No to flu flus. Broadheads if on the ground or not over head high where I can get my arrow and broadhead back. I use Hex heads if not a broadhead. Squirrel season here opens Aug. 15.

From: JustSomeDude
Date: 21-Apr-14

Our spring squirrel opens on may 10 which is also the last two days of Turkey season. Test shoot a Broadhead into a tree and you'll likely decide not to use broadheads for squirrel unless they are on the ground.

I carry Judos and a couple of broadheads. Will be interesting to see where the squirrels are early in the season. Sometimes they are mostly 50-80' up and you have to catch them on the ground

Always good to have a couple flu-flu's with you for when they're flattened against a branch, thinking they're hiding. I've never had any luck with flu's when they're on the ground or in scurry mode in the trees. Too noisy & too slow. Most of the time they're gone before the arrow gets to them with regular fletching. I've missed 'em & had them smile & give me the finger. Quick little buggers. That's around my house, yours may be different. I usually use hex blunts, especially if I have my dog with me. Have had them bounce off with less than perfect hits. I get lucky once in a while.

Being an avid squirrel/rabbit hunter I find that squirrels can be more difficult to get penetration with blunts than rabbits, particularly when shooting lighter weight bows or at the longer ranges. These work great. I think I bought them from 3 Rivers about 10 years ago. The bottom has the edges cut and twisted to produced both shock and bleeding.

Mating season for eastern gray squirrels actually takes place twice a year, from December-February, then again from June-August (or a little later for northern regions). I would suspect that by the 15 May young are about on there own.

From: dm/wolfskin
Date: 24-Apr-14

That's how you control the population. I've killed deer, hogs and squirrels with babies inside them. Just the way it is. You can look at it another way to. If you kill a female animal that is not pregnant, she probably would be in time if you hadn't killed her.

Zbone, in VA the Spring squirrel season is two weeks mid June. At that time the first litter are weaned and the second not yet concieved (or if so only by a few days). No real impact on the squirrel population.

Also squirrel and other small rodents are a "R-selected species" ...in effect predation has practically no impact on an R Selected species' numbers.

Their reproductive capacity is so high that only environmental stress factors (food/nutrition, cold/heat stress, cover, water, etc) can offset it.

Those putting exact breeding dates for squirrel, all I can say is I have a squirrel nextbox an white oak tree 15 paces from my door to the deck, and at no time are there not a litter of baby grey/black squirrels in that nestbox from April through September. Litter after litter, one grows and gone, another begins... There are at least 2 litters a year in that box, sometimes 3....

We squirrel hunt almost totally on public hunting land. Maybe we can get a group together this winter and hunt Kaw Lake. I haven't squirrel hunted that area but it would be about the same distance for both of us to drive.

From: Fuzzy
Date: 25-Apr-14

Zbone, no one is forcing you to kill your pet squirrels :-) 2-(or even 3) litters a year and with young weaned at 30-days of age still leaves you time for both a spring and fall squirrel season.... we aren't pinpointing exact pupping-dates, we are saying that a mid-spring squirrel season is well within sound conservation parameters...

It's a grey. Its tail has the normal color to it. I did see it the next year once but I never thought about shooting it. Too many regular phases around. From: Fuzzy

SB, go back up the thread and read. Spring Squirrel season is as biologically and ethically sound, an idea as spring turkey season.

From: SB
Date: 01-May-14

This time of year around here they are having thier young! Or have very young still in the nest. Wouldn't be biological OR ethical to me! Plus we don't have hardly any squirrels anymore compared to the 70's and 80's. You can spend days in a tree stand and hardly ever see one anymore. Used to be all over the place! I quit hunting them years ago for that very reason.

OUr seasons in the fall so we got plenty of natural bait. Just go sit next to a hickory and you'll be overrun. If theres no hickorys close by then sit by an oak.

I just use hex heads or steel blunts. Back as a kid I used to drill two holes in a steel blunt perpendicular to each other and drive nails thru them. Then clip off the nails so about half inch or so stuck out all the way around.

From: sir misalots
Date: 14-May-14

A couple years ago my buddy shot a squirrel facing him right in the chest. 4 blade pinned him to the tree. Squirrel got upset, chewed on the arrow , got the arrow unstuck from the tree, and ran up the tree with the arrow. Found the arrow under the oak the next day. Never found the squirrel.

If they weighed 100 lbs I wouldnt walk in the woods.

I've enjoyed this thread. Brings back memories of me and my Dad squirrel hunting in May in the hills north and east of Tahlequah. That area was big red oak ridges and the squirrels were thick. They drove me crazy during deer season so I was more than happy to thin them out. An area I routinely hunted had a big mulberry tree growing in a little clearing. If the tree had fruit, it seemed every squirrel in the county would come it. We never did bow hunt for them though. Always used our Ruger 10/22s. If you can find a mulberry tree you need to set up on it. When my Dad had his 20 acres around Adair I used to bow hunt for squirrels along the creek that ran through his property. The hickories where the ticket if they had a good crop of nuts. If not, then the oaks and black walnuts were good trees to set up around. I killed several and missed a bunch. It was fun stalking them and trying to get really close. I love squirrel hunting and do a little bit in the fall behind my house.

Someone mentioned recipes for squirrel. Well, my Mom would pressure cook them. She would roll them in seasoned flour, brown in olive oil and pressure cook them. Pressure cooking would make the oldest, toughest boar squirrel fall-off-the-bone tender. It was messy eating but good. Serve them with some sweet taters, or black eyed peas and collard greens and you got some real soul food! Since I don't have a pressure cooker I do the same thing only in a crock pot. Takes longer to cook but they are tasty. I also like the looks of what dm/wolfskin made. Looks kinda like Brunswick stew.

yes, I second the quick time in the pressure cooker followed by frying. Normally once the pressure cooker starts rocking allow 3 minutes and shut down heat.

Then flour and fry (I prefer deep fryer)

Makes the toughest meat as tender as the best cut of meat. Great for rabbit also

You can substitute the water for beer for a different taste. But I like the "meat" taste.

Like I said par cook in PC first,Then flour , salt and pepper and fry. Yum! Hunting them with a bow is great fun, but you wont get fat off them. If you want a mess of them for eating go with the 22 rifle. For fun use the bow.

Toehead, That's a nice basket of bluegills. Bluegills are the best tasting fresh water fish, I don't care what anyone says. When I lived in Southeast Louisiana we caught giant 'gills in the Pearl River system. We used flyrods and had a blast. We would only keep them if they were big enough to fillet which was about 8" long. It wasn't anything to keep 100 a day. You won't find any better eating than deep fried bluegills.

dm/wolfskin,

That looks good. Can I come over and eat? I'll bring some good French bread and several bottles of wine. I've had squirrel and rabbit done "Cajun Style" and it is fine eatin'. My Cajun buddies called it "rice-n-gravy". They did them up in a giant cast iron pot. Stewed them all day in spices, onions and bell peppers but no tomatoes. It came out really dark looking. It's an old traditional Cajun recipe. Ladle it over rice and eat until you bust. Serve with some good mustard greens and a good wine its fit for a king.

This is getting a little fishy. Back to the squirrels. This is a South Carolina low country squirrel that thought I was only pig hunting. His mistake.
