I am looking to purchase a longbow that with a takedown system in two pieces or folding style. I want to know what is dependable, ie: if the hinge or locking system is wearing out. Also it needs to be a smooth shooter. I would like to have one for travelling on airlines if I ever go on a hunt a long way from home. Any info or experiences will be welcome.

Centaur!!!! They are as good as you can get, IMHO!!!

I have a 2pc Toelke Whip on order. Dan uses a bow bolt system on this model.

I have done quite a bit of air travel with three piece T/D bows but I was looking for something better suited for backpack and horseback hunting. That is where an easy to assemble two piece really shines in my opinion.

What do you feel is the adantge over a three piece td?

From: Wiley Coyote

I just like the look and convenience. To me a 3 piece longbow looks like takedown recurve. I already have a TD recurve. Just my preference.

Good answer I have just never seen a two piece that I liked the grip on. I think that they look better too.

Allen Boice of Liberty longbows uses a two-piece hinge that works well, assembles/comes apart in just a few seconds and requires no tools. Slide a Shurgrip (rubber sleeve) over it and you'd hardly know it wasn't a one-piece.

I have a Great Northern with a hinge I think they call it the Jacknife. It seems to work well. I also have a two piece leon Stewart longbow that if you were to see it together you would never guess it were a two piece. It uses the old sleeve method, and I see nothing wrong with it.Hope this helps. Billy

I have a Great Northern Jacknife hinge system. It is sweet and realy easier that unbolting a three piece. I also have a Pronghorn 3 pc. and love the bow and the grip. Just not as easy as the hinge but after all, the bow is really put together in moments and then you hunt with the weapon for the entire trip. I'd buy the bow that shoots best for you and the takedown is secondary.

Might check out Shrews also and Saxons.

Both of my Wes Wallace bows are takedows. They are going to Africa with me in June.

Thunderhorn makes a two piece with a great grip and it is very smooth on the draw.

My personal favorite hunting longbow is my Great Northern Critter Gitter w/ the Jacknife folding hinge. Mine has been used hard for over a decade and is tough as nails. It is one helluva great bow when dialed in.

I have 3 two piece bows made by Bobby Lofton, they are all sweet shooting bows. Ego aside, I am afraid I have to give up the heaviest one. It needs a good home. What weight are you interested in?

centaur, easily.

so far my wes wallace w/ the sleeve is convenient and very strong, I think idiot and "wear proof". The bow shoots great too, I had purchased several used ones and settled on the wes wallace, sold the rest.

Flatbow,

I want something in the 62-64inch 55lbs at 27 inches. I am not familar with Lofton longbows. I have a one piece Shrew already and would like to get a different longbow. More along the traditional longbow look instead of a hybrid. But don't get me wrong my SuperShrew will probably always be my numero uno bow!!!! Thanks everyone for your input.

Great Northern Jacknife system on a Critter getter or a bushbow. Great bows, very traditional looks and the small hinge protruding on the front of the grip helps you get that perfect hand placement everytime....DD

Wiley Coyote,

Bobby Lofton was a bowyer from Mississippi. Type in 'Lofton Classic' on a browser and you will get a big trad shoot in the south that is named after him. He is retired, not sure if he is still alive, but made great bows. This bow would be more than what you want. It pulls 67# @ 26"... Last year I sent it to a 'waller'to try. He has a 29" draw and it was a little more than he could comfortably shoot.

I am gathering pieces to build a 2 piece hybrid longbow. The bow will approx 70 to 75 lb at 32 inch draw. Looking at the different takedown systems out there , I am leaning toward the hinge system! Any thoughts please?

Bjjofco, I don't have any fancy names for the system I chose to adopt...as have many others and their names are pretty fancy sometimes :)

What I will tell you is that if you take your time, it is rather easy and inexpensive compared to other TD options and if done right as tough or tougher than the bow itself.

Since I reinforce all my TD risers, I can use nearly any "decent" bow wood without concern.

If you are looking to add mass weight to the bow, unfortunately this won't add as much as often is reported. Much better to use wood species or bow quiver to add the extra mass.

If you do decide to use the carbon/fiberglass sleeve system, you will forever have to disassemble your bow to prove to people that "Yes, it is a TD".

Check out my website for free you tube videos on installing a sleeve TD system and feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks, bigjim

I wanted to add...I didn't design, invent the TD system I use, but decided to use it because I think it is superior to the other systems out there or I would have chosen another ...or to use others for different reasons. I also choose to build all of my personal bows as TD too. I have bows at 100lbs in the field with this system. I have never had a failure due to the TD system itself. That's not to say the others don't work.

Thank you Jim . I hunt the mountains in Colorado and want it to be an easy take down I want the option of stuffing it in my pack ,it can be quite rugged needing both hands to clmb.I do like your setup I watched your you tube video! The fact that you shoot heavy bows and it works. I shoot a 95 lb bighorn recurve now. Just am worried about assembly in field ,looks easy is it? Bjjofco

From: Chemsolder1

Jim's system is as easy as it gets far disassembly and reassembly. Grab the upper and lower and pull apart. I made two after watching his videos a lot. Truly believe after doing it, that it is just as strong as the riser would be as a one piece. Site window is still the weakest point.

Big Jim , Do you sell everything I need to build that sleeve to my bow and what size of riser block do you think should be my starting size?

From: BigJim Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I do sell it all including the g10 woven fiberglass reinforcement. Riser size will be completely dependent on bow design. My buffalo riser block is around 18" × 1.5"×2 before shaping. My thunder child is only 13" × 1.5"×2. You can use the carbon/fiberglass sleeve system on most any bow....even a one piece recurve....hmm, that might just have to happen :) Good luck, bigjim
