Good bow, yea or na?

I have one, 60x pounds, a beast to draw but the arrows can't get away fast enough!

From: Newkirk Jerry

Me too! Marked 61#'s, I haven't checked it. If I ever spend some time getting it quieted down I would shoot it more. It seems to be a very fast shooting bow and I shoot it pretty darn good. Buries an arrow with authority. My only complaint is the noise, but I haven't spent much time with recurves so I'm biased. Certainly not looking to get rid of it if that helps.

I had a 62" bow that was among the fastest I've ever shot. All black and a rocket.

I also have a 54" that was adequate, but not s superb performer. It was above average, but nothing like the 62"

The old time Wing Thunderbird was one the most solid in the hand shooting recurves that I had the pleasure to shoot and I have one in #49 Pound, like new; that toxinite handle (bowling ball material-compressed linen) made for a dead solid, no recoil shooting machine.

There is an almost Cult Following of the Wing Thunderbirds because they were such solid shooters.

They had to compete on the market with the Bear Super Kodiak back in the day and you don't have to ask which bow controled most of the market; it wasn't the Thunderbird.

Get the Bow Doc or Drop Tine to redo one of these and you won't want to take it to the woods.

I have 3 of them. Good bows, very smooth to draw and fast.

Thanks Gents.

I killed my first buck with one in 1972...50#, 52", Wing Thunderbird. That thing was an incredible shooter.

Thanks George, I recall you metioning the Thunderbird before.

Is toxinite the same as micarta? I took my first whitetail with a 62"/57# Thunderbird around 1966.

I had one of mine refinished and it is beautiful.

Buzz, Let us know how you like it.

Purchased a 62", 45@28 in 1970. Great shooting bow. Good looking and smooth as silk. Unfortunately it broke in 1977 while I was stringing it. Scared the devil out of me. Never could figure out what happened. I just threw it away and moved on.

That's a nice one Buzz, and crooked sided too 8^). You will love that bow.

From: James Wrenn
Date: 08-Mar-10

A buddy had one.It was a very nice shooter but not what I would consider a fast bow at all.Of course a good string would have helped it a lot.

From: Ronin

I can't speak for the micarta Wing Thunderbird, but I had a 46# 62" AMF Wing Thunderbird and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I couldn't get an arrow to fly straight out of the bow and it stacked really bad at my 30" draw. This one was not made out of the micarta, but some sort of green actionwood. From what I was told the micarta bow and this bow shoot like night and day in difference. I do have a 45# 64" Wing Gull that is fun to shoot.

Thanks Gents. Now the wait for it to cross the line.

You need yo let that bow set for about two weeks and acclimate to your climate before stringing it.

I always let a bow set for days with a longer string than is called for before I put the right lenght string on it then I let it sit for a few more days before drawing it.

You kind of want to baby these old bows and not cause them to blow up after they've survived for all of these years.

I just picked up a 52" 47# Wing Archery Thunderbird ss#T7-1446.

I feel like I got it for a steal but it can use a bit of refurbishing. I will be doing this myself so I can use any advice about that anyone wants to share. I wasn't sure if someone had redone the bow prior to me - thought they may have painted over the wood in the riser and added glued on tip reinforcements. Glad to know about the micarta riser and see the tips just like mine.

Congratulations. If you do a search on refinishing here you'll find lots of discussions.

Pretty bow. I like the slim grip. I think it would fit my hand just right.

As it stands, I will shoot my Thunderbird at the indoor on Thursday night.

Nice old bow.

Micarta tend to develop checks as it ages...I encountered it in both the Thunderbirds and Chaparrals I owned. I scraped off the old finish in the checked area and refinished with Tru-Oil. Here's what the riser on the Chaparral looked like before...this is common.

Your bow is a 1967-first year they were built.

Here are a couple of mine...a 1967 and a 1968...they are one of the best recurve designs ever built. Also just picked up a 52" 1967 from George.

I just got my first T- Bird, 45# and 52". #T-7 1818. Mine looks like the photo from Pdiddly, and I hope I do it justice when I refinish it. Gotta make a string and shoot it this weekend. Lance.
