I should complet the third step next summer when we offer the class again here in Oklahoma. This is a very good program and Toehead is right, we are missing the boat by not getting more kids through this program instead of allowing them to be "educated" by the hunting shows.

I have taught the NBEP(national) then it turned into the IBEP(International) then in 1989 the MBEP(Minnesota). Things change, now you can take the class on line without any field experience at all. The last class I taught we had 54 people attending and when it came to broadhead sharpening I asked how many sharpened their own broadheads, 2 hands went up, mine and instructors, things change, it was a good class. I always loved making the bloodtraials. Minnesota never made the class mandatory so the only people taking it are the out of state hunters and special hunt people.

I bought some stick on camo yesterday in a dollar store and the young lady at the till said she should have some of that for her bow...at one time I might have let that comment pass...after reading all of you comments I knew that would be indefensible...I followed up and learned that she and her boyfriend would shoot more if they had a place...now they do, they are welcome to shoot in my big yard anytime they want...sure they are wheelie bow shooters, I am too, but that can be added to, eh

George,
I bring EVERYTHING to the Bowhunter Ed classes I teach. Takes me about 1.5 hours to get everything in and set up. I've got recurves, longbows, selfbows, wood, carbon and aluminum arrows, Deadheads, Bear Razorheads, Ribteks, old compounds, new compounds, old treestands, new treestands, bow quivers without hoods, back quiver, side quivers, you name it, I bring it, I've even got an old Bear Greyling Tuxedo camo jacket. Some students have never held a traditional bow in their hands, and I'll give them a chance to shoot one if they'd like.
It's important that they have an understanding of the whole aspect of archery and not just what they see on TV. I take a lot of pride in my course, and Dr. Dave Samuels, one of the course's original founders has commented that I teach one of the best courses he's ever attended.

I was an instructor as well until Tennessee went to the online version. they said they would call me if they needed me. that was over 5 years ago. the only phone call I've had was to help do the archery section at a regular hunter's ed class.
