I just received a Blackout Excel Bow from Lancasters Archery that John Wert set up, and all I can say is AEWSOME! If you have not shot one you should. I was shooting black max limbs, both glass and wood and glass, wood and carbon.

I have been shooting an Excel for about three years. For the money it might be the best value out there. I have both the 21" and the 23" risers. I changed the grips to a Jager grip which I like better than the standard Hoyt grip.

Does lancasters carry that grip?

cheapest best bow out there. When set up properly it will out perform any high or low end bow out there. Only problem is it's not a good looking custom wood bow. It's a great hunting bow.

I have a couple good bang for the buck, one with bm 55# shorts is my go to fishing bow and the other wears bm 40# mediums for a light weight target rig.

It's my 3D rig and when tuned they are great shooters.

I actually love the way mine looks(blackout riser, TT Blackmax limbs). And yes, they are extremely good bows. I won't be buying another bow for awhile. Speck

Nice risers. Wish I still had mine.

Lancaster sells grips but the one I use is from Jager. I have to warn you to try one before you buy one. Mine is the "Best" model and most describe it as a left hand grip on a right hand bow. It is different.

K Cummings, This bow is for fun and I had it put together work on form. My setup was 25# limbs and 700 spine carbon Express Medallion's left full length with 80 grain points. I was able, by the end of the first shooting session to shoot bull's-eyes at will at 20 yards. The arrows weighed 280 grains total, flew perfect shooting off the shelf with felt chair pads for an arrow rest, seemed fairly fast, and I will try and chronograph them this week.

dh51,

You don't feel like you're out of power with a 25# limb?

I normally shoot a 600 wt. arrow, so I am playing with a set of 34# LIMBS. I use a blacked out 21" riser. I'm tryin to hit that sweet spot between 28 and 34#.

Yeah, I can tell you the the SF Axiom 23: is pretty sweet, too.

I keep thinking that the Excel is gonna get short limbs to stay at 62".

I luv this stuff.

I purchased a Blackout Excel riser back in February and paired it with 50# short Blackmax limbs after reading so many good reviews on this forum as well as others. I have not been disappointed. I was a little hesitant because I like to shoot off the shelf and the Excel has a flat shelf but I figured I could make a radiused shelf out of a piece of wood or stick a matchstick under the rug rest. As it turned out I didn't have to do anything. I am just using furniture pads on both the shelf and sight window and am getting great flight using a 2016 with 175 grain field points.

""You don't feel like you're out of power with a 25# limb?"""

Just FYI, Sandy Elott, using a 24# Black Widow HT-1225, shot a 500 on a standard field round in the late 1960's. That was on targets from 20 feet to 80 yards...112 total arrows over 28 targets. Many folks would do themselves well by using light limbs to build their form...and that is what deerhunter51 was doing.

I think many would be pleasantly surprised how the lighter bows shoot when tuned and balanced properly. Of course you have to get away from the manly bow mindset first. Most mens target bows back in the 60's and early 70's were in the mid to upper 30# range for field and target shooting.

My Excel is only 30#s. About 253 fps. Still shoots great.

From: roger
Date: 19-Apr-14

Sipsey, sure about that?.....lol ;^)

The Excel riser makes for a fantastic bow. I have one and a number of hunting weight limbs that all shoot great off it. The guys over on Archery Talk are mating the Excel with SF Axiom+ limbs and for $80 they are getting tremendous results with them.....Lancaster can hardly keep them in stock and for $5 in a can of spray paint you now have a hunting bow too. If we've proven anything it's that accuracy and performance can be had on the cheap really.

I shot some 3D yesterday and shot from the close positions, so 20 to 25 yards I would guess. Anyway, this Excel flat out shoots. I can really tell that even with just a couple shooting sessions the form work is paying off. I am concentrating on form rather then worrying about where the arrow is going to hit, and guess what, I almost ruined arrows cause I was stacking them together on those 3D targets! My draw is defiantly increased about an inch, so I am getting a full 28", the arrows zip pretty good even with 25# limbs.

From: Sipsey River

I am shooting 30#, 330 grain, about 11 grains per pound. 253fps is not to bad for 11 gr/lb.

John, do you mean 153fps?

I have the same set up as stickbow37 I have tried to trade it 2 or 3 times and everytime I am glad it didn't trade. It really shoots. Have a good EASTER. cbc

See, I get a ton of stuff from this.

I like light limbs. My wife has a 26# Blackhawk Scorpion. I love that thing. I play with ILF a lot these days, and the thing I see is that the ILF rig seems to shoot flatter than other bows I have or have tried. I'm sure it's probably more perception om my part, but I know I'm impressed by that.

My 40# rig hits like a hammer. That's basically what I use all the time. I've only recently started dropping down in weight. I'm trying to hit a target weight around 34# with the Excel, but at around a 62" bow. That Axiom riser, which is also a very sweet rig, has turned into my big bow.

This is too much fun.

Love my excel riser. Matched with long limbs makes for a butter smooth 66" 45#@29" bow that is a pleasure to shoot all day long. The riser is pretty light and a little top heavy to me. I add 10-12oz of weight in the stab and it balances perfectly.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Folks today have to learn all over again what most of use have known or done forty couple years ago. A short stabilizer can turn a very good bow into a great shooting bow.

From: deerhunt51
Date: 21-Apr-14

Shot the Excel with TradTech 25# limbs across the chronograph today. With 280 grain arrows, I was getting 155 fps, with 300 grain arrows 150 fps, with 350 grain arrows 142fps. Very consistent readings, with 3fps extreme spread or less. I think that with a skinny string that last figure with the heavy arrow will reach 145 fps easy as that nock was tight. Not to bad really.

K Cummings, Thanks for the information.

Kevin, at 50# mine shoots fantastic. 55# is another story.

"Sorry, 153, not 253, I am showing my age!"

I was getting ready to throw the BS flag.

From: Sipsey River

That is not the first time I have made that same mistake. Something inside me must be pushing to more speed. I really do not care about speed but I keep making that same mistake! I guess it is just old age creeping in!
