Hey guys, we just got in a couple of Lh 59's at 45lbs and two 50 lb Rh. These are not spoken for. We also have a 50lb LH, a 35lb and 30lb LH.

Plus 35 and 30 lb Rh. ALL 59'S ARE GLOSS AT THIS TIME BUT I HAVE MANY MORE BOWS ON ORDER!

Don't forget, we still have a couple two tone bubbinga/maple B risers and just got in another A riser...limbs too if needed.

thanks, bigjim

Enjoy my 40# ( actually 42# @ 28); thinking of another one as I thin the rest of the herd.

In a long career in archery, I've never been as disappointed in any bow as I have been in my Bear'59 Kodiak reproduction. The shoddy workmanship should embarass the maker. I regret falling for the hype.

You know, In the world of traditional archery, people are very reluctant to say bad things about custom bows. They don't want to hurt the individual out there trying to eek out a living even if they don't make what they claim. However, there seems to be no end to what coments flow freely about the Bears...of course one must take the good with the bad. Having said all that, this is the first I have ever heard of, and I have never seen a 59'er that I would say wasn't a work of art.

The 59 Bear repro would be my personal bow if I didn't make my own. My wife fell in love with a 30lb 59 er and I was nearly ostracized when I sold it....I was forced to purchase another for her :)

Here is my take on the Bear Kodiak. No surprises here. lol Also people keep referring to them as a reproduction and not a reintroduction. Big difference.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 25-Apr-14

I agree totally with what Big Jim said. Dan, I can't imagine why you have that opinion. My new 59 Kodiak is a true beauty and performer in every sense of that word. I haven't seen any better craftsmanship and I've been in this trad archery thing before it was "traditional" and have owned, seen, and shot countless bows custom and otherwise. In the last year I have bought three new Bear recurves--and I have been a longbow shooter for years. Bear is doing a great job and I say bravo for Bear Archery.

I have a buddy who says "some people would complain if you hung them with a brand new rope!". :o)

From: roger

If one has an issue with a current Bear product then simply return it and get another.....it's no big deal and virtually all the companies will do it for their customers. Just more bitchin for the sake of moanin.

From: Dan Jones
Date: 25-Apr-14

I'm reminded of Cornelius Vanderbilt's remark to the effect that "it never pays to kick a skunk." Or, apparently, a Bear.

From: kluzakd

Dan,

As Stickbender stated; "Can you elaborate"?

From: Dan Jones
Date: 25-Apr-14

OK, Stickbender; kluzakd: very visible tool marks in limb laminations, all 4 sides; tool marks at one riser fade; sticky, nuisance to remove glue bead on bow surface around all edges of leather grip; leather grip installed so right handed grip tends to push grip seam up; grip seam required re-gluing; feather rest inexplicably fell off requiring search of club grounds; all string nock area edges left very sharp, requiring softening; bow apparently hung by upper string nock to apply finish, rough, flaky overspray in that string groove required removal and repair; upper limb has 1 inch area where finish was scratched with horizontal lines, evidently by buffer; fine horizontal lines in finish on limbs, all 4 sides; string supplied useless; no warranty information included; no response to emails sent to Bear Customer Care.

In overall terms, I'd rate the quality of the workmanship of my '59 Kodiak "reintroduction" to be comparable to that of the Samick Sages that I've examined.

From: Sipsey River
Date: 25-Apr-14

Dan, no disrespect intended but I have picked up many of these bows and looked at them, shot several too. I have not seen any of what Dan describes. I guess there might be a bad apple in every bunch. Everyone I saw looked very nice. How could the string be useless? Too long, too short?

From: roger
Date: 25-Apr-14

Dan, all that said, why not just call them and talk to a real person and get the issue resolved?......I forget who it was here on the wall(Phil Magistro, maybe?) that had an issue with a new '59er and got the issue rectified promptly. I've sent emails to other companies over the years that didn't get answered, but I've yet to have a service/sale/warranty issue go unresolved by talking to someone........but whatever.

From: Yunwiya
Date: 25-Apr-14

The string was not stringy enough, the wood was too woody, and the leather was over-tanned on the outside and under-tanned on the inside.

Then the feathers! Oh Lordy the feathers! They were so feathery that my arrows were embarrassed and refused to leave my quiver.

From: fdp
Date: 25-Apr-14

Well guys....you asked what he found wrong and he gave you a whole list. All of the things sound valid to me. Now, that being said, I would return it if I were him.

From: Yunwiya
Date: 25-Apr-14

Well, returning it opens up a whole new can of worms.

The post office counter is dusty, there are visible streaks on the windows, 11 wrinkles were observed on the forehead of the women behind the counter, the tape used to repackage boxes was missing 1/4" of adhesive, the parking lot had 3 cars incorrectly lined up in parking spaces, exhaust fumes from postal vehicles emitting 5.2% more emissions than specified on the owner's manual, lighting was measured and it seems that 8 of the 100 watt bulbs were only producing 98.5 watts, the clock on wall was 43 seconds off, and the waxed floor was missing 3mm of wax on 7 floor tiles near the north wall.

Not to be picky, but ....

Just saw and handled a bunch at Whittingham. First new ones I've seen in person. They were MUCH nicer than I expected!!! Finish was flawless on the ones I saw. I honestly thought that they would be a cheesy cookie-cutter repro, but they look absolutely outstanding! IMHO

From: KyPhil
Date: 26-Apr-14

I saw some that Jim had at the Tradfest. I had never laid eyes on one before but I will say they were beautiful bows and fit finish looked great. Jim is also top notch to deal with.

From: fdp
Date: 26-Apr-14

Some of you guys are hilarious. It KILLS you to admit the fact that Bear Archery could let a bow get of the factory that is a piece of dookey. That in and of itself shows you ain't been around much.

ANYBODY who has been hangin' around this stuff any length of time has seen examples of an 'oops. or more than one example. Even Jim...he wasn't born yesterday. And yeah....I grew up in it so I've seen more than many.

I've seen it with Bear (owned one that was an oops in the '80's, and they WOULD NOT replace it at that time by the way. I've seen them from Martin, Hoyt, Black Widow, and virtually everybody else. That doesn't mean they are all bad, but that one was. Don't ridicule the man for giving you his opinion based on HIS experience.

From: roger
Date: 26-Apr-14

fdp, no one's ridiculing Dan. What we're trying to explain to him is that others have had issues with a Bear product lately and they got the issue(s) quickly remediated. Bear Archery has gone through a number of ownership/management changes over the decades, but currently they appear to have stepped up customer service. I've witnessed blemished bows with virtually all of the major manu's over the years. Additionally, no one's stated that a Bear bow will never leave the factory at less than 100%, only that the reintro bows all in all have been top notch quality and there aren't any widespread issues. I just don't understand folks who always seem to have issues with companies and people when the real problem is likely poor communication.

Sure, I have seen issues too, just hadn't seen one on the 59'er to date. Bear has taken care of every viable issue that has come across my desk...If I had a desk.

I will agree that their strings are poor unless you use wood arrows and then they are ok...will work. The warranty information not being present is possibly my fault however there is no card to fill out, just statement of warranty.

I don't get a chance to examine all new bows that I get (we sell a large amount of Bear bows), but have a return policy if the customer isn't happy. I have offered to try to help with this bow.

Jim and Roger...not directed at you at all. There were some comments however that are a little on the "talk downish" side.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 26-Apr-14

My new string that came with the bow works fine! I'm shooting carbons and woods both.

From: Yunwiya
Date: 26-Apr-14

Telling Jim that the Bear Archery bows he sells are a "piece of dookey" is not "talking downish." It is malicious!

It sounds like buyer's remorse after the warm fuzzy "new bow" feeling wore off.

Just man up and ask for a refund, or think before you buy. No need to look for fly specks on the finish.
