My Wife is getting stationed in San Juan Puerto Rico and the Base doesn't have a archery range. Couldn't find any info on the Internet. Does any one know if here is any place to shoot. Already not happy that they don't want me bringing my guns with me.

I would think the Ft. Buchanan fitness center could get targets to start up a club with MWR funds. Otherwise check out the local sports centers or university clubs.

Another alternative might be to look into archery-golf...there's quite a few golf courses in the San Juan area.

Worst case scenario I start fishing again. I have a few small targets I can ship with my bow.

You might see if you can get hold of John Vasos, "Chessbum" and see if he can give you any pointers on approaching the chain of command to get an archery club started. You don't want to step on anyone's toes on a military base. If someone perceives that they were left out of the loop they might get their shorts in a knot and shut your club down before it gets going good. Good luck with it.

When I tried different searches onkine I found references to some FITA shoot...so keep on the lookout while down there. Somebody may know somebody kind of situation.

Do you have more than one bow you could ship there? It might help if you had a bow to lend to people who maybe haven't shot before. You might get some new shooters going that way.

That's a fita/olympic type facilty there - maybe you can join and use the range? (I can't read Spanish to figure it out.)

I will check out the site. Luckily my Wife is fluent in Spanish. I am going to take my takedown recurve for easy travel. Heard there is a Island nearby with goats and pigs. Got to hunt something.

Watch your step, mucho crima alli, y pelegroso.

Take the opportunity to learn Spanish. It is quickly becoming the second language of the U.S..

Buen cazando, amigo.

The island is called Mona Island. There are a couple of articles in TBM about hunting there and one about hunting on Barbados. Hope you have good luck. I would love to hear about the bowfishing there if you think about it. Oh, take your shot gun, there is a pigeon/dove and Duck season on Puerto Rico. Maybe you'll get a chance at one of the cool little pintails down there...

Hey kids! Im a traditional archer (recurve and crossbow). I play in the SCA (atlantia.sca.org), and recently moved here. I am looking for a place to practice. I am awaiting info from the FETA field people. Apparently it is usually open on Tuesdays. Anyone had success in finding a more laid back solution that is open whenever?

Thanks all! Robert Huttinger (SCA: Cameron de Grey)

I haven't seen anywhere to shoot. I shoot in the backyard one in a whille. If You speak Spanish you may be able to talk to a Local out in the country about Shooting your bow. Not a lot of open space for shooting in the cities.

Coincidently I met a guy at a party last weekend who is a retired NYC PO. We hit it off pretty good, initially talking about firearms. I happen to mention I also shoot a bow. Now because he had already told me he had a ranch on Puerto Rico, he interjected... "do you know you are not allowed to own a bow and arrow or shotgun on Puerto Rico."

I told him that's crazy, why? He thinks because the crime rate is high and both weapons have projectiles that are untraceable.

I don't know how true this is, the guy is a new acquaintance of an in-law but he seemed credible about everything else he spoke about.

The PX on base sales a few little cheap crappy kids and compound bows. You can Bow Hunt goats and pigs on Mona Island. I think they have a shotgun season also from what I read online.

Checked with a Puerto Rican colleague of mine he used to be a police officer there. He lived there all his life till he moved state side. He said all hunting in PR is illegal. However they have tons of iguanas and they are not protected and can be shot and eaten as they are pests. He said he didn't know of any archery ranges but if you hook up with a land owner you are allowed to shoot bows on their property they just need to be cased until you get where you are going. Hope that helps but I'd still double check with the local authorities. Nothing worse than being a U.S. Citizen making prime time for violating the laws of a sovereign country.
