About a year ago, I scored this 1958 BP #964, later known as a Cougar, on Craigslist. Asking $100, he settled for $75. Marked 55#. It weighed out at #72 at 28” on the bow scale at my club. It is a 64” semi-recurve, a lot like a 50’s Bear Polar. It was not made with any tip overlays, If you look closely at the 55#, you can see the first 5 probably started out as a 7, and was changed to a 5. Anyway, after shooting it for 6 months. I noticed the limb tips were showing stress lines on the belly side of the tips. Not wanting to let the tips get ripped, I got my brother Chuck, to put some phenolic overlays on the tips, thereby saving the bow. Thanks Chuck!

Those were good old bows that shot well, and still do.

Nice bow Mike. And worth saving. Your brother did a real nice job on those tips. Good luck with it.

They are extra heavy duty given the application. Usually I thin and taper more gradually.

Even I can tell difference between 55# and 72# when I draw the bow. Nice find, treat it well.

When I bought it, it didn’t have a string to test it. I thought I was buying a 55# bow. I shoot 60-70# so it’s ok.

I shoot 63-71# myself.

Hey Michael, what is your favorite 63-71# to shoot. Myself I like the 50’s Bears the most. I also have a 50’s dual shelf Bear Kodiak recurve that’s 74# it’s my heaviest bow. It’s easily the fastest bow I shoot. I just don’t shoot it as much as the others.
