Harry Elburg sold out his bow crafting business, I think four or five years ago. He crafted some very special bows, with the Jaguar Mite being my favorites. How many archers own one, or know of someone who owns a Mite? I would love to see pics, especially if someone has a takedown. Harry told me that he crafted quite a few, so they have got to be out there. If you want to talk Elburgs or have pics, let me know. [email protected]

Mine's a Condor, but I think the reason you don't see many of them for sale is that they are excellent bows and the chance of finding another are pretty slim.

What are the specs on your Condor? I have a 68" reverse handle crafted by Harry. Great shooter.

I owned one back in the late 80's, early 90's, and so did a buddy of mine. They were great bows for sure, but not really heads-above others of like design. Harry was a great fellow to sit and talk to...we chatted with him at length at Denton Hill back many moons ago. *^).

This Condor is 68",53#@28". Straight grip, with what appears to be red elm lams.

contact Jose' DeMoya over at the ITBA website. He has several for sale

From: foxbo
Date: 11-Dec-10

Thanks John. I saw the one Jose' had listed, but it was too stout for me. (no offense George :)

His regular longbows may have been on parr with some of the other top shelf bows, but I believe his Mites, (shorties), are the best design I've ever shot.

Harry did a lot of testing to see what his bows would take. I remember him telling me how he'd leave a bow cocked at full draw for a couple of weeks to see if it could take the stress.

Then there's the tale of the shooter up at Denton Hill who walked up to try out one of the 48" mites. Harry said he took four arrows and shot at an elk target up along the hill at close to 80 yards. According to Harry, the guy hit the kill zone with each arrow. He laid the bow back down on the table and soon walked on into the crowd. Another guy who had been watching, instantly snapped up the tiny bow and bought it. The shooter came back a bit later and wanted to know what happened to his bow. :)

Well, there are some in vermont. I have two, a 54 inch Jaguar Mite, 52at 28 and a 64" Jaguar Special, 54at 29.5 [my current go to bow]. Buddy has a coupple mites, left handed, a condor and a 68 inch Elburg made of red elm, one of the early ones, shot iit the other night, not center shot, 58at 28, too much for me.

From: foxbo
Date: 11-Dec-10

Seems the Jaguars are more popular than the Cherokees. I had a Cherokee Mite, a flat bow, which was 50". I sold it and stuck with the Jaguars. I would love to own, and shoot one of those Jaguar Specials. Never shot one, but I bet they're as smooth a bow as ever crafted. elbow, got any pics to post? That'd be cool!

Harry is a very dear friend of mine. I was at his house a few weeks ago and me and another friend are gonna go see him in a couple of weeks. I can't do pictures but I just picked up a 64" condor about a month ago.. I've owned alot of Harry's bows and they were all wonderful!!! SCATTERSHOT, If you ever want to sell that Condor, let me know please! elbow, I have a friend that would love to have that Jaguar special.. His handle is Twigflicker! If you want to get rid of it, let him know..lol

Foxbo, I had my jaguar Special reduced in weight this year from [email protected] to [email protected]. Adam did the work. I am now shooting a 30.5" 2016 from this bow with 145 grain razorheads. Smooth it is, even smoother at the lower weight. I have not hunted it this year as I have been shooting a Kodiak my daughter gave me, but last year I shot a 20 " spread 8 pont in Ohio with it, search my thread and youll see a picture of me with the bow and the 8 pt.

She will never be for sale but if anyone does run across one about 50 or less let me know. BTW, I have a 54" Jaguar Mite that is 52@28, I gave it to my 13 year old stepson a couple years ago, he treasures it but the selfish side of me wants to steal it out of his room!

From: foxbo

Get him another lighter weight bow and inform him that 52# is too much weight for a 13 year old. :)

I also have a 54" Jaguar Mite, flawless. Never have taken that one into the woods.

BTW, Twigflicker isn't interested in Elburgs anymore. I believe he wants all future elburgs for sale sent to foxbo's attention. :) :)

Harry was a one man band, so to speak, so a lot of bows may not be a real "lot" of bows relatively speaking.. Most folks seem to hang on to his as well since they aren't available anymore. Harry is a colorful guy to talk with for sure.

I remember Harry talking to me over the phone concerning the Mongol design bow. He said something about someone sending him some sort of plans on the design from that area and it was an original design. I'd like to see pics of that one.

It looks like Harry is going to have some visitors. I am going to see him one of these days too. Todd and Jonathan let me know when you are going and I'd try to go the same day. We can gang up on him.

Harry once showed me the prototype for the Mongol bow. The only one I've seen besides that one is the one that Teegarden owns.

I think Harry was partial to the Cherokee model over the Jaguar, because they "did not stack as much".

Harry has a brilliant and fertile mind.

God bless,

José

I have two Jags, and the mid handle, one, is that the Falcon? I disagree they aren't exceptional, I think they are way up there above any other bows, in my opinion, but they are still just bows, you can only distance yourself so much. I lost track of what Harry was building before he started on the midget bows.

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 17-Nov-12

Tim,

From my memory... Harry's main bows from an early brochure I have were the Cherokee Flatbow and Cherokee Special (just a shorter Cherokee), Jaguar longbow, Cheetah Recurve 64", Falcon Longbow, and Condor Longbow...

Other models that came later, were a Cougar Recurve 60", Cheetah Recurves in 52" and 58", Jaguar Magnum, Jaguar Express, Jaguar Specials, and then the Jaguar Mites... He also made one he called the Old Timer Longbow... The Cherokee was also developed into a "Mite" series and I remember a Cherokee Magnum as well and then the Mongol...

I've probably missed a model or two Todd, Jose and Ed might remember what I've forgotten...

Gotta admit I'm an Elburg nut... I just love the way they look (simple elegance) and the way they shoot for me...

Jonathan

From: foxbo
Date: 17-Nov-12

I can't think of a single model that you missed, Jonathan. I have one of his old brochures which picture all of his models during the time. It does not include the Mites as they were later on down the road. I believe the shortest one then was a 58" Cherokee Magnum. I have one of those too.

From: T Hunt

Thanks for the invite guys, but It's a tad bit too far for me right now. I'd love to meet Harry though.

I'm thinking that he did keep a few of his bows, right? I can't imagine that he would let all of them go. He told me once that his hunting Mite was a 50"er. I asked him why he didn't shoot a 48"er and he replied that he hadn't gotten around to crafting one for himself.

Where was his shop? Was it near his house? I know he said that he sold all of his equipment, but I don't remember him saying a building was involved too.

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 18-Nov-12

He didn't keep many Ed... I remember him having a 50" Mite at a shoot a couple years back... and I think I remember him having one of his early Condors... and then he a prototype TD that he was working on in the early 90's that was like the "bowbolt" but had finer threads...

His shop was in a building right behind the house... still there as he has various projects going...

The latest... Harry is an artist... No lie... He's doing paintings now...

Jonathan

PS Ed, you have a place to stay if and when you get this way... I'm only about 45 minutes from Harry...

From: foxbo
Date: 18-Nov-12

Gee, thanks for the place to stay if I ever make it out that way Jonathan. I'd be sure to bring all my Elburgs too. :)

Harry's doing paintings now? Of what? Boy, that's a twist.

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 18-Nov-12

Don't think I hadn't noticed the hedge 50"... I was just trying not to sin (covet) on a Sunday...

I'm not sure what he's painting... he was at a big art festival they have a Madison... I'd taken the wife down, but couldn't find him that day...

Jonathan

From: T Hunt
Date: 18-Nov-12

His paintings are of local landscapes and are super nice! I've shot his 50" bow several times and believe it or not, I can draw it past my ear with almost no stacking!! He has a cougar left over also and he said all bows he still has will go to his children.. Ed, You have the same offer here also! It's an Indiana/Kentucky thing buddy!

From: foxbo
Date: 18-Nov-12

Thanks so much Todd. I appreciate the kindness.

That 50" Jaguar Mite is an incredible little bow. I have two 48"ers, a 50"er and a 54"er. I don't believe you can find a better crafted and performing short bow anywhere.

From: Scooter Trash
Date: 18-Nov-12

I have one of those 64" Cheetah's. It's all osage. A very simple design. She is very smooth and very fast.

There is a lot to be said for simplicity.

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

I have to agree with Todd... I've shot a lot of Harry's bows and they are all fast, but this 64" Cheetah is crazy fast...

Jonathan

From: Doc Nock

A friend of mine was given 2 elburgs...a mite was one of them and a jaguar...both were pretty stout.

I shot low-mid 50's then...and this was in the mid 60# range..

I couldn't believe it...

That bow pulled and shot like my mid 50# bows.

Harry was quite ahead of his time...

Wish him well when you visit.

Does anyone have an E mail address for Harry? I have an unmarked Elburg that I would like to find out exact model, or what it may be if not typical model.

From: Crossed Arrows
Date: 21-Jan-14

Harry Elburg invented and manufactured the Grizzly Broadhead in the '80s, if I am not mistaken.

I remember meeting Harry at the Great Lakes Longbow Invitational, in '87, I believe. Great guy with lots of stories. Actually, I most enjoyed listening to him and several other very ezperienced bowhunters.

From: Crossed Arrows
Date: 21-Jan-14

I also had a Harry Elburg bow made for me in the late 80s. It was a very good bow, but I let it go in the early 90s for some stupid reason.

Throw up a pic Shane... I might be able to help identify...

Sport... The bow closest to Harry is his mongol model... 1 of 4 that I know of... From what Harry was telling us weren't a great number of those made... Unique bow...

The furthest away is a 64" jaguar special that has carbon on the belly... Bow was unreal fast...

Maybe Jose, Ed, or Todd will stop in for a look and have a better idea...

That one come from RMS as well? They had one that looked similar that I inquired about...

Twig... The bottom tip is stubby just like my Mite. Here is one of Elburgs heads I believe was called Wolverine The insert was added by my brother.

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 22-Jan-14

Yep that's a Wolverine head...

I wasn't talking shape... the whole bow has an Elburg vibe... it's the way the tips are constructed (layers)...

I have one early model that has just a wood overlay...

I have some other models that are micarta 1 color, black, purplish, etc.

And a couple of other models that are layered with some kind of black and yellow materials...

Harry was always experimenting with something...

I've seen some pretty wild stuff of his... One recurve I have has little almost "pin" nocks top and bottom... yet another have what I would call his normal...

I saw a lefty 58" curve two or three years ago that had normal limbs up till about 6 inches from the tips and they were narrowed by half... wild looking thing...

Seems to me that Harry Elburg is one of those unsung heroes of this great sport, making great bows and great broadheads for reasonable prices.

From: Flinttim
Date: 23-Jan-14

My friend Bob Blair worked for Harry for a while and he told me of testing broadheads by shooting into concrete blocks and steel drums. It would have been neat if Harry had kept a Guest Register for all the visitors who stopped by over the years.

From: foxbo
Date: 23-Jan-14

I have not seen an elburg which looks like the bow in the pic either. What length is it? Looks to be around 56-58". The limbs seem a bit wider than the jaguars. Maybe an early version of the Cherokee mag. Although the riser isn't Harry's regular design at all. He experienced with a lot of different designs, so maybe this is one of those. If you mail the pictures to Harry, he could tell for sure if it was one of his and probably when he crafted it.

I'm still waiting for that takedown Mite. :)

Small world! Found previous owner on facebook

From: Hunt OH

Harry has a cult following here in SE Indiana. His shop is about 30 miles from my place. Years ago, I became friends with Harry's "apprentice" Bob Blair. Bob was very good at all things trad and primitive. He still is big in flintlock muzzleloaders. Anyway, if a bow didn't make weight or if it wasn't 100% perfect, Harry wouldn't send it out. Bob would take them and finish them up. I have came across 3 of the Blair/Elburg bows and this was one of them. I got it a few months ago on a trade with Bob's son. He had no interest in hunting or traditional archery and honestly saw no value in the bow, so I got it for nearly nothing! Bob also did a different leather wrap than Harry did. But if you come across a bow that you know is an Elburg, but without markings, I can guarantee its one that Mr. Blair finished.

From: skullz Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member

I learned to shot trad with 56" two piece mite at 66#! Probably the worst first hour ever! Lol... To learn on anyway as I would do anything to have that bow back! I called it the cricket because it made a slight crick in the riser when I drew it.... Miss that bow a lot!

Thanks for posting the pics Jonathan. That's a very nice and hard to come by bow. Can you tell if it has any lead in the handle section. Harry told me that he often put some lead in that area to give the bow a more stable hold.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 13-Jan-16

Fact is, the reason you don't see so many for sale is because he didn't make that many....relatively speaking. Harry was pretty much a one man operation....he didn't turn out 40,000 bows or more per year. If you want an Elburg, the time to buy one is when you see it for sale. If you check Ebay once a week, you may stumble onto one there every now and then.

From: butcherboy
Date: 13-Jan-16

I see there are two Elburgs on the RMSG site currently....

From: foxbo
Date: 13-Jan-16

So the shorter bow weighs .25 pounds more? That would be 4 ounces. Probably just the added weight of the take down sleeve. But the other bow is four inches longer, so ole Harry may have hid an ounce of lead in the handle. Cool!

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 13-Jan-16

Ed, I need to make another trip over to see Harry... Jose, Todd and I have talked about going over again, but just haven't gotten it done...

That would be a question I need to remember to ask him about... and how one could tell whether or not it has it in it...

From: Bowlim
Date: 14-Jan-16

Does anyone know what his trick was aside from overall excellence? He had some way of handling the cores that sounded a bit like the Perry reflex. I think there is some incomplete reference to it in the bowyer's bible.

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Tim,

I don't know how many guys would know... probably Adam Proctor that Harry tutored and sold his forms to... there were some local guys that Harry helped build bows that might know, but I've never heard anyone talk about it... but I know there is something special about Harry's bows... at least to me...

I have three Elburgs. A Condor 59@28, A Jaguar Mite 53@ 27 and a Old Cedar 58@28. The Old Cedar was one of the first bows that Harry put on the market. HE said he had to stop making it because Cedar was costing to much. He couldn't keep his price down. It's a beautiful bow with cow horn tips.

Well... looky here... my buddy ole Ed is still on the hunt...

I finally obtained a Cherokee Mite this past spring... I had a buddy find it at a shoot in KY and called me as I was doing yard work that day and had skipped the shoot... so I made a quick run to pick it up ;-)

I also picked up an older Cherokee from a fellow in CA that has red cedar lams and hedge tips... it's an early Elburg bow...

I keep my eyes and ears open for any floating around... I haven't seen any online for a good while, ebay, here or other avenues where I've found them...

I did have a local friend that had a few in his collection and picked up a light poundage Jaguar... and a Jaguar Magnum that I'd previously owned and let go...

In other words... I have way too many Elburg's now... LOL

Hope you're well Ed...

Howdy ole Jonathan! I knew you couldn't resist an Elburg thread from years ago. :) I still have the same rack full as before. I could have ended up with a takedown Mite, but the price was too high and I really didn't care for that broom handle grip as it looked too straight and round.

My latest bow is a Dwyer Endeavor at only 43#s. It's a very nice handling little bow and is osage. I have one of those slim Jim quivers attached and it lays across your lap excellently.

Hope to see some new pics of Elburgs and wish everyone a Merry Christmas!!

The Cherokee Mite I picked up is 48# at my draw... really sweet little bow... I'll try and get some pics up while off over the holiday's...

I had a buddy help me build a bow in memory of my dad... that's what I've been hunting with this fall... He built a lot of ML through the years and I used some of his maple in it...

So, I have a ? For all the Elburg owners. Have any of you noticed a big weight difference between markings and true weight? My Twins both Mite TD 48" are way off. One is marked 63#@26" and it comes in double checked even by another person at 53#@26". That's a 10 lb difference. Now my other is marked 61#@27" and comes in at 46#@26" a bit harder to get true difference because the 1" shorter draw but enough to know that is well off too.

I have five Elburgs, I have only checked the weight on three of those. All three are about 3-4# less than marked on the bow.

Now I guess I will have to check the other two. LOL

BTW, my scales are a cheap spring type that are not calibrated, but are very close when I check them with known weights, and other bows.

From: Hunt OH
Date: 26-Jun-19

Doug, I have a spring scale as well and know that it's 8# off to the minus, so I add after I scale. Having someone else get the same as me eliminated my concerns about being off.

Don't post on here much anymore, but Elburgs rule! I own at least twelve Elburgs and the marked poundage is accurate.

From: NormF
Date: 26-Jul-19

Well there is one less Elburg around. I got to full draw on my Cherokee and the bottom limb blew up yesterday. It could happen to any bow but I wonder if 29.5 draw was too much for a 62 in. bow. I always shot over 9 gpp usually 10.

From: butcherboy
Date: 26-Jul-19

Sorry to hear that on your Elburg. The passing of a friend.

From: twigflicker Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 26-Jul-19

Like Ed... I don't post much anymore...

but what I have found in the several that I own... yes I have a problem with Elburgs... some of the older bows... say ones built before 1995 0r 1996 scale a little light... usually like 3 pounds... I think the reason for that is that Harry measured into the grip or even the belly of the bow during that time... rather than the front of the riser... like most most people scale...

One's that I own after 1995-96 are "usually" spot on when you scale them to the front of the riser... I do have one exception to that... a 54" Cherokee Mite...

Well that stinks Norm...

I was going through old post and seen this one and people are still commenting on it, that's so cool! Ed I was gonna send you a message asking if you might have or know of anyone who has an oldtimer? And Jon, who has my old Condor?

Well, Well, Well, been a while since I visited this old thread. I dearly love the Elburg bows. I'm getting older and I figured I'd put the ones I own back in the traditional community. That fast talking Jonathan came to my house and took seven of my Elburgs. I kept one, the 66" Jaguar as it was gifted to me from Bob Ferrell. If any of you wind up with any of those seven bows, consider yourselves lucky. They are truly excellent bows.

Otter Tails got three of them and I hope he loves them as much as I did. That 68" Condor is a great bow at 53#. He also got the 68" Jaguar and a 54" Jaguar Mite, the target model. :)

I'm nearing the twilight years and my wife said she'd yard sale the bunch for ten bucks each. I knew then that I'd best to at least get those bows back into the traditional community .

I appreciate the ride on this forum and God Bless to all....foxbo.

That dang Jonathan!

I'd be sad but I think all your (Foxbo) bows were RH. I have four lefties and one righty. There is something very special about Harry's bows. I like the Jaguar models.

Jonathan (twigflicker) is my hero! He helped me acquire several Elburgs. Yep lefty, they're all righties. Feel sorry for ya....but not really..ha!

And Ed, you betcha I love the bows....thanks for fulfilling my bucket list! And I hope your son is still shooting that 66" Jag.....if not, I'll be patient. :). Talk soon eh...?;)

Ha! Guilty as charged... I combined a trip to see my brother and his wife as they life about an hour and half from Ed... and to buy the bows... was really disappointed as his wife wasn't feeling well and my wife is/was a bit jumpy about this whole Covid thing so we didn't get to stay very long...

We already have another trip planned to swing by and visit my friend again... I truly enjoyed getting to meet my online friend and the honor of bringing some beautiful Elburg's back home to Indiana... and I finally got my filthy paws on that 50" Jaguar Mite that foxbo has dangled in front of me for the last 10-12 years... LOL...

I have a real problem with Elburgs... I had a complete collection of each model that Harry had produced at one time... sold off some here lately and am down to 29 Elburg's at the present...

Told you I had it bad!

Thanks again Ed... Looking forward to seeing you next year... Lord willing!

Hey Jonathan, thanks again bud. It was great meeting you...wished I had more time to visit with you at the shoot.

Here's a pic of the 68" Condor and 68" Jaguar. Tho they were in excellent condition, I knocked off that glossy finish and wrapped them with some Bison leather I skived from scraps.

My son took off with the Mite, said he's gonna get a deer with it...he better hurry, I want it back! Wasn't sure I'd care for such a short bow...big surprise...but not really, it's an Elburg. Awesome Lil bow.

Nontypicall, that's beauty.

Well, with only one Elburg left and that one gifted to my son, I feel homeless. :} I really am happy that the traditional gang will have these Elburgs back in their ranks. I loved meeting Jonathan and his wonderful wife, although it was short due to our health issues. We both had a hard time with pneumonia. I'm still coughing up crap and can't hunt. Others have it worse I'm sure. Thank the Lord for what we have. I am happy for Jonathan and Otter tails with their new bows. Have fun guys.
