There's been a mystery behind this bow for years. My dad got it from a gentleman in his 80's about 12 years ago. The man told my dad it was a Mosshorn Longbow. He said it originally was 53#@28". He never knew the bowyer's name but said he was from the north Midwest and claimed this bow to be one of three made like it. He said it's Elk ivory tips. The bow has no writing on it. Nothing at all. Anyone know anything about it? My dad and I have been asking around and trying to research it for a decade with no results.

Multi layered lamination.

A guy names Wes Martin used to make those. They were affordable and could be great bows. Some people said the finish left a little to be desired.

Nice looking bow, how does it shoot?

It shoots great. I hunted with it a few years in the Adirondacks when I lived up there but never scored. I don't think it's drawing 53# and it definitely likes a lighter spined arrow. It's real smooth. It does have like a wavy sloppy hand shock. It's hard to explain. It's not the normal jolting quick hand shock it's more like one slow pulse after the arrow is gone and it recovers. Does that make sense? We've never put any fur or anything else on the string to see if that would fix it. It's super quiet and doesn't need silencers.

Wes Martin.A Shrew copy.First one I saw was given to Lance Coleman when he and TG started tradgang ~2002.Problems with finish, detail, and warranty work but the shrew design was a shooter.

I had one and liked it it was very quiet and shot fast...but it was a little rough on the finish. I spoke to Wes Martin when I bought it and he was very pleasant to talk to and very knowledgeable about bows and their making. He was down in Alabama at the time. I always wondered what happened to him.

Have one for bow fishing, the finish is rough but it shoots good.

I had Wes make me one back in December '03. Talked to Wes on the phone for about one month before I ordered my bow. He did tell me staight up that his bows don't have the finish that more well-known bows have but Mosshorn bows are functional. He was right. My bow was smooth in the finish but there were no rough edges on the sides of the limbs. I've always shot at least 600 grains of arrow weight so I've never had any hand shock. Yeah I'd like to know what happened to Wes. The last time I talked with him he was getting married and he lived next to Auburn.

Owned one and it shot great, but like everyone else said, the finish left a lot to be desired.

I don't know what happened to him. I just know he did not do me and some others right but could build a bow when he wanted to

Like a lot of other people that used to be on here, I believe Wes got run off. He sold a decent bow at a cheap price and some guys expected perfection regardless of the price. It only takes a few mean spirited pm's to turn away some people.

I got bows that were cracked sorry I really did expect to shoot them and he would do nothing about it

I just purchased one. Shoots great with little to no hand shock. The finish was taken off by previous owner.

I guess the answers to most of your questions have been answered. Wes was just a kid when he was making the Mosshorn bows. He still makes a few selfbows. He lives in the south, Alabama. He's a nice guy and if you are still shooting the bow then he did a pretty good job on it.

I owned one of the very first Mosshorns. I got to know Wes pretty well. He was young but he did make a nice shooting bow. They were rough ecsp at first but again he new how to tiller and they were quick and quiet. I ended up owning 3 over about an 8 month period and each one got a little better as far as fit and finish. I believe he basically traced a super Shrew and then built a form. He was beaten up on the net pretty bad by some folks even I took a few shots at him(the first bow he sent me the finish work was real rough) but I always liked the guy!! Shawn

I have one and the finish is rough but very shootable. Got a client shooting it with severe physical disabilities and he sold his x-bow do to the enjoyment he got from it. Still use it for a occasional bow fishing.
