What would be a good starting brach height for a 45lb jay st charles thundbird bow

Initially adjust brace via more (or less) twists until bow sounds best when plucked like a guitar. IOW tune string for the quietest & lowest tone heard when string is twanged. Do this before any string silencers are installed. Then fling a few arrows to fine-tune the brace for best arrow flight. This advice applies to any bow & is the reason mfgs such as Damon Howatt did not publish brace heights for their bows.

Jay told me 6.25-6.5 for Dacron and 1/2 in lower for any FF type string. Whether you bought the bow new or used, I'm sure Jay would be happy to talk to you.

I have two Jay St. Charles Thunderbirds of recent birth straight from Jay. Each had a recommended brace height of 7 to 7.5 inches.

But, as mentioned above, a call to Jay will ensure that your particular bow's brace can be accurately established.

These are the only two recurves I own that don't require string silencing. I mentioned this to Jay, and he merely laughed and said, "Yeah, they're pretty quiet, aren't they?"

Have fun. That's one heck of an elegant bow to shoot.
