How are folks liking the new Bear T/D ? Quality compard to old, performance, stability, craftsmanship.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 21-Apr-14

I love mine. Quality is top notch, shoots hard and fast, and craftsmanship is superb. I have the two tone riser and #1 limbs. Never had one of the old ones so can't compare. This bow shoots as good as any custom I have ever had.

I'll second what David said. I have the bubinga model (B-riser w/ #3 limbs for my long draw) and have no complaints. The fit and finish is excellent, very smooth drawing and quiet. I also love the history of the bow. I have never had an one of the older wood risers, so I can not compare it to those particular models. I have had several, and currently own, a magnesium B-riser. Even though they are two different materials (wood vs. magnesium, I really like them both and wouldn't want to have to choose between the two. I'm sure there may be faster and more exotic bows out there, but for me the Bear Takedown represents the best--performance; clean, classic design; and a wonderful history.

Bear is on the right track in my opinion. My new TD is all it should be and more.

I am still patiently waiting for mine. I ordered the two tone, A handle with #1 limbs back in January. Really looking forward to it. Mind you I was shooting my old faithful 55lb Grizzly this evening and it makes me wonder why I even bother shooting any other bow. I guess you could say I want a little bit of that history too.

I wish I had one of the new ones also wish Bear would start making the TD magnesium risers again...

I vote for a machined aluminum riser. I love the mags but times have changed. A machine aluminum would be great.

I just recently got the 2014, 2 tone B riser. I polished it out to match a gloss finished set of Rose Oak limbs. The finish is not as well done as my Green Stripe riser. If you keep it satin it will hide the imperfections but if it is glossed you'll see it is not to the same standard. It is a bit heavier in mass weight and adds to what is already a very stable platform, I like this. The grip on the Greenstripe is narrower in the throat, in fact the whole grip area is svelte compared to the 2 tone. Don't get me wrong the new TD is not fat or thick just a bit more in the throat and palm swell. I shoot the Greenie better, but this one is growing on me so the jury's still out. Lol sandpaper is cheap;^) The limbs of the new TD, I cannot comment on as I bought this riser for the Rose Oak's. I did have a set of the newer red tips with an A Mag that I traded away, IIRC they shot very well as expected but nothing extraordinary.

I'm not sure what folks are comparing Bear limbs performance to. Performance is more than speed if that is the thought. Consistency is key in the performance formula, along with stability.

In 1969 standard Bear target limbs, attached to a C-wood riser shot two perfect rounds...back to back 300's at Cobo Hall in Detroit. Then Vic Berger completed his rounds with a 299 out of 300 on the last round, for a remarkable 899 out of 900. That was done shooting with fingers in the freestyle division. I'm not sure what more a person could ask from a bow. It's only a Bear if it has Bear limbs with the Bear riser, and there is no one here than can get the performance out of those limbs that is already there.

George, not sure if you were alluding to my mention of Rose Oak limbs. First let me say I agree with you 100%. I failed to mention my Green Striper is with the stock green tip limbs. I was comparing risers and made no mention of the performance of the Rose Oaks. I do shoot better with the green stripe with B50 string when comparing both risers with the Bear green tip limbs. Sorry just realized I didnt word my previous post to reflect an apples to apples comparison. But yes I agree with your definition of a Bear TD.

Lots of folks using aftermarket limbs with the Bears, Aerofish. Not just referring to your post. I have heard folks say they do it for better performance, and I just shake my head. I know Brandon makes beautiful limbs...and even made risers for them at one time. I have much respect for Brandon's bows and the man himself.

From: Ryman Cat

George do you have any of these new TD's from the past 3 years? Have you shot any of them or compaired aftermarket limbs on any of these as well or do you have any of the aftermarket limbs you have shot on a regulair basis?

If not then how do you qualify to comment on the Bear characteristics verses any aftermarket limbs that are out there unless you have any of them? I hope your not basing anything on some old study with limbs that aren't like the new Borders for example.

I don't get that the Hosegal was interested in aftermarket limbs you posted that information and opinion?

I never shot the early TD's other than the Mags had a few of them. Never had any early TD risers before the 90's personally yet either. I have the last 3 years of Bears risers and shot them against all my aftermarket limbs and the Bear limbs I have a number of sets.

Yes Brandons are gorgious AM limbs but I won't say they are blinding fast over the Bear TD's though. With the SDB strings maybe a tad faster but the custom look far surppases everything and well worth the money as well.

RER are fast and over Bear TD's and the Border limbs are so advanced they are scary. A pain to string and werd to look at as well.

The Bear limbs can be strung with FF and skinny strings to increase the performance a great deal as well.

As far as the new craftsmanship as equal or even beter than the early or lates. Performance wise all that you need or could ever measure and want. The aftermarket limbs just add another dimension to things with custom as well as performance depending on just whose aftermarket parts you have on the bow with limbs or strings.

Hope this sheds another perspective on how the new Bears TD's compair.

Can't go wrong with A Bear TD.

I have several of the older Bear take downs, both A & B risers. I also have several of the new takedowns. I have picked up both an A and a B riser with limbs for each of the last three versions that have come out... the black diamondwood, the Bubinga and the gray future wood. I also have a new two toned riser on order. I like them all!!!

That being said, there is a world of difference between shooting one of my older bows with squared off limb tips and Dacron strings verses one of the newer bows and fast flite. I don't have a set of Rose Oak or Border limbs but running the newer limbs through the chronograph, they hold their own against most of the custom bows out there.

The fit and finish of my newer bows is outstanding and it seems each newer version I get turns out better. I like my old gray and brown bows and my green stripe, but if I could only have one Bear takedown, I would opt for one of the new production bows.

Ordered mine Feb. 12th. B riser, #1 limbs, 45#. Grey with red tips. Still waiting!

Maybe some more should have responded to Big Jim when he had the call out who wants them I have some Bear TD's in now and could have beat that long wait. Big Jim is the go to for me.

The custom limbs are all totally by themselves and not needed only desired if you wanted to customize or hot rod your Bear risers to put it another way thats all.LOL

I even have had FF skinny padded looped strings made for the various aftermarket limbs. I have to keep things in perspective with the hot rodding persay and depending on which riser I wanted to shoot them on.LOL

Ryman Cat, it's not what I said, it's your comprehension of what I said. I really don't care what people buy, but their idea of performance is usually one-sided and all about speed. I don't care what limb you put on them, but if it's not a Bear limb it's not a Bear bow. That was not directed at the original poster and was directed at those who think Bear bows don't perform well or are somehow inferior. Most, if not all, will never attain the ability to realize the difference between the Bear and aftermarket limbs as far as function goes.

I just ordered a Bear "B" T/D 2 tone Riser from Big Jim's, as well as #65 & #50 limbs. I couldn't wait any longer, after seeing RymanCat's picture yesterday. Already shipped out too! I should have it in a few days. :)

Make no mistake anyone the Bear limbs are all performers. Only reason I have so many limbs and aftermarkets is because I need my head examined?LOL

I wanted to try them thought about selling the Border and RER but never the Rose Oaks unless I am broke because they are so beautiful. I even thought about covering a set with snake skins on one set. Like I don't have anything better to spend money on.LOL

If you can get your hands on one I would. If I din't spend so much money of other custom bows I could have bought a few early bear TD's that's what I want to get next. I been waiting for better prices but thats like waiting for the cows to come home maybe. I just figured sooner or latter a early reasonable Bear TD Type I or II will come available to me and I will get it.

My two tone B Riser and 2 sets of limbs arrived yesterday from Big Jim's. Wow!!! I'll load pics later. Incredible. I never thought I would find a bow that shoots better than my 1968 Kodiak Hunter. This T/D with #65 limbs... just shoots where I look and is dead in the hand. shoots a heavy arrow VERY fast. Beautiful fit and finish, limbs fit perfect. The #65 limbs draw so smooth, that the #50 limbs are still in the plastic and may stay there for awhile. Unlike many, I like the compass. Bear has done a great job with this 2 tone T/D. I am much happier with this classic design than with the BW I briefly owned last year. Thanks Big Jim & BEAR!!!!!!

I sure love mine. Had it at our club shoot today and a right handed buddy had to take it around the range and shoot it (it's a left handed bow). Shot it pretty well too. He is on Big Jim's list for one and can't wait to get it. Thought I would have to pry it out of his hands. :o)
