Was curious about them. I like the way they look, but was curious on how well they shoot.

I MAY be considering a Royal longbow or a Takedown Stealth recurve...Austin

tradarcher, the wes wallace bows are very good. here is a pic of a brown stealth model i had, but have since sold. it was above average in speed, and very quiet with a B50 dacron string. if you like the larger size 3 piece take downs, i would recommend one.

Here's a one piece recurve. I also own a take down recurve and 2 take down longbows.

Guess you could say I like his work.

Thanks for posting everybody! Those are some goregous bows

I really like my one-piece recurve that I got new last year (first NEW bow for me since 1980) - it has a pretty big riser, has kind of has a target-bow vibe. Right now this is my go-to bow for the second year in a row. I have a second one on order too... because I like this one so much.

With respect to how they shoot, when I got mine last year I broke my all-time field archery score by about 20 points first time out. Prior to my Mentor, my high score on a Hunter round was 141, my new high score is currently 179 using my Mentor. In reality, my improvement is probably a function of the Mentor's high mass (big riser) and forgiving 64" AMO length - up until I got my mentor, I had been shooting lighter weight (riser mass) hunting bows like Howatt Hunters and super kodiaks and the like. So, in short, the shooting characteristics of this bow are outstanding, at least for me.

The one pictured below (if I can get the picture to come through) has a Bolivian rosewood riser with a shedua accent stripe, and yew limbs.

Tradarcher..I go out and visit Wes several times a year..He's an honest dedicated archer and one of the best bowmakers out there..

Wes truly cares about the sport from hunting to young folks ..

He has a fairly long wait-list for custom bows presently..BUT he does have a few very nicely done 'shop bows' that may be right up your alley and will be priced very well..They are all finely done..he offers nothing that is second rate. Some are bows ordered by folks who for some reason never took delivery( they died)Bennntempted by more than fw of them myself..and IF I didn't already own and shoot so many fine bows, Wes is one I would talk to..He and Kirk Lavender of Bigfoot Bows..and Fred Anderson( if I could get Fred to make a new bow..:) Give Wes a call and inquire about what he has on hand..draw weight, style etc.....Tell him Jim Fetrow says hello..:) Jim

I think they are real comparable to the "Blacktail" by Norm Johnson in looks and design. Have always heard good things about Wes & his bows.

From: Flying Dog

I had a Royal LB and only sold it as I needed to come down in weight. It was one of the best shooting longbows that I had over the years being very accurate and quiet with good speed.

From: Ryman Cat
Date: 24-Jan-13

The mentor I had was every bit as beautiful as my Norm Johnson was and it shot well and if I had to choose between the Johnson and that Mentor I would have choosen the Wallace. Been thinking about having another Wallace built. The Johnson was gorgeous but so was my wallace with waterfall cocobola and bambo spliced limb veneers and bone tips and backing.

I bought a mentor one piece recurve a few years ago and love it. This is the one recurve I will never sale. Ebony riser bocote limbs. Bamboo core smooth as butter.

fox archery, also from oregon, makes a similar model called the high sierra. check out their website. it might be another option for someone considering this style of bow?

the shorter length high sierra's are offered with a 17" slim down riser. i recently handled one and really liked it. it is much smaller then the pics of the wes wallace i posted above.

I have an appointment with Wes this Friday! I've only shot a td Mentor one time and I loved it! Most likely have a td Mentor made in cocobolo and bocote or bloodwood havn't decided yet. Super excited though!

Glad to see all the great reviews.

Wes is a fine gentleman. I have one of his bows bought used. Nice larger riser recurve pacific northwest style. Go with cocobolo, ebony, Bocote and have a high density riser with 64 or 66 total length and get very forgiving balance.

Best wishes.

Wes makes a fantastic bow.I have one of his stealths for the last 25 years and it shoots just nice as when I first got it,you can not go wrong.

From: ron

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ONE JUST TO LOOK AT. AS FAR AS GAINING ACCURACY, I LEARNED A LONG TIME AGO WHEN I WAS REALLY SHOOTING GOOD, THAT I COULD PICK UP ANY BOW OF REASONABLE WEIGHT AND SHOOT IT ACCURATELY. IN THE LARGE PERCENTAGE OF CASES A NEW BOW WILL NOT FIX YOUR SHOOTING PROBLEMS OR SHOOT ANY BETTER THAN WHAT YOU HAVE, BUT I WOULD STILL LIKE TO HAVE ONE BUT MY AGE AND HEALTH IS AGAINST ME

Hey Guys! I'm the one that started this thread nearly 3 years ago, had to change my handle due to computer issues. Anyways, these last 3 years I really jumped into building selfbows and various other primitive equipment and hunting with them. So unfortunately I have not acquired a Wallace bow yet! I will eventually get one though, THANKS FOR REMINDING ME. LOL

They truly are beautiful. Austin

Figured I'd put a picture of mine in here - LH 66" 49#@28 one pc. Macassar ebony with a cocobolo stripe, and kingwood veneers.

Since we're showing pics, here's one - LH, 47-lb, 66 AMO - shedua riser with ebony accent. Really scales at 49 though...

As a statement to the accuracy of a W. Wallace. I do not have mine in my hands as of yet. When I went to his house I shot 3 different bows all of which were Mentor's. One was a 55# 62" if it would have had bamboo core limbs I would have taken it home it was beautiful. The next was his personal 50# hunting bow @ 64" and that to date was the smoothest drawing / shooting bow I ever had the pleasure to shoot. The last was a 46# @ 66". I would love to have any of the three! I have shot for 25 years. The last ten years with stick n string. I've shot long bows and multiple brands of recurves. All three of those bows were extremely accurate! The arrows just went where you looked. Granted, I was only about 17 yards away, but it was truly amazing. If you are serious about archery I highly recommend you shoot a Wallace soon! I've only shot the Mentor.

I've owned a handful. LOL

I don't think you can go wrong with a Wes Wallace bow, and I'll buy another.

My impression of my 3 piece Mentor is it is a SOLID bow. It's fast enough, quiet, and feels like it would hold up to any abuse.

From: powoller
Date: 28-Apr-15

I have a one piece Mentor that recently has taken a back seat to a couple of my other bows. I'm not real sure why since it was my first trad bow and shoots great. The Mentors are smooth drawing and not a bit of hand shock.

I had Wes build me one of his 15 inch B riser Mentors, 58 inch overall length. Cocobolo riser, becote limb veneers, antler overlays. I've been shooting it since June and am very pleased. Beautiful work of art which is highly functional. I mostly hunt whitetails using a climbing stand...this one is a keeper for my purposes.

Wow! That is a stunning bow. If I could only convince wife I need another bow. But I have one on the way. I have one of his LB's. Nothing as pretty as your bow but it shoots great. Wes is a fine person to work with as well. I have had my eyes on a one piece Steath. Not as pretty as your bow but I know it would be a great hunting bow.

From: raptor45

I have owned several of Wes' bows, a Royal, a td Partner and a Mentor. I had them for years and only sold them because the draw weights became too heavy for me.

IMHO Wes' makes the very finest bows you can buy and I plan to order a one-piece in the short riser model....and at a draw weight I can actually manage.

I've dealt with Wes over the years and he never forgets you. Great guy, honest and as reliable as the Sun coming up in the East. Can't say enough good about him.

That bow is a looker, Old Bear! Some day I,'ll get a decent picture of the Irish twins, two Royals, and post it. Sooner or later, know I,m gonna hafta get a stealth version of the Royal. In the meantime, got one his recurves ordered up, 66" takedown Stealth! Should be done mid February..

This thread is 3 years old but maybe we can help the new guys. If I had to describe my Mentor I'd call it a very sturdy bow. The limbs are substantial and perform with good speed and repeatability. I dropped mine out of a tree stand and no harm down despite bouncing off of the ladder. It is easy on the eyes too.

I have friends that own them and I've shot a few. They are great shooters and reflect the craftmenship that Brackenbury taught Wes and Norm Johnson (Blacktail Bows).

Bought my WW Royal Longbow used, here, off of the classifieds about seven years ago. At my draw length of 28", it pulls 61#. Craftsmanship is second to none, and is extremely smooth to pull, and as mentioned, a great shooter. In point of fact, I truly believe that the velocity this bow generates at this poundage makes up for some form errors on my part every now and again. The bow was a good investment, and I'm very happy with it. Though I didn't order the bow directly from Wes, he was more than happy to answer my questions about the bow. Wouldn't hesitate to have him make me a new bow when the time comes.
