It is great and I feel like I have a complete store attached to my back when I have it afield.

I made this Howard Hill style quiver a couple of weeks ago. It is from medium weight latigo leather. Oval bottom of 9 oz. saddle or carving leather. I looked for a side of leather with lots of range marks, brands and scarss for character. The finished quiver was then lightly burnished with waxes and rotten stone for a "20 seasons" look. My first post on the LW, I hope my pic posts ok.

Nice to see that someone else still has, and enjoys the Moose River quivers. They are beautiful work and the man himself was very gentle, unassuming and a pleasure to work with. He went out of business because he just couldn't make it pay despite reasonable prices and first class work. I have 2 of his in all leather (no suede) and they are show pieces. Will try for pictures but have never done it.

This may seem like a dumb question so please bear with me. I've always used bow quivers that attach to the bow. With that said, how do you keep arrows in a back quiver from banging against each other and making noise when you're walking or stalking game? Are there partitions in the back quiver so the arrows don't touch one another? I've looked at all the photos on this thread, but unless I've missed it, I haven't seen any where the inside of the back quiver is shown with arrows in it.

Night Wing - an old but still a very good question.
This photo shows how my backquiver has been adjusted to mold to my back, keeping the arrows in place.

Here's another view. I can actually run with my backquiver on and the arrows stay in place because I've invested the time to adjust it just right.

Whengoing through the thick stuff, I can very simply slide the quiver down and under my arm to get the arrows out of the way, then slide it back up when I'm out of the thicket.
Of course, you can't do that if you add one of those extra straps to the backquiver.

Night Wing - to answer the other part of your question - about partitions in a backquiver - my first photo above shows that a bit. I have a leather thong through the top of the quiver that serves two purposes. It maintains the oval shape of the top opening and it provides a seperation for different kinds of arrows. What I usually carry while bowhiking are several rubber blunts in one compartment for shooting thought sagebrush or rabbitbrush (stumps are too damned hard out here in the Rockies) and several broadheads in case I meet up with a mountain lion or a wild dog. I also keep a couple of field point arrows in the same section with the broadheads so that I can shoot at my straw bales in the yard when I go out and when I return. Since they are shorter than the broadheads, I can easily feel them without looking.
Most archers don't like the old HH style backquiver, but after breaking it in, adjusting it properly and shooting from it over many miles, I swear by it. There is simply no faster method of speedloading the bow than from a backquiver - and I've tried them all.

Here's a picture of some of my quivers along with my bows. Two quivers are Jack Bowers and the other one is a Howard Hill stitch shoulder model that's about 40 years old. A lot of arrows have been put in and taken out of this quiver in that period of time that's for sure. Alaska Jim

Crossed Arrows,
Thanks for the great photos. Since my hunting arrows are 31" long, I think I might try the 22" Howard Hill backquiver. I'm still a little fuzzy on the thong at the top of the quiver. Did you make it and add it to your HH quiver as a modification?

NW - The thong, or seperator lace, is just a piece of rawhide or leather about like a bootlace that is run through and adjusted to the appropriate length to keep the opening at the top from forming a circle from the weight of the arrows and leather instead of the desired oval shape. Most HH style backquivers will come with one or you can add one very easily.
You can see a seperator lace coming through in Alaska Jim's HH backquiver above (the quiver on the right) and you can see how the arrows in my backquiver are seperated by a lace in my kneeling photo above. Nothing fancy, just functional.
I prefer my seperator about 2/3 from the shoulder end of the quiver top. That way I have the most maneuver room at that end where I will carry my broadheads and they won't tend to hang up on the lace when I speedload.
From studying Howard Hill's style and John Schulz's training materials, I've learned to grab the nock of an appropriate arrow without looking and while picking a spot on the target and getting into position, I can speedload the bow and take a good shot in 4 seconds. My standard for practice is 2 good shots in 8 seconds. No other way of carrying arrows will let me do this.
Most people give up on the HH style backquiver long before they get it right and really learn how to use it. That's okay. They are welcome to send those old Howard Hill or John Schulz or American Leather backquivers to me. I'll continue to struggle with them. [:-)

Crossed Arrows, The fence in question is 8 foot tall and encircles 5 acres. This is on my son's property. It was intended to keep out wandering moose and bears and does a pretty good job of doing it but last year two brown bears just dug a hole under the fence and came in any way. Alaska Jim

Alaska Jim - what a neighborhood! Of course, once you get brown bears inside the fence, it means you are all inside a cage together!
Night Wing - while bowhiking this morning, I took this photo to show the seperation of arrows in my quiver. On the left side (remember, I'm a lefty) you see barred feather broadhead arrows that are longer than the whitefeathered field points - easy to pick the right one by feel and quick to speedload. On the right are the rubber blunts - again, easy to pick from location over my shoulder.

It's completely carved out of wood, it's 3 pieces glued together. Ed Burgess of Cherokee Slim in Indiana made it. I saw them at the Trad Expo this spring and knew I had to have one. Ordered it unfinished, got it, and doctored it up. I wish he had a website to share, he makes some incredible quivers. Had several that the center piece was made out of shed antlers, for decoration of course, don't think they would be comfortable to wear.

Here's my latest after 4 months of work. This quiver is being donated to our State Shoot in 2 weeks. It has over 40 hours worth of work in it. Had a local flint knapper donate the obsidian knife to go with it and working on a set of arrows to go in it. So if you're in the neighborhood of Jackson Ohio on the 30th and 31st, come to the OSTA State Shoot and take a chance on winning it.

Just a simple quiver I use for hunting. Works well for me. I hunt from the ground and do some stalking at times, This quiver allows me to crawl through the brush if need be and keeps the fletching and arrows tucked close so as not to hit branches and brush that may give my location away. Also works well as a back quiver. I also use a single arrow quiver on my recurve for quick access.

Bowsin that is a really nice homemade bow quiver there.
I posted this one recently but I'll put it up here again. This was a work in process for a year or so. Started out as a back quiver but I decided for my hunting conditions I really needed a side quiver to keep fletching from getting trashed every outing. I really like using it. Would like to get a fletch cover that isn't fleece cuz that gets snagged on thorns when I get lost and have to bushwack:). A pocket for my tab and a string would be cool editions to it and a small knife sheath too.

Just to keep the thread going. everytime I look at it I see a neat design I didn't notice before. Here is a belt quiver I made based on a style I have documented back to Elizabethan times and up through the 1830s or so. It Arrows go through the loop and into the cup which sits at an angle on your side secured to your belt. I find it is the most comfortable and handy way to carry arrows for a 3d shoot. Never hangs in the brush and supports a multitude of drawing methods, including over the shoulder if you so desire.
