Since I truly value the Icons of archery,(my god this is gonna be expensive),I would like to acquire one each of LARRY HATFIELD designed Martin bows,or at least the ones he had a hand in.I have an idea an African safari will be cheaper, but the bows will more challenging. All I need is the list from MR. HATFIELD, lots of cash and even more time, and (gulp) I'll get started. Please,Please, Please say the SAVANNAH is one of yours, as I'm already started.

every traditional bow made by howatt archery from 1964 until 1976 and every howatt/martin bow made by the howatt shop from 1976 until 2012. thats a fair number of models!!! i'll have to think about the list for a while.

I have had this as a wish for quite awhile. Not owning them all, but just having the complete list. BTW that lefty Hi-Speed that just came up on the big auction site? Hands Off! Its mine!

well, to start, coronado, balboa, ventura, hunter after 1965,54"-58" hi-speed, hatfield take down, super diablo after 1963, dream catcher(it is a separate bow), limbs for the warthog and cougar compound bows, ml-17, vision, savannah, bamboo viper, venom, and the limbs for this golden oldie. should keep you busy for a while!

From: Stumpkiller
Date: 24-Feb-14

Phew! That's a fine stable indeed.

I used a 35# Damon Howatt Ventura in college (the school's - not mine) and I loved that bow. Was that one of yours?

Though I confess I had a single pin sight on that bow. What a tack driver.

Ummm...Coronado, Bandito, Century 21, Chinook, etc. too?

From: doug

wasn't there a night hawk also?

From: Buzz
Date: 25-Feb-14

To add......

Catalina, Diablo, Monteray, Vigilante?

That is gonna be a big list alright.

From: larryhatfield
Date: 25-Feb-14

i confess to the bandito, chinook and vigilante but the catalina, century 21, and the original diablo were by the man himself, damon howatt!! there was a nighthawk, but it was a take-off of the hunter. i listed the coronado above. there were some special bows made with yew from england, mammoth tusk, etc., but they were not separate bows. just different woods. trying to remember more 62" bows. there were some.

Having mr hatfield on here for all things martin info is just awesome! You've no doubt forgotten more than most of us will learn lol! I have a hunter and a savannah so I guess I've got some real work ahead of me lol!

I guess a Dreamcatcher will be next as it is probably the most available now, will keep an eye out for others in the mean time. Thank you MR. HATFIELD for your reply, as well as everyone else.

Any of these Larry?

- Saber - Gail Martin Signature Recurve - X-200 - Serengeti

Thanks! Dean

all of them, dean.

I have a 52" Rebel I got from 3Rivers for half price when they dumped their stock of them - probably around 2011.

Just wondering where these bows fit into the Martin scheme.

Thanks.

(PS. I got a new 66" Venom in 2010 before it disappeared from the catalog, and it is indeed a wondrous bow to shoot.)

Larry,

Can you tell us a little more about the El Dorado T/D in the picture that you posted? Those are pretty unique looking limbs and riser! Did it draw and perform well? The limbs remind me of the "New" design by Black Swan.

Thanks! Dean

"Imagineered" LOL love that Mr Hatfield.

From: larryhatfield

the eldorado t.d. was way ahead of it's time. it was possible to adjust the arrow rest block to get a perfect centershot with any diameter arrow shaft. it was also a very fast bow. it was bannes by fita, the international organization that is now world archery, on the grounds that the grip was not an integral part of the riser. (it bolted on). when the possibility of international sales disappeared we quit making them. i wish i had made one to keep!

From: larryhatfield
Date: 26-Feb-14

seneca archer, didn't know what other term to use!! basically, the first one did was a maple block 2" thick, 5" wide, and i forget the length, with the take offs marked out. i cut and ground the take-offs and then drew for a while on the block. then i band sawed some guide lines and shaped the riser on a machine i built that used a 2"X 120" sanding belt, mounted vertically. basically high speed wood carving, free hand. i had a short round rod, 1/2" diameter that the belt rubbed against and 10" below that a flat plate 2 1/2" wideX 4" high. did most of the work between blocks and using the round surface. thats how i could cut 3-d curves etc. quickly and accurately. again, all free hand.

From: Frisky

I remember when it first came out. I considered it the most beautiful and futuristic target bow!

That Mr. Hatfield is just intense...I am always stupefied by the level of craftsmanship some folks can get and make it look effortless. I love those old howatt bows..I got one a few months the ago that has a grip unlike any other I have seen on a howatt. Haven't had a lot of time to string it up and shoot..maybe I will have to cull a couple of hours very soon.

From: yorktown5

I did it! I snagged that #50 lefty '71 54" Hi-Speed of e-Bay tonight.

I'll keep us posted.

Lets see, I've had a Ventura, two Hunters and a 62" Monterey, a Coronado, my Super-D, a Balboa and 2 Mamba's and now a Hi-Speed. Hands on time with plenty of other fixer-uppers too.

A Hatfield Slam? How about a "slamette" or a serial slammer?

Do I get like a pin or something if I am the only person with a Damon Howatt logo ( thanks Dave S.) on my vehicle's tailgate?

Rick

you guys are way past me!!! i have three longbows, one recurve, and one 64",45# howatt rocket semi recurve from the mid fifties. all the longbows are venoms.

"all the longbows are VENOMS"..Mr.Hatfield what is it about the venom longbow that you prefer them to the SAVANNA or VIPER,just wondering, since I've never seen a VIPER OR VENOM.But I do have a SAVANNA.

From: larryhatfield
Date: 28-Feb-14

the venom is 66" long vs. 64" for the viper. it's faster and draws easier. the draw curve is a straight line. zero stack for the first 30" and a slight decrease at 31".

I'm fortunate to have a 1974 Super Diablo that Larry made. Here's Larry's response to my post regarding my new to me Howatt.....

"It is a 1974. unusual to have the 01 bow! usually one of the martins got that one. looks to be in good shape. please use a dacron string. from the look of the nocks, tips, and the grip area, i am the guilty bowyer that tipped out and shaped your bow. there were only two of us doing the shaping back then and the other fellow had a different look on his tips. he also shaped the riser a bit differently. the brace on that bow should be somewhere around 7 1/2" from the deepest part of the grip. hope you get years of use from the bow!"

I just purchased a Howatt Ventura from my neighbor. I think it is the prettiest bow I have seen and it shoots as good as it looks. It is 37# @ 28". The serial number is 3200-66". I wonder if anyone can tellook me the year it was made, and who the bowyer may have been?

From: Jay B
Date: 05-Aug-15

Great thread, my Dreamcatcher was the prettiest, and one of the best shooters I've owned. I was sorry to see it go, but it was too heavy for my tendinitis. The X- 200 was my first real recurve, great shooter too!!
