no pix, but picture a cheap blue tarp thrown over some briars or a barb wire fence & you'll get the gist of it. dry? sometimes. comfortable? no...but it beats hunkering under a pine in a driving rain. :^)

These threads kill me - I want to be out of this office and in the woods somewhere so bad that I can hardly stand it. Probably be next year before I have the time and the gear to do more than one public land hunt this year though. Guess I will live vicariously through all of you guys.

I always wanted a tipi.. but those long poles and heavy fabric are just not very practical to put up and move on a regular basis for a few nights stay.. so here was my homemade compromise. All made from canvas and only requires one pole to set up, unless you want the fly up too (makes it look much cooler and makes it water proof) then you need only 2 sapling poles and a crate of stakes.

Some great looking camps, neat thread. Pic is of a typical remote SK black bear camp. In my guiding career have set up camp on 23 different remote virgin lakes, the first guy on them to hunt bears. Fishing is always great and shore lunch never gets old. I always sleep the best in a tent by the water, another perk of my favorite job of the year. Can't hardly wait for June!

Heres a pic of home on my last Hog hunt in Ga. where my Whelen leanto served me well. Heres a pic of the Whelen with candle lanterns burning so I could find my way back to camp in the dark. If you will notice I used a striped Witney 6 point wool blanket as an envelope for my sleeping bag. With the first nights temp at 16 degrees and all of the previous nights still in the teens, I slept like a warm baby in this set up......cant say enough good things about wool. The fire with reflectors didnt hurt none either, although the fire was out by morning, the wool envelope kept me toasty all night.

I was looking through my old photo albums this morning and ran across this picture of a mule deer hunting camp that I enjoyed back in 1970.

My father-in-law, brother-in-law, and a good friend and I were hunting with Oscar Massey southwest of Grand Junction, CO. One thing I vividly remember about this trip was my father-in-law shooting every arrow in his quiver at a mule deer buck. The deer escaped unscathed.

I'm pictured the second person from the left. Our outfitter is on the right, and an Indian guide is kneeling in front.

The wool shirt, patterned after Fred's Grousehaven shirt complete with a silver grouse pin on the collar, the knife and file with stone on my hip, the blanket sided canteen, carried tang, a welcome thirst quencher on the hunt!
