Who all here have used tennis wrap grip on your bow handle grips instead of a single piece of leather? Especially interested in those who have used it of recurve grips. Pros and cons welcome.

I used it on a metal handle Hoyt Buffalo. It worked great.

Lizard skin

I want to put it on a metal handle, too. Specifically would like to also know it it helps deter the cold associated with hunting?

Rooty is that a specific type of tennis grip?

Kelly, I purchased several longbows, mostly ASLs with straight grips, from Bob Abeln when I had to drop down in weight fro an injury. They all came with Lizard Skin wraps, which is is a golf club wrap I believe. Some I took off and then put back on as I grew to like them. It does bulk up grip a bit and some are thicker than others. He, and I, used vet wrap over the handle, including leather grips, than apply the lizard skin over the top. Doesn’t hurt the leather with the vet wrap on it if you decide to take them off.

There are several brands used for golf and tennis handle grips besides lizard skins. It does bulk the handle up with the thickest wrap, which I like. And I’ve never noticed it being cold in the winter, but then I always shoot with a leather or wool glove on. I would think it would all be good with a metal handle and cold weather.

I had it on a medium grip longbow like the old Morrison takedowns. And it worked fine, but I did take it off and shoot that particular longbow without one. You can send Bob a pm from this site if you don’t know him. He goes by ruintfletch and I am certain he could give you more/better information than I have. Good luck.

I have leather tennis grip wrap on my HH Big Five. I like a suede grip better.

So on a recurve grip does one start to wrap from bottom-heel to shelf or from shelf downward?

Pictures of these wraps from recurve handles would be appreciated?

My metal handle has No existing grip of any other king, just the metal and some type of powder coat.

I wrapped a Big River Kodiak clone recurve with some to add a bit more diameter. Still have it on after 28 years.

I have put the leather tennis racket grip on several recurves, and currently have it on my Widow PSA. I really like it. Those rubber slide on grips are pretty handy too. I'm a sweaty dude, so I put a grip of some kind on all my bows.

What thickness of Lizard skins do you guys use?

Wyo_John - I like the skinny grip on that Widow, did you order it that way?

From: Wyo_John

Thanks, I like it a lot better than their standard grip too. That grip shape is one they provide called the "Cooling Grip".

Zbone, the last I got was Champkey bat grip and was 1.75 mm thick. It is rubberized and has just a bit of compression to it, which I like on the longbows. I don’t think I could find any Lizard Skin at the time, but am plenty satisfied with this and it’s on several bows now, including one that has some kick to it, but it tamed the handshock in my arthritic bow hand on a bow I would not have kept, except it is an excellent shooter otherwise.

I have Head prestige pro tennis racket grip tape on a couple bows and a couple of musky fishing rods also. My hands get sweaty and slippery in the humid summer weather and this grip tape works very well , is easy to apply , remove , adjust etc. It comes in a pack of three for under $12. It left no residue or marks on a wood riser after removed . The thing about a leather grip I dont care for is leather will soak up perspiration , or water like a sponge . Most waterproofing leather conditioners are somewhat greasy and have an odor .

There's base grip and overgrip. Two quite different things. Base grip is the thicker beveled leather(or mostly synthetic now).

I traded for an ASL bow a few years back that had it. I thought it felt nice but for that particular bow was just too thick. I can see in the right application would probably be fantastic.

I use tennis handle wraps on my ASL longbows .

Here are three bows out of the six in rack with Lizard or bat rubber wrap on them. It is the thicker style.

I get the wrap like they use in the doctors office after they draw blood. Only I buy it from Amazon. It longer than stuff for people and half of drug store price. It ain’t forever but lasts me long enough to be worth it.

Mr. Mosher, does that stuff mess up the finish on the bow? Have you guys tried using an old bike inner tube? I imagine that's tricky to install. I had a longbow with that and it even had a little piece of wood under there to act as a thumb locator. I like that a lot.

I had that tennis wrap on a longbow grip for yrs like it & no problems with it.

Guys -

Those types of grips have been used on bows as far back as I can remember. Best way to increase bow hand torque...

ive used just plain wilson comfort overgrip for years. its not too thick so you still can feel your grip lifelines etc. but also its a great insulator for metal risers to the point of you wont even notice its metal on cold days. plus its cheap and too overly grippy enough to cause torque. sold everywhere

My Covert Hunter has a rather slippery grip surface if my hands get a bit sweaty. I use a wrap of hockey stick tape. Only downside is that for the first few uses, you do get a bit of the black adhesive on your hand.

I have tennis wrap on my Northwind Curve, which is a 50s style recurve and like it a lot. The Lizard Skins mentioned above for baseball bats would work well too. I put them on my son's bats all the time. With the Lizard Skins, they do make different thicknesses as well, so some not as bulky as others.

Same as Westrayer hockey tape works great

Many years ago I used bicycle inner tube, but that was on longbows with locator grips.

I have the Bowmar grip wrap on a couple of bows and I like it. I think it’s basically the same thing as the lizard grip

Kelly,

I’ve been using tennis wrap on “some” of my bows for some time. I have learned that over time, the wrap will stretch and move some. So… I’ve been adding a few fine beads of wood or Elmer’s school- type glue before doing the final wrap. So far; so good.

I wrap it from the top down

Thank you very much Jim!

Appreciate the pictures too.

I've used Italian bicycle handlebar wraps, made of leather, on several bows. Get it on Amazon. Works great to increase the size of the grip for better torque control without having to grasp the bow more firmly. And no slipping. The self adhesive strip on the back is in the middle. The edges are rather thin. The thickness of the grip can be adjusted by how much overlap, or how little, you use. I put leather conditioner on when done, makes the leather look darker and IMO better. I like to wrap from the top down. That way the upper edge of each layer provides a little extra grip.
