I have this 1961 Polar. It is 64" long and 50@28". All I want to do is share it with other people and let it live a little.

The bow is a "Hot Mess" it has stress cracks all over and the finish is getting rough. She has a slight twist in the upper limb, but she will shoot where you are looking.

If anyone is interested, all I ask is you pick a month, keep it for up to a month.

Sign it, put a note of what you experienced with it, and maybe a picture. Then send it to the next person in line. Thanks, Hugh

It's a great thing you are doing and similiar to "Old Buck," which I was able to enjoy a couple years ago.

I recommend making sure the people who sign up have a history here on this site. A couple years ago, one of our members, and personal friend, was gracious enough to do the same thing with his Black Widow and on two different occasions, I had to literally track two people down in order to get it back. I even paid a personal visit on one of the instances. I'm sure your probably not all that worried about it but, it only takes one person to spoil it for everyone that looks forward to being a part of something unique like this. I'd say 99% of the members on this site are straight shooters but as we've seen in the past and on occasion, there's always someone coming on here looking to benefit from the generosity this site is famous for.

Kudo's to you and I'd be honored to partake in this as well. Any month is good and pm me when you need an adress, etc..

Busta I have to second the 99% of leatherwallers my wife was floored today when my strings arrived from a swap for a knife. She said she would have never expected you could do that on the internet. I had no doubt it would go well, traditional archery and most outdoor forums seem to be straight shooters for the most part. Okay as for the bow making rounds I'm in and if we are going by birthdays mines in December, and that's archery season where I grew up :)

I have a 61 Kodiak Special with some of the same issues that I came up with a fix for...you just cover up the stress lines with stick on Polar Fleece and forget about them

DDave

From: uphuntn
Date: 26-Apr-13

Dave, the idea I had was to strip the old finish off and run some brown stain down the limbs and make it look like wood grain. Then I figured why, she is beautiful in her own right.

Hugh

I would like in! Never did get to spend time with old buck!

From: uphuntn
Date: 26-Apr-13

You have November "buckbow" and I hope you enjoy her. Old buck definitely made a name for himself. I can only hope everyone enjoys "All Cracked Up" as much and she makes a name for herself.

We are now starting to schedule 2014...

From: camodave
Date: 26-Apr-13

One thing you might want to consider, if any of those lines might be open to the limb cores, is filling them with Loctite 420...other than that I am kind of the same mind as you...those old bows came by their character marks honestly and there is no reason they need to be changed

I'll pass. Just had a vintage pearson recurve split in two pieces at the riser shelf. Put a 2" gash on my head and cut my eye. I am going to be ok, but I flinch a little when someone gives me an old bow to shoot! LOL

From: uphuntn
Date: 27-Apr-13

Jim, glad to hear you will be OK. Completely understand the fear of the unknown as far as some old bows are concerned.

I may worry more if this bow hadn't been shot all along and had just came out of a closet after 20 years. This one however is a shooter and does her job well. Take Care and Shoot Straight...

Well folks, I got "All Cracked Up" in the mail today from Bustacrook and even though I'd been at our monthly club shoot all day, I had to string 'er up and fling a few. What a dandy old bow. She shot my 400 spine carbons the best with my 29 1/2" draw length but did quite nicely with some cane arrows I recently built. I'll check in again after playing with her a while.

"All Cracked Up" is doing fine. Her new string stretched out and the brace height was too low. She was really noisy and shooting rough so I got the brace height back up to 7 3/8", added some wool silencers and a second nock point since I shoot three under. Oh yeah, shooting nice now.....and quiet.

She's no beauty contest winner with all the stress cracks, but she can sure fling an arrow with the best of 'em :-)

Yep, I've definitely enjoyed trying out this Polar. Never shot one of these Bears before. With my 29 1/2" DL she seems to like 400 spine carbons and a cane arrow I recently built flies great too. And I don't notice any stacking either. Nice!

This is the first time I've ever seen this thread, and I think this is just awesome! One more thread that shows that Traditional Archery seems to attract (for the most part) amazing and generous people! I'm curious how many different people have had the chance to shoot it so far?

Oh and I would love to have it in March if possible (my Birthday is March 19th), even if it isn't until 2015. I could take it roving/stump shooting out at my family's 80 acres, and maybe even get some squirrels!

Just a heads up on the shipping cost associated with "All Cracked Up". Depending where you need to ship it the cost can run quite high. Thanks Jim "Tarponnut" for bringing this to my attention.

From: ehertz
Date: 04-Mar-14

What does it cost on average to ship a bow. I know it depends on distance etc. but generally speaking what does it run? Thanks, Eric

From: uphuntn Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 04-Mar-14

It has cost me between $15-$25. Distance does affect the amount. From the east side to the west side it could run up to $50+.

From: DEAc23
Date: 04-Mar-14

I've shipped quite a few bows in the past few months, and the average cost for me is about $17 (that is for Priority Mail with insurance). Of course I make my own boxes when I ship a bow, so I always make it as small as it can possibly be while still protecting the bow.

The funny part is that once the package is above 84" of length/girth, then Priority Mail is actually cheaper than Standard Post. For instance, a package that is 65"x6"x4" (that is 85" in length/girth) costs $16.28 for Priority, but it's $38.21 for Standard Post. Oh and that is for a package that weighs 4 pounds and is going from Spokane, WA to Miami, FL (across the country).

From: ehertz

Thanks for the info. This is a cool deal and I hope you all have fun with that bow! Eric

Well I couldn't wait, so I got "All Cracked Up" strung and took today's first shot (from 10yds, inside). I posted the picture in CD's thread, but I thought I would post it here as well...

I can't wait to take it out into the woods!

From: DEAc23

I just realized I hadn't posted in this thread in almost two weeks, so I figured I would come post an update.

First off I am having a ton of fun with "All Cracked Up", and I haven't even had the chance to take it into the woods yet. My main bow before this was a 40# Black Bear, so I was a little worried about the 50# weight. Although after a few shots it was a lot easier than I thought, and now I am pretty consistently accurate with the 50# Polar at 10-20yds (at least more than I was with my Black Bear).

Anyways, here are a couple pics that I took almost a week ago, right after I finished putting together my first ½ dozen arrows. Obviously the first pic is of the arrows in front of "All Cracked Up", and the second pic is one of my first groups @ 10yds.

I will make sure to post some more pics soon, especially next weekend when my brother and I go out roving.

From: DEAc23

Hey everybody, I just got back from dropping "All Cracked Up" off at the Post Office, so it should arrive at rubby's house on the 10th.

I also got some pictures from when I took it out for the last time on Sunday, but I will be starting a new thread to post them in (so it doesn't clutter this one up). I will post the URL to the new thread later tonight or tomorrow once I have time to upload/post them.

Thanks again Hugh!

So I was going through the bow pile and came across a bow sock I hadn't seen in a while. Opened it up and "All Cracked Up" was inside.

This bow traveled around in 13'-14' and accounted for one squirrel and a Doe.

"Tarponnut" = 1 Grey Squirrel "Old Crow" = 1 Doe

Brought some good memories back of good conversations that were had with good people about their time with "All Cracked Up"

I would like to send "All Cracked Up" out again, so if anyone would like to have "All Cracked Up" for a 2 week stretch and then pass her on to the next person just PM me and I can get a list started.

Thanks, Hugh

Hugh, what a great idea...put her on the road again. I am guessing she's a 1960 ; 1961 Polar moved up to 66", "ice" blue fiberglass. I have a 1960 Polar, a "light" 45#, that Shandor Weiss threw into a box with another bow about six months ago and sent my way. Its in good shape and a sweet shooter. If there's interest from folks who are a bit hesitant about 50#, I'd be happy to put this one on the road as well. Mark

Hi Mark, She is a 1961 64" with White glass. Awesome that you are offering up that 1960 Polar for people to shoot. If you wouldn't mind I'd offer to be the first on the list. I really like how the 59'-60' Polar's shoot. Thanks, Hugh

Very cool Hugh. I always enjoyed this type of thread. Does anyone know who was the first to do this type of thread? With the traveling bow. It is a really cool idea who ever came up with it. It sure makes for an enjoyable thread. Thanks Hugh.

Hi Don, not sure who the first one to do this was however I do know George's Old Buck Longbow was before me. Take care, Hugh

Mike Huston started sending around the "Little Delta Bow" almost 20 years ago. 1957 Bear Kodiak Special that Bill Brown (one of the founders of the P&Y Club) killed a bear and caribou with in Alaska in 1958. I was fortunate enough to kill an Oregon blacktail buck with it in 2003 and a hog on Mike's Florida lease in 2006.
