Butcher Block Bears have always intrigued me.. Obviously a cost effective way of salvaging hard wood scraps.. In other words they should be the least desirable,, However today because of their rarity,, among the most sought after.. Sweet Bears Dave

A bowyer friend who is beyond reproach told me that Bear had an employee whose sole job was to make butcher block material out of scrap. Now think of the engineering concepts of lamination and i beam in the same bow. It would be an engineers dream. One very effective way to make a very strong riser out of what is really a pretty open grained wood (brazilian rosewood).
And btw take a look at my BH series 1960 Kodiaks thread on tradgang if you want a wealth of additional info on Kodiaks from this era. One thing you will notice is absolute proof that the myth that Bear started over every month with serial numbers is just that, a myth. You will see not one but two 1959 Kodiaks with serial numbers beginning with BH.
Some of the big names in Bear collecting came out to play for that thread.
