Is there anything I should know good or bad about Bear bows with fascor limbs? Any info would be great.

Here is my two cents worth. I'll probably be chastised by bear proponents. I have two bear takedown risers and two sets of limbs. For the price they charge they ain't pretty compared to other bows I have at a comparable price. The takedown system is beyond compare and I love the feel of the bow and the way it shoots. I guess I shouldn't tell a mother her baby is ugly.

Shortly after Bear started to pressure treat there riser woods with phenolic they began doing the same to there laminations and called them Fascor. Whether or not they were better is debatable, but it certainly didn't hurt anything.

The older limbs are much better looking. They all perform extremely well. You won't find a better shooting bow though there are faster. I am par is to the 68 & 69 year super Kodiaks.

The Fascor limb process supposedly started in 1969.... yet I have a '68 Super Kodiak with it. Apparently a LATE '68!

Catsailor, what's ugly about "Fascor" to you?
Other than the label on the face of the limbs, how can you tell?

It doesn't appear he was talking about Fascor. He isn't happy with the bow price.

The first year of that ugly Victor Fascor sticker was 1973. Not long after Victor Comptometer took over the company. The newest of the "old" Bears I have that used that particular limb process is a 1976 Super Kodiak. They were resin impregnated solid maple limb cores. The newer process(which I'm not sure they still use)..was/is cross laminate impregnated " plywood" type limb cores. I've always liked the smooth drawing, snappy shooting old Fascor limbs. All of my takedown limbs are also the old ones ...69-71 with the original Fascor process with Phenolic limb butts/ wedges. I feel they are STILL the best takedown limbs Bear has ever made!

Hah! I knew I'd get someone up in arms. The limbs for my takedowns are generic looking. There is nothing pretty about the limbs I bought. If I spend $800 for a bow of other makers they are much more aesthetic to the eye. I think that's evident to anyone who has other bows to compare with. My limbs are black with streaks showing through of a lighter color. One of my risers is blotchy. None of my other bows have that. Like I said. I love the takedown system and the way the bow shoots. That's enough to sell me on the product. My 59 Kodiak replica is another story. That bow is at the top of my bow rack. My Bear takedown is a tool. My 59er is a work of art. They both meet my requirements for the purpose intended.

Catsailor, beauty is in they eye of the beholder. I own and have owned some extremely beautiful bows with exotic woods and excellent craftsmanship. For some time now I've moved back to the older bows, many with black glass. The Bear takedown holds a special place in my heart, plain black glass and all. Just as my Brazilian Rosewood Howatts with their black glass does. They may look plain but they come from a time that I consider the golden age of recurves.
My go-to bow is a Bear Takedown. The bubinga model is one of the most beautiful ever made. I polished mine to a high gloss to make it look even better. This year I'll be hunting with a green stripe riser and a set of red-tipped older limbs with that generic looking black glass.

I have owned dozens of old Bear Grizzlys. This is just one man's opinion but the mid 1970's Super Grizzly - the only one with Fascor limbs - is/was the smoothest drawing of the 58" models I owned. I think there may have been something to the marketing behind Fascor limbs.
To counter that I have heard many folks who I respect quite a bit state there was no noticeable difference.

Fascor is simply Bear's version of actionwood. Laminated hardwood glued and cut edge wise. Just a different name. Been to the plant here many times and that is their story.

Been buying and selling over 5 years.....my go-to at the range has always been a Kodiak '69 Hunter.....after finding a S-Griz '76er at swat meet covered in brown paint and restoring to original beauty I can honestly say I've never shoot a smoother 58" bow.....This one's a keeper!

To some guys, beauty is in fancy, swirling grains and their minds can't fathom beauty with black glass on it. That's their issue though. 8^). I think the Bear takedowns are as aesthetically pleasing as any bow made, and you can indeed equate that to beautiful. Lots of beautiful vintage bows out there that are every bit as pleasing to the artistic eye as fancy customs.

A couple cans of camo paint will take care of the looks. And it'll still kill. Have 4 up to 75# (silvertip limbs) they're all camo.
