Its 20 degrees outside, and dark as the dickens and i just came in from shooting my old 52 Bear Polar longbow 64" 66 @ 28, 54 Bear Cub 62" 59 @ 28 , and what i believe to be an old Gordon longbow from the early 60's 64" 48 @ 28. Im tellin ya folks, even with all the great NEW bows out there, the tried and true old classics are hard to beat! I love my newer bows, but shooting these classic pieces of history is an absolute joy! If your a fan of the OLD bows, sound off! Let us know what your shootin!

There are many "new" bows I would like to try and hope to in the future. However, it is through "old" bows I have have been able to get into traditional archery. The bows I have been shooting most recently are a Ben Pearson Javelina and a Herters Imperator Hunter.
Sometimes I wonder, if I have this much fun with "old" bows how much fun would a more modern bow be? Currently as I aluded to before I can't comment. But I thank the "old" bows for the fun I have had.

Today I was mostly shooting my early 1950's Streameze fiberglass takedown longbow, and my recently converted to takedown 1952 Bear Kodiak.
Yeah, I love the old bows.
But a 1952 polar? I thought they didn't appear until 1957? According to one website, the decal for the bear bows up to 53 was the running bear.
By the way, I contacted Al Harford jr. and he has the decals for the old bears. I ordered a complete set for my Bear bow.
I regularly shoot my 1950's all fiberglass action longbow as well.

Amen! Had one new bow,and don't want another one. So for shooters I have a 1970 type 1 B handle signed by the man himself, 1964 kodiak mag 50# 62 kodiak mag in the 40's for pounds, a 1957 kodiak 53 pound that is my favorite shooter thus far, and a 1969 SK 60# on the way. A bow that I did own and regret selling was a browning cobra I

All see pretty regular use. The Browning Explorer has been my hunting bow the last three years. This year I plan on using the '68 RW Hunter.

I got a few old Bears including a 58 Kodiak, a 57 or 58 Polar, 57 or 58 Cub, Grizzly, KHunters, KMags, Super Magnum 48 and they all are pretty darned good shooters. The Polar is a good one and so is the 58 Kodiak but of all of em, the SuperK and the KHunter are the best. They shoot right with my modern bows -- just a length or two behind the Schafer and my Parsons Highwood Hunters.
The Highwood Hunters are little known beyond Montana but are jewels. The 62-inch 65-pound Highwood Hunter has been chrono'ed at 205 fps and draws smooth as butter.

Just curious if those that shoot the early 50's bows put string silencers on them, or are they out of place looking on those beautiful old bows.
Can't get myself to do it. The bows seem quiet enough without those little puff balls. Never saw any in the old magazines.

Since I 'rit a book or 2 on them, here's what have stuck with me (so far) out of roughly 200 bows new and old that have passed thru my hands.
'66 K-mag, '60's Super Necedah, '74 Explorer II, early Root Brush Master, 64' Wing P2, '72 Super Diablo, customized Samick 60" R/D longbow, new Cartel/Sage 62", '61 63" Zebrawood Kodiak Special.
I could readily name another 50 vintage bows that are every bit as good as these, and I could also list the big name modern customs that didn't make the cut while that Cartel/Sage for $110 shoots alongside the best of the best.
Bottom line: 50 years or so ago we pretty much figured out what makes a bow perform and there is not a nit of measurable performance difference (when set up equally, mostly the string) between best bows new or old, production or custom.
Honest there isn't.

These are real shooters. The 67 RWH was my first stickbow, and still shoots like the day I bought it! But the Bear will shoot right there w/ my high dollar customs. Amazing!

Can't stay our of this one- 3 semi-recurve Cubs, 48, 55, & 60 lbs. Two Polars, one Alaskan, and one static tip Grizzly. Just last July at ETAR added a "new" old Cub- reflexed, straight limb flatbow- HH style straight grip, wicked little longbow. All my high end custom bows have 1. exploded, 2. delaminated, 3. went badly out of tiller.
All the old Bears- every one of them from 1953 - 1957 (knock on wood-fiberglass!) still going strong. Only my Craig Ekin & Byron Ferguson longbows can match these old bows for durability & toughness. I am THROUGH with expensive custom time bombs.

Note to Stumpkiller....Is Wing still in Business? First serious bow that I bought was a Wing Presentation II. Target bow. I'm pretty sure that it pulls about 34# at 28 inches. Seems like when I ordered it that they goofed on the riser length or the limb length. Didn't matter to me! Loved shooting that rascal! Y'ALL STAY SAFE & Shoot well! LD

Just think.. If we all got together and brought all the great bows just mentioned.. what a blast that would be.. you're all welcome to test drive any I've got.
I've been very fortunate. My neighbor (did Have) 1 of just about every year Kodiak ever made in Michigan.. and allowed me to shoot all of them. Very impressive bows. He's getting close to 80 yrs old and has finally started parting with a few of his rarer bows.
Sure is fun and educational shooting those old bows.

I am in love with ILF. Got a sweet rig now.
While I was home, I saw that Ben Pearson Cougar hangin on the wall...waiting. I took her down, shot a few, and was reminded why I love that bow so much. Not a fast shooter, but certainly consistent.
That old girl goes hand in hand with a 60" Bear Cub I picked up a while back. 32#@ 28. I love that little thing, and a heck of a shooter.

Like George said: Wing is gone, but Bob Lee (and son) are miking an excellent bow as "Bob Lee". I will someday have one made when I decide on which one. ;-)
Wing became Wing/Head, became Wing/AMF, became Wing/AMF/Voit. I have a Wing and a Wing Head only a year apart (I think) and the difference in final sanding and shaping or the tips is obvious. Still shoots well. The early Red Wing Hunters are a different bow: light and whispy with thin limbs and pencil tips. I had an arrow nock fail and my early 60's RWH blew a tip. Very sad day. If I can't find another I have decided to order a new Bob Lee.
Sniff.

hummmmmm.....I believe Bob & Rob are making bows using the Wing name again and have been since 2006.A line of their medium price range long bow models bares the name Wing Archery and may say in fine print Div.of Bob Lee Archery.SK here is some food for though.First may I ask the draw weight on your shortend RWH in the pic ? it could live again ? I've made that repair on several different model bows with the same damage.I repaired Glenn's 44# RWH in 1996 using 2 layers of clear bow tuff as a base on the back of the bow and then added new fiberglass tip overlays(that one still lives today). There is actualy not that much stress on that point and it may hold for another 50 years pending the draw weight is not to heavy ??? what the heck ai'nt no body got a camera anymore......I love looking at vintage bows in the morning bd

I just bought today a '59 Ben Pearson 64" 55# Cougar dual shelf semi-reflex in very nice condition - can't wait to get it !!! I want to shoot it in the local traditional league. Anyone have any experience with this model ??? Maroon glass on belly and caramel glass on the back - no string so I have to twist one up. Harry Drake could sure make an arrow fly -EH???!!!!

Joe, if I could have all the bows from backed out trades, I would be very happy. People change their minds. stinks when it's a business in MI that has the bow advertised on their web site and back out. Then male an offer to trade someone else for it

Not truly vintage, more so venerable. The Hoyt Gold Medalist GM-4TD in factory camo 25" riser with 64" AMO extra short limbs @44#. These early ILF risers are in demand and sell fast. Bought new in 1989 from a past Olympic Silver medalist.

Jay first you will want to clean the holes out by redrilling them the next size up.Get them nice clean and somewhat straight as possible. Then make yourself some wooden plugs from tooth picks old arrow shafts whatever you have handy just something wood that will plug the holes.Make a dry run and cut the plugs so they are just a little below the surface of the fiberglass. You DO NOT want to have to tap the plugs in to tight as they may split the fiberglass.Plugs fitted in just below the surface ? now you can add a drop of super glue around the plugs to glue them in place agian do not over fill the holes........NOTE added sometimes you have to push down on the plug with a sawing needle because it kind of wants to kind of float up sometimes and if the plug pops out and the super gets hard of the hole you gotta start over......The plugs all glued in place and you have a shallow gap on top of all of them to fill ? This can be done several different ways but if you have an art supply store or fiberglass boat repair supplier near you ??? (not wally world don't got what we need)Eather supplier and or the internet to find what we need will work. The art supplier carries a dry pegment powder that can be mixed epoxy which I normaly always only use 24 hour cure time Smooth-On epoxy from 3rivers.You'll now need to purchase the color peg you need at the art internet or boat repairer stores....the boat supply house has a pegment that comes in a squeeze tube and is like tooth paste but colored to match fiberglass.Eather will work for you but you'll do best by test.First mix a little smooth-on and then by adding just a very tiny bit of coloring dry or wet until you get just the color match you need. Then overfill the holes a tiny bit and then let that dry 24 hrs sand your repair flush with your fiberglass surface and polish it up your set bd

I hear ya. I have an old Ben Pearson Colt that's batterd, beat, and full of holes. Ugly as homemade soap, but it shoots as nicely as anything I have ever shot. Just bought a Howatt cavalier, and I can't wait for it to get here.
Looks like others are catching on, though, judging by prices I've seen lately.

Seriously, I've had a bunch of Drakea and never saw laminated wedges like that. Nor a solid rosewood riser. It's a real different Firedrake. The old guy never followed any patterns. I also have another one with tapered wedges inserted at the fadeouts and at the tips.

actuly I've not even gotten to the reasoning behind Harry doing that on his bows ??? odd as it may sound those bows that were built using that type wedges in the limbs and along the riser(I'll post pics later this morning). That was a very time comsuming process building bows like that but there was some reasoning to old Harry's madness bd

well there are 6 total however they do not run the length of the bow from tip to tip.The limb tips have 6 laminations and then about 10 inches down the limb or towards the riser from the tips the laminations are ground away in the middle of the limb.Leaving 6 at the tips and only 4 that border the riser.I am charging the bat-tree for my good camera right now.I got carried away yesterday and striped off all Harry's original finish so's we could get a good look inside. But for now I'll just keep the movie running bd

Doc' I'll throw in my 2 cents. I have seen Pre-Browning Gordon Bows with added laminations like the Drakes.
I have never been clear on Harry's working relationship with the Gordon Bros. and Browning, but it is pretty obvious there was collaboration in bow design going on.

ya know I saw a thread on another sight I can't think of the name of that sight right now.Anywho I see the Drake and I need help ??? thread back up top over there.I was hoping if one of you super cool guy's who or whomever may still access there(I can only read threads I can not respond to anything)you could maybe mention in a PM to that fellow trad archer with the Drake bow or any Drake bow owners they should check out this thread on stickbow.com for Harry bow info. They could post their pics or email the pics to one of us to post(pics are worth a 1,000 words). We may be able to get something going like a massive huge picture book of old bows.It would be neat to have a good number of Drake bow pics posted.I really do love those Drake bows and Harry Drake archery built lots and lots of bows using different woods and different fiberglass colors.Plus there must be a way a guy or gal could download or upload or save the pics and then print them at some point and make him or herself a great little book for ID-ing old bows of all years makes and models most of all all this is free for everyone to enjoy bd

how about info like stringing straightening shooting removing scratches maybe useful little tips a little info about the use and care of vintage archery tackle ???????? ever wonder how to keep finish from getting into the original holes drilled in a bow your going to be spraying ? I replace what ever was originaly in that hole back in the hole. Then I use masking tape to cover that piece that will keep finish out of the routed area used for sight plates plunger button and those super small screw holes. For quiver bushings first remove the quiver bushings and then use a wooden plug the same size as the bushing to plug that hole bd

Love the old photos (or new ones) of the classic recurves. Those 671/2 Bear Super Kodiaks were the most beautiful bows ever made. Toss in the Wing PIIs for good measure. Yea just a wonderful bow,,I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet,he had just got it a couple of days before and didn't have a string made up yet. It feels so balanced (if you will) in your hand when you're holding it, I believe Mr. Bud put lead in the forward part of the grip to act as a stablizer.

Doggone you, Doc, you're just teasing me! I knew there was a reason I held onto those Drakes for all these years! That little 62" one is only 36#, but it just needed to be saved. And, the longer rosewood one with all the tip wedge laminations.....haven't seen that in any other bow.
Yeah, I still have Val's 1959 KS. What a genius that guy was! I had 3 of his Bear replicas and this one, and have never seen a Bear bow that was the equal of any of them. I'm gonna need a lot bigger coffin, because there's way too many bow going WITH me!
Mike, that's a really nice Black Ace. Always wanted one of those.
You know, there's not a single Wilson Bros BW on this thread(but it's so long now an old f__t like me can't remember!) In my opinion, no one ever made a better looking bow than the mid-60s widows. My laptop has all the pics of those and it's in the shop till Monday, but maybe I can post a few of those then.
Get back to work, Doc. I'm hyperventilatin'!!!

yes sir Jack that is a dandy right there and just a super outstanding shooter is yours a 66 inch ? I sold the one I had about 6-8 years ago to a guy named Tom Baldwin wonder what ever happen to that old geezer.I rebuilt an X-99 a couple years ago the model with the big big horns on the front ? I redid the whole bow in black well not the limbs I left them white I did just the wood in black because the thing had 16 holes drilled in the riser for different sights plunger and stabilizer bushings. That one was 66 inch 47#@28 and was one of if not the best shooting bow I ever shot....my first arrow I shot out of that X-99 I shot a robin hood in my front yard with the old beast ya gotta love it when that happens believe me bd

make any repairs that will need to be done on the fiberglass before adding the overlays. In some cases the glue will kind of usz out around the edges of your new overlay but its better to make the repair with some loc tite super bonder first before you put the new tip overlay on bd

because I am making a repair rather then the original manufacture of the bow.I replace each of 2-3 or 4 layers one layer at a time so as to NOT stress the end of the bow.It is much easrier to bend one layer of fiberglass or wood rather then all 3 at the same time. They will bend one at a time much easier to match the contour at the end of the bow. Some bows are built real straight on the ends long bowws and you can glue all 2-3 or 4 layers to those type bow ends at once bd

hey Tom to answer your ?'s about the striped latch screw in your mag handle. Is it the screw hole that mounts the latch to the riser its striped out in the magnesium ? and yes you can shoot them with the latches open or for that matter not even on the riser. My carp bow was an A riser and it never did have latches mounted for maybe 5 years.Fred designed the riser with the latches in mind just incase your string broke at full draw so your limbs would not go flying off into the brush.Remember the early bear latch hook 2 piece long bows that hooked in the middle of the grip type system ? when your string broke shooting those the upper limb could get damaged hitting the ground some 12 yards away from you.......not even to mention that nice buck that just fell dead laughing bd

Snowshoe,
The 59 Kodiak Special has a wood overlay on the belly side of the riser [left] while a 60 the glass comes all the way down [middle] The 1960 Kodiak Special Deluxe is similar to the 59 [right].

Snoeshoe,
Nice looking '59 Special there. I found a similar right hand so let the lefty shown in the picture go to a left handed friend of mine.

Hell, Nowheels - all you're going to see at the beach is half-naked women! Sure, they're exciting.... for a while. But, you can lust after a different bow every week. And, when you don't find it so great any more, you can just hang it on the wall, or sell it, or give it to a buddy! Don't try that with one of them females. They've just got no logic or sense of humor about most things!
Now, Doc's place, that is a worthwhile stop for anyone who loves beautiful bows.
You da man, Doc!

ST my fav black model is the 1969 with a the sweet grip on them.Oh yeah Phil thats a real gemster for sure right there thank you for posting that one.I know some of the boys must be holding out on us.I know there are a couple really sweet Easton take down long bows floating around the group lets see em boys where are they ???????????? yesterday it was fairly nice outside so I just had to get out and shoot about 50 arrows out of my original B riser and 53# factory camo limbs.I have hope of arrowing another black bear in Que'bec with vintage archery tackle this spring so's I was getting ready a little early.I can't hardley wait to get back into the bug infessed Canadian bush this spring along with about 20 of my good traditional archery tackle shooting buddies please note I did not say vintage archery tackle shooting buddies nope that would be only myself and maybe one other hunter that hunts with vintage tackle only.As always I'll be there with my old broken down 43 years old piece of hard wood and fiberglass flinging arrows....you gotta love it ahh bd

going to spray some bows next week now it finaly warmed up a little here in soggy bottom Seattle.I was going to post a few tips that may or may not help you guys wanting to do a restoration on your own bow.I'll try to go from start to finish on applying new finish and a couple little tricks I like to use to get some really nice looking depth to the new finish.I have several bows almost ready to go including the Harry Drake bows I've been working on.Those Harry's shear beauty will knock your eyes out real soon believe me Harry was well ahead of his time and his bows were as beautiful as they shot OUTSTANDING.All that I will be doing is what I like to call washing the window in which you view the bow thru and can enjoy the true beauty of Drake archery's fine bow work none finer bd
