I'm helping out at a charity have a go session. Is there anything better that flour or talc to go "poof" when balloons are hit with arrows.

I wanted to use 1/3 Acetylene, 1/3 coal gas and 1/3 pure oxygen and a lit candle, but apparently health and safety said NO!

Pop line chalk works great.

That mix would be a BOOM! My only experience is what happens when a garbage bag is filled with acetylene. Sounded like a bomb and shook dirt off all the beams of a 90ft high steel mill building.

Would this work?

Tannerite is a brand of binary explosive targets used for firearms practice and sold in kit form.[1][2] The targets comprise a combination of oxidizers and a fuel, primarily aluminium powder, that is supplied as two separate components that are mixed by the user. The combination is relatively stable when subjected to forces less severe than a high-velocity bullet impact. A hammer blow, the product being dropped, or impact from a low-velocity bullet or shotgun blast will not initiate a reaction. It is also designed to be non-flammable[3] (the reaction cannot be triggered by a burning fuse or electricity), although its explosion can ignite flammable material.

I've been told no booms or bangs are allowed just something that gives off a poof of dust

Thanks Rick ... doing a quick search ... line chalk comes in different colours which will be cool for the kids .... balloons on the outside poof white .. balloons in the middle poof blue ... balloons in the centre poof red.

Phil, check out this stuff. Ten pounds will make a lot of balloon puffs!

Do NOT use explosive targets. My friend and I tried that once in my back yard. The targets were about 2 inches square, and a half inch thick. Stuck one on a thin board and leaned it up against my bag target. I shot and missed, Stan shot and missed, then he shot and hit it.

The explosion was amazing, blew a hole in the thin board, in my bag target, and one of his X7 aluminum arrows was dangling by a strip of aluminum, blown in half.

We did not do that again.

Phil, the line chalk is what I use in my bottle bombs, and it poofs real good. I do have a fairly large explosion though.

I dunno if the recent lawsuits against Talc matters to you- the safest choice is Corn starch

I like the idea of a lightly pressurized plastic bottle, but those can be quite a bit louder than it sounds like would be permitted….

I recall that Rick mangled an arrow on a higher-pressure bottle….

Probably could get louder pops if you use smaller balloons and stress them a bit.

Next thing you know, somebody will say that you have to be careful about the dangers of airborne particulate…. Chalk & talc are bad for your lungs, flour will explode…. Wryly laughing my arse off…..

Maybe confetti would do? Run some metallic giftwrap through a shredder?

I have to admit I do like the idea of pressureized soda bottles maybe throw in a few Mentos for some added fizzazz

Corax, all it did was wrinkle the fletching some.

Was a 3 liter soda bottle with 95 psi in it.

Had maybe a half cup of line chalk in it, and made a real purdy blue cloud.

I have a video (somewhere) of a compressed bottle inside a jack-o-lantern. Blew that pumpkin into many pieces.

I need to do another sometime soon. :-)

What about the plastic bottles inflated with air pressure, they make a good pop like a 22 rifle shot.

The two links I posted above are exactly that.

I make my own caps. I just use the cap that comes with the bottle, drill a hole in the center of it, and insert a rubber valve stem. Works like a charm.

Well ... The line chalk worked an absolute treat ( thanks Rick) in the fingers of highly inflated surgical groves. The kids were brilliant ... the adults were a bit of a pain in the bum but all in all a jolly good day was had by all.

Thanks for the input

Sorry Rick no photos Im afraid .. I was too busy collecting arrows and filling latex gloves. Your chalk line suggestion worked beautifully ... the sectret is lots of pressure and just a sprinkle of powder ... POOF

Happy it worked for you Phil.

Most of all, I'm happy the kiddos had a good time.
